"Quite the disappointment"

We had a large number of family and friends going to the Allegro. Our first group arrived on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, much to their surprise they had been bumped and were now told they had to go to the Occidental. The second group arrived on the 9th with the same outcome. The Occidental is apx. a 12 minute taxi ride, not on the beach(don't believe it when management tells you that you're on the beach). I was devastated, my husband and I were so looking forward to the beautiful beach and now we had to take a cab to get to it, that was so far out of the realm of our plans. I felt totally cheated out of our dream vacation. The grounds of the Occidental were very beautiful but honestly other than [...](the sports bar and sometimes disco bartender) the place was a huge disappointment. The food was terrible, the booze was the cheap [*] and the service was comical, by the 6th night when the waiter dropped a butter knife on my friend Kathy's head and didn't even say anything all one can do is laugh and make the best of it. I wish I could get some of my money back but I have no idea how complicated that would be and with the holidays upon us I don't really have the time to be sending hordes of e-mails and spending too much time on the phone.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

The best meal we had was when we had to take a taxi to downtown Playa(by the way we could have walked had we been in the Allegro, an additional cost for us) was from a street vendor right around the corner from the big bus stop area. I think [...] got sick of me coming back and asking for just one more chicken taco por favor!!! 10 pesos, muy bueno.

TOTAL SCAM

Travelers, beware of this bait and switch scam. When we arrived at Allegro Playacar we were told they had overbooked and our reservation would be honored at Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret. I told them we came for the beach and shopping in the area and that would not do. [...], the manager assured me that the beach was beautiful in Xcaret and if we were not happy we could check into the Allegro the following day. She showed me photos of the hotel on the internet, and the picture showed a beautiful beach, so we went. BIG MISTAKE. There is NO BEACH, just rocks and a small manmade "lagoon" that is filled with water from the underground river, not even salt water. The hotel is in the jungle! We were not happy being lied to about the situation and irate when we couldn't get into the Allegro. It was a total waste of a week, we go for the therapeutic effects of the salt water. Don't think this is an isolated incident, folks. They overbooked the Allegro by 50 to 100 rooms per night the entire week we were there, December 1-8, 2010. I think they did it to fill up the Grand Flamenco. In the event this happens to you, we talked to people who got tickets to the park, day passes to the Allegro, cab fare, etc. So, demand lots of perks. I was told that they were even putting people up at Viva Wyndham Maya in Playacar. They would do nothing for us and we are currently pursuing it through our travel agent. Now, the Grand Flameco Xcaret is a nicer hotel than the Allegro, also three times the size. So, if you have kids and want to go to the Xcaret Park right next door and hang out at the pools, you might be happy here. There is nothing else in this area, not even one other hotel. Otherwise, I suggest you don't book the Allegro.I have been traveling the the Riviera Maya twice a year for over 25 years and this is the worst experience I have ever had.

Cute little villa with prime location!

Had a great experience at the Allegro Playacar. Have to admit that I was a little skeptical after reading all the negative reviews on this hotel, but was pleasantly surprise otherwise. I did pay for the beach/pool front room upgrade and would highly recommend doing so. We were given a villa right in front of the beach, right next to the pool/snack/bar area and took full advatage of it. The room was small, but good enough for a couple. The dinning options were pretty good and would highly recommend taking advatage of the two restaurants that require prior reservations. The excursions offered at the hotel are a bit pricy and can be purchased/negotiated better in the downtown area (5th Ave.) which is only 5 min/$5 cab ride away. My only complaint about the room is that there was no clocks. It's important to know the time when you plan excursions during your stay. Other than that I though this was a great place to stay for the price!

Buy all your activities/excursions outside of the hotel and downtown area (5th Ave.) for a much better price. Always negotiate the price too...they will lower it.

Trip for 4 Jul/Aug 2010

Had a great time. Took advantage of some of the excursions offered at 2 of the "providers" at the resort - catamaran/snorkeling and Xel-Ha. The food selections were good compared to previous resorts we've stayed. The poolside pizzeria is a fantastic idea - who doesn't like pizza?! Very easy trip into town for authentic shopping and dining; small shopping area just 3 minutes from the resort as well. Resort staff was friendly, and although they aren't pushy, the resort staff who are selling the timeshares/condos get annoying after a couple of days. Remember to schedule your dinner reservation early, as they seemed to fill up quick. Don't recall seeing it anywhere, but you actually only get to eat in each restaurant once per week, no matter the length of your stay, which was disappointing. The Italian restaurant was awesome; Mexican was ok. Would have been nice to have a gym/fitness center, but unfortunately there wasn't one.

humid buggy unhelpful

i tried to call the room for a wake up call. 15 times i was hung up on. i spoke both english and spanish in my attempts. I never got any assistance. when i went to the front desk and let them know i had killed more than 20 ants in my bathroom and yet they continues to crawl around my sink and safe, the staff assured me it would be checked out.. nobody came. when i tried to use my US dollars given to me from the occidental "tour" of the facilities at the gift shop to pay for internet which i thought was going to be free and apparently was not, i was told i would receive no change. where i live i dont just give away 5 dollars.i asked where i could find the "disco" of 3 staff and nobody could tell me. I found it when i wandered in on the last night of my stay. the mattress was extremely hard, i had little to no working air conditioning in my room.when i woke everyday my clothes were damp from the moisture of hanging out. i killed two rather large cockroaches. One i took a picture of on my wall. the bed had ants crawling on it so i slept in my hammock one night because it was cooler outside than in my room and had no bugs to crawl on me.no resolution was ever made except the help i received from other guests as to how to get the air conditioning to work better by closing the bathroom door on the very last night of my stay.

great time after problem checking in!!

I booked this hotel for my son and 3 of his friends. We had stayed at the allegro playacar in the fall and really enjoyed it! They had a great time. Food in the italian and mexican restaurants were wonderful as well as the buffets!! The only down side was the difficult time they were given when they checked in because their rooms were to be next to each other. And when they checked in and the rooms were not next to one another, they were given a very difficult time in accomodating them.

Not Even Worth the Low Price

We chose Allegro Playacar because of the all inclusive price. We would not go again if it were free! We stayed at the resort five years ago; it appears as though no upkeep has been done on the guest rooms in the past five years. The room was deplorable with the stench of mold and sewage. Our toilet was backed up on arrival and we killed large cockroaches in our room. It felt as though we were sleeping on a pad of cement. It was a LONG week and we were thrilled to leave!
