Good value, great setting
Lowkey tourists Dec 14, 2009
We wanted a nice restful vacation and we got exactly what we looked for. We had never stayed at an all inclusive place before ... - usually more independent travelers, but we were looking for "easy." Dreams was at the mid-price point - the food was not the greatest, but it was fine (good breakfast with made to order omlettes and good salad bar for lunch). Dinners weren't gourmet, but we weren't paying gourmet prices, either. There weren't a lot of people there (2nd week of Dec), which was great for us. We're in our late 40s, not big party people, so we were looking for a nice, clean, quiet place to be. There were activities if you were looking for them, but we weren't! Not a lot of kids, which was great. Most guests are US or Canadian. Great staff, good service, great room - we went for the jr suite with jacuzzi - PS, the jacuzzi is not a hot tub, but a dipping pool. We didn't use it, but nice to have anyway. Our room was a 2 story on the penthouse floor with sitting room and 1/2 bath down iwth balcony and nice bedroom and full bath with double shower upstairs with balcony. Free wireless staying in the "tower." Super room with a great view. Place was quiet enough that we could leave the door open at night to hear the surf without hearing music or anything below. No lines or waiting for anything. Nice adults only pool. Good mix between older guests and younger guests. Not chintzy on drinks - good pours on all. We would definitely go back, especially for the money. [...] Husband got a massage that he liked a lot, but the prices are "resort" for spa services. Literature says no tipping, but most folks did tip for drinks and some food, mostly because the service was good and tips didn't seem to be expected. Service didn't seem to vary whether we tipped or not. Also, beach is in a sort of private cove, so you don't get a whole lot of vendors on the beach; also, it's not a time share, so no one is trying to sell you a condo while you're there.

Mostly good; don't go alone
DD77 Dec 14, 2009
Positives: Beautiful spot and a nice facility. Food was better than it had to be and staff (especially bartenders) were ... friendly and efficient. None of the shenanigans I've seen at other all-in's such as waiting for service, watered-down drinks, limited choices. And no reservations needed for restaurants and long pants only required at one (Portofino). Negatives: I travelled solo and was treated like some kind of freak. Other guests were either families, honeymooners with wedding parties in tow or older group travelers. I have no problem traveling alone (I had time before the holidays; my gf did not. Not a big deal to us.) But at every restaurant I was stuck next to the kitchen, the busboy station, or in a far flung corner next to a family with squalling brats put there to be away from the general population. And I was routinely served last. My room was always cleaned last. (The maid would be in the room next to me when I went to the gym and when I returned an hour later she'd be in the room on the other side of me, but my room was still not made up. Every day. So, I spent a lot of time with a dirty room, wet towels and empty minibar.) This got old fast. I don't think they were malicious about this; it just seems efficient to them. I kept checking my pesos to see if there was some mark or sign on them that made them worth less than those of the couples and families, but I never found it. Also, some of the wedding party people were very loud, coming back after bars closed about 3am slamming doors and running around the halls. One group took over the "quiet" pool and jacuzzi for 3 days and terrorized the rest of the guests. The hotel was negligent in not enforcing the quiet pool rules, nor in cutting off clearly intoxicated, belligerant jerks that were significantly lowering the quality of life for the rest of us. They just hung us out to dry.

This was our 5th time to Dreams Puerto Vallarta and we love it every time. This is not a good place for small kids as the ... wave on the beach can be very big this time of year. We love the great service and the property does a good job of keeping most of the same staff there year after year. The food is excellent! We went fishing on the bay, shopping in town and had a lot of pallapa time.

As for shopping in old town, don't go when the ships are in. From Dreams, you can see if ships are arriving each morning. Prices seem to go up when ships are in and there are thousands more people in then.

Honeymoon Vacation
JDW Dec 4, 2009
I've been to a couple of all inclusive resorts in Mexico. This was my husband's first time. We had a wonderful honeymoon ... vacation at Dreams and want to go back for our first anniversary. The staff for the most part were very friendly and attentive, the food was great and the beach was kept clean. We were looking for a quite and relaxing time and we found it at the Dreams Resort. We also had a romantic dinner on the beach and got to release the baby turtles. The only negative thing I can say is we had some money taken from our room. Otherwise, we would recommend this hotel to our friends and look forward to going back.

Great Resort
Brad Dec 1, 2009
We really enjoyed our stay at Dreams. We booked a Prefered Junior Suite...it was WELL WORTH the extra $$. Room was ... great. The staff at this resort is amazing! Friendly, responsive and genuinely concerned about your comfort. What we enjoyed the most was the beach. We are avid Hawaii fans and hate that it is an 8 hour flight from Dallas. Thank God we found Dreams Puerto Vallarta....the beach was wonderful, large and private...and only 2.5 hours from Dallas! We spend a majority of our time at the beach. Drink service was great. It is a good idea to have a bunch of $1 bills to tip, it really does help the staff "remember" you. As for food, the buffet was great for Breakfast, lunch at the Sea Side Grill was our favorite. Porto Fino and Oceana were ok...but still great service and good food. We will absolutley go back.

A really great destination, except...
Jason B Dec 1, 2009
I don't want to go on and on with a long diatribe so I'm going to be short and sweet. The location and the beach are a ... 10/10. The food and alcohol 9/10. The accommodations 7/10 (older rooms, typical wear and tear for a 25+ year old hotel.) Pools 6/10 - the two adult pools were pretty cold, one hot tub didn't work...and the only pool with a bar was small and completely overrun with children. I love kids, but not when I'm on vacation without them :) Service 8/10 from the wait staff and bars. 5/10 from management and check in. Management was apathetic and inept. They messed up check in, check out, overcharged, and when I had my wallet stolen from their restaurant wouldn't help me get in touch with the various credit card companies and wanted to charge me $20 to get online for 30 seconds to get the phone numbers I needed. It is also worth mentioning that on top of my wallet going missing while at dinner, my stainless steel coffee cup was cleared from the breakfast table and never turned in and my father in laws cell phone was taken from the pool. While I might expect another patron to pick up a nice camera or some loose cash, not many patrons at a 4 star all inclusive stoop to stealing coffee cups and beat up old cell phones. On a brighter note, the restaurant choices and service were superb considering the price of this all inclusive. Lastly, stay in the preferred club tower if you can....much nicer than the older tower. Overall, a great value! Cheers, jb

Steve Dec 1, 2009
Although this top notch, all inclusive resort had tons of activities and excursions readily available, I opted to do none of ... them. Instead I simply enjoyed the relaxing comfort and beautiful vista my beach chair had to offer. Occasionally, I would venture out to one of the resorts multiple restaurants. Regardless of the selection, I always made the right choice; the food here was excellent in both its taste and presentation. Even the room service was impressive. Overall, this resort was a great choice and I will be returning in the near future.

Traveler type: Couples
while there, the employees work for tips. even though the hotel is an all-inclusive resort, the staff work 8-15 hour shifts and depend on tips to supplement the meager hourly wage they receive. Before traveling to an all-inclusive resort, go to your bank and get a bundle of $50 or $100 in singles. Bring some each time you head to the beach-bar-restaurant, etc. Tipping $1-$5 for a drink, 20%-25% of what you feel your dinner bill would have been had you actually had to pay for it, etc. is widely appreciated. You'll be surprised how quickly your service will become even better when you tip.

I just felt it in the picture of this hotel with the mountain right behind the building, when comparing hotels at puerto ... vallarta, that this is the only one I would want to stay in. All other hotels have a narrow strip of beach in front of them in an endless row of hotels, so it just wasn't doing it for me, no matter how fancy the pool or the rooms. And I was right. It's just so visually pleasant when your beach has huge natural rocks protruding into the ocean on both sides. The beach had depth so there was some space for the kids to explore. There were two different lagoons where my son could swim in a natural setting. (at the end of the rainy season. it never rained there, just in the mountains at night i guess.) we also loved letting the majestic waves of the pacific hit us, as well as getting drinks at the poolside bar. singles don't worry, our kid was usually the only one around. everyone else had their kids all day long in the explorers club, which seemed to be absolutely great, full of activities. But for us this was about my husband finally having the time to be with us 24/7. and this was the drem beach for that! It was just as great for families as it was for partiers and honeymoons. enough space to get away from the jamming poolside, separate classy pool for adults... staff was sooo friendly, especially our own at the preferred tower. in a fun and sophisticated way, not in a way that they are below us, serving. it felt like they really love their job and get paid decent. This was our first time in all inclusive. we've always been the traveler type not the tourist type. if you know what i mean. But with kids now... this was great. I thought we'd never want to eat at the hotel only, but I must say that after what we tried around town, our hotel had the best food ever. The mexican restaurant was better than any I've tried in my life. We visited another all inclusive in town, where our friends had a wedding, and that had a feel that ok, this is why the food and drinks are free. but in our hotel I felt like this can't be right!!! can't eat like this and then just leave a tip... supposedly tip is included, but it was clear that service was better where people tip. i felt bad for the poolsidebar guys who don't get tipped. at some point i got tired of the all american clientele. a little international feel would have been great. the happy-drunk a bit loud and i'm so funny and have no idea no-one else thinks so -crowd at the turtle release annoyed me. i was hoping that my son would have a chance to connect with a part of nature, but he was mainly holding a turtle staring at a huge older dude trying to hit on a young resort employee... ha, i hope it served as an example how not to do it... but then again other than the release, we could find our own spots in the huge grounds of this hotel. so that when we had not been drinking all day we could get away from those who have. nice!

The hotel is in a perfect location. You are in your own little world at Dreams. The grounds are kept very nicely. The ... beach and water is spectacular. Views from the balcony rooms are postcard perfect. Relaxing at the pool or in a chair on the beach was great. It never seemed too crowded, as chairs were always available. The Preferred tower upgrade is WELL worth it. You get your own lobby staff, separate from the other tower. You get your own snack and drinks in the lobby too. [...], who works in the lobby is amazing. He alone made our stay special, as he was friendly to talk to and always was happy to make a drink or help out.The only downsides I would have to mention is that the food is hit and miss. We had some bad food and some decent food. Nothing was amazing though. Also, service at the bars can be slow at times. The restaurant wait staff also seemed to be a bit slow. Nothing seems to be in a hurry here. To me, this differs than a cruise because when on a cruise, the staff seemed to always be quick. This may have something to do with drinks being free on an all-inclusive and paid for on a cruise. We had beautiful weather for the trip (Nov 4th - 9th). This was a nice bonus. Overall, I give this place a good. Location is great. Service can be great, can be OK. Cleanliness is good, not great.

Good dreams and a few not so good dreams
CC Nov 11, 2009
This was a great resort with large rooms, a variety of restaurants and food, activities and excursions available and ... beautiful views of the shoreline and ocean. Most of the time service was excellent considering this is an all-inclusive resort. Food was better than expected and presented nicely. One negative was that I and two other members of my family had problems with our 'keys' working when we returned to our room. I was the first to have the problem. I was returning to my room to get something my sister needed immediately and I could not get into my room. It took a good 20 minutes to get someone who was able to open my door. My entire family was worried sick about me because I was to quickly retrieve something from my room. The bellman who helped me get into my room said he would have it fixed. Three hours later we stopped at the reception desk to make sure it had been fixed before returning to the room which was a pretty good hike. They said that, yes, it had been fixed. However, when we got to our room it had not been fixed. Luckily we found someone who had a master key, so got in and called reception. It took a good hour to replace the entire lock system on the door. The next day, my brother could not get into his room... a new key worked. The day after that my sister could not get into her room and she was in a hurry to get dressed and return to a wedding -- not a convenient time for a door problem. A new key was all she needed, but it was a huge inconvenience. It is a bit of a walk from the Reception desk and restaurants to the rooms. Also, I had ants in my room and told reception twice, but they never sprayed.
Traveler type: Family
Check the restaurant schedule when you arrive. They are not all open every day. Plan so that you can try all of the restaurants at the resort. Also, when you arrive at the airport, do NOT stop on the way to get your transfer, cab, bus, etc. to go to your hotel. There will be desks and men in the corridor who will tell you that you must stop, but DON'T. They are there to talk you into timeshare seminars.

Traveler type: Couples
Take the trip "downtown" Puerto Vallarta to the flea market area and enjoy the shopping experience, do not be afraid to cut their prices by half most times.

We did a whale watching tour with Ocean Friendly, a small boat, that we really enjoyed. About a $12 taxi ride from hotel. Airport is about $15 from hotel.

As for shopping in old town, don't go when the ships are in. From Dreams, you can see if ships are arriving each morning. Prices seem to go up when ships are in and there are thousands more people in then.

Don't go snorkeling...its a waste of time. Spend your money on zip lines instead.

while there, the employees work for tips. even though the hotel is an all-inclusive resort, the staff work 8-15 hour shifts and depend on tips to supplement the meager hourly wage they receive.

Bring cash for cab rides. The hotel can exchange your money and there is an ATM located at the hotel.

great evening entertainment after dinner, every night. Lots of food choices, don't ever need to leave the resort if you don't want.

All of the events on-site are worth your time.

Almost all of the stores in downtown PV are currently hurting thanks to the economy. Tourism in PV is down 40% from last year and it's obvious just by walking the streets...There are barely any tourists out on days where there are no cruise ships. If you are going to go shopping in the town, do NOT go on Wednesdays - this is when the cruise ships come to port. Most of the vendors raise their prices significantly at this time. Shop on another day and never pay anywhere near what they're asking for anything. Begin your negotiations at about 50% of what they're claiming is the price and go from there. 99.9% of the time that's what you'll pay!

Zoo was awesome. Yes you can hold a tiger for $10.

Do not get a taxi from the airport until you are outside!!! If you buy it from a person selling tours and time shares you will pay double! Also do not change your dollars into pesos in the airport, you will get a better deal at the hotel or at a currency exchange, ask the taxi driver.

Go to Pippis Restaurant. They make the Guacamole in front of you and you haven't tied a Margarita til you've been here!

Check out the beach vendors for silver. Beautiful quality and willing to deal.
--Cindy, El Segundo, CA Oct 26, 2009
Be prepared for lots of aggressive vendors downtown! Nice city but very touristy, try to go on a day where there aren't any cruise ships in town.

Take a cab (50 peso) to the downtown area, flea markets were impressive.
--NSWJSZ, Vancouver, BC Oct 24, 2009
