Thifty rent a car in Puerta Vallarta is total rip off!!!! Do not fall prey to their scam. They have fees you do not see until you get home on your credit card. Do not rent a car from them!!!! As a matter of fact get a taxi or a buss in Puerta Vallarta the cops are not helpful either,15 min after landing got 2000 peso speeding ticket just keeping up with traffic. Not a good start for a vacation!!!!

Quiet Getaway...Great Poolside Service
We've stayed at this hotel a few times and we keep going back because it's quiet, relaxing, has a great ocean view from every room, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is not as fancy as many of the other resorts in Puerto Vallarta, but it's away from the busyness and bustle of town and for us it feels like a home away from home. The restaurant is decent, and we eat there some, although we enjoy hopping the bus into town to enjoy the old-town dining experiences...especially The Pancake House. We definitely plan on returning to the Playa del Sol Costa Sur!

Hop the bus to town (7 pesos) and it will drop you off right across the street from the Pancake House. It's our one must-eat breakfast place. You need to try the black forest pancakes.

Wonderful Family Vacation
My family and i had a wonderful time at Howard Johnson's Playa del Sol Costa Sur. The hotel is very conveniently located only a 15min ride by the local bus (7 pesos per person)from Old Town in Puerto Vallarta. You can catch it right across the street and it comes about every 15 min. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms and the pool area were super clean. They also offered a better exchange rate than we had seen in town. Also the view is just to die for. We even saw a whale one afternoon. We would recommend anyone to stay there and would love to go back for another visit.

Winter Getaway
We selected Howard Johnson as a change this year as previously we had stayed at the Holiday by the marina. We had seen pictures on the website and thought the place looked really nice and would be a nice change of pace. Upon arriving, we did find out that the hotel was further south of PV than we would have liked. We do spend lots of time in old PV and would have liked it to be closer walking distance. From where it is, there is no way I would walk this road or this distance. The bus rides, however, are a cheap 7 pesos to town which is well worth the experience and it only takes 5-10 minutes depending on the driver! We are more adventurous so we never spend much time at our hotels. We found our room to be clean and kept up. The view was fantastic and was able to watch the whales in the mornings if we happened to still be there. The shower was really nice but don't believe it will have to exfoliate for quite awhile with that water pressure!! We frequented the dining area twice and found the servers and cooks to be rather nice. We always felt welcome and were shown a good time. The day before we left we had trouble checking in at the airport and the front desk helped us for about 40 minutes talking with the airport getting everything straightened out so we were able to leave the following morning. Also the beds at this hotel did not seem near as hard as some we've been on and were actually quite comfortable. We have no complaints with this stay. Keep in mind this is not a 5-star resort but for the money, it was well worth it. Our biggest concerns are always the staff and cleanliness and these definitely met our expectations. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Take the bus to old PV. You will be dropped off on Constitution street. Continued north until you get to Serdan. Take a right and there is a Mariscos Taco stand on the North side of the street. It is run by Leo & Estella. They have the best shrimp tacos, and smoked marlin chili relenos! They are also very nice people. They don't speak english well but with some help of others, we really enjoyed spending time at this stand.

Great whale watching - pounding waves
Loved the great view of ocean from bed and balcony - saw whales daily - pounding surf - nice rooms - great happy hour around pool - awesome showers - liked having kitchen in unit - bus across from hotel takes you anywhere you want to go for 70 cents. Great mountain and ocean views; friendly staff; great flavor of Mexico. Love this place.

Relaxing, enjoyable time!
Enjoyed the sun' watched the whales from our room and went on several excursions at our own expense. Paid 47.00 to use the internet for two weeks and four days it did not work. [...] We were disappointed with the beach area. We have been going to Mexico for 25 years or more and enjoyed our stay. Would like to stay in the same area at a little better hotel resort

Puerto Vallarta-Playa del Sol Costa Sur
Rooms were clean and very adequate with kitchenettes. Pool dining and bar areas are very nice. Food is not great, but certainly adequate. Lots of services. Nice mini-market at the hotel. Accessible to town via bus and taxi. Beach not the greatest, but one can get to other beaches. Lots of activities at the hotel, although personnel leading the activities often seem disengaged from the clientele.
