Great getaway

Our first time in Playa Del Carmen. Had a wonderful time. Hospitality was great. Food was great. Room was ok. Could use some updating. Our "premium" garden view was of the generator which I don't think I would call premium. We don't go for the room we go for the chilaxing and fun on the beach so that didn't matter. The activities staff did a wonderful job as well as the same staff doing the evening shows. Those guys and gals put in some long days. They were great! It was nice to have the bikes available. Took those in one day. All over we had a wonderful time and would return again. They do need wash clothes in the rooms by the way.

Great family trip

Had a wonderful trip to the Viva Wyndham. Stayed there for 6 nights with our 7 year old. Pool and beach are beautiful, food very good. Since we were traveling with our daughter dinners were not a priority, but the buffet was great every night. The rooms are good, not overly great, but definately fine considering how much time you spend in it. Staff was all very courteous and accomodating. Food at the pool buffet and in the indoor buffet was all very good. The kids club had great programs and an energetic staff who engaged our daughter on a regular basis. Drink service at all bars was very good. The grounds were beautiful and very well maintained. Only complaint was that we were told we would be able to get 2 dinner reservations and we were only able to obtain one. We really enjoyed our trip there and will return. But reviewers need to realize that you get what you pay for, this is not a five star resort but, we did not pay five star prices. We definately would recommend this to others looking for a reasonably priced vacation in a gorgeous location!

Diverted to Viva Azteca

When we arrived at Viva Maya, we were informed that there was no availability for us & we were being booked at their sister resort, the Viva Azteca. We were not very happy considering we specifically chose Maya, however, we had no choice in the matter. They had a cab pick us up immediately & took us to Azteca. We gave the 5 star rating in this review for the Azteca, not the Maya, since we did not get to stay at Maya. We were able to eat at Maya's Mexican & Mediterranean restaurants; no complaints although Mediterranean seemed very much like Italian cuisine. We also came to the resort one afternoon to see walk around and see some of what we were missing. We watched the trapeze participation which looked fun for those participating. The hammocks at Maya were relaxing. Fortunately, we were quite happy with Azteca. Azteca was smaller with less people; although this was appreciated. Very comfortable & cozy at Azteca; no pushing, shoving, waiting in lines, and less people everywhere which is a bonus. Rooms at Azteca were great; clean; no major problems. We thought the air conditioning wasn't working to its maximum for the last 3 days; requested maintenance who arrived promptly; they checked it out x 2, but said it was working; which is was working, just not effectively cooling the room as it had been the previous 7 days we were there. Pools clean, not crowded. Chairs on beach available at all times, although you may need to move them to get more than 2 together. Entertainment was better than some resorts. Pizza was great for lunch by the pool. Staff was friendly & prompt with serving, cleaning, etc. Free Wifi with some rooms even getting access. Considering the disappointment on arrival, we were pleasantly surprised and happy we stayed at Azteca.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

The shopping across from Maya is slightly higher priced compared to downtown. Azteca has complimentary bicycles with locks to get downtown faster & with less walking which is a bonus considering there's plenty of walking once you get downtown.

Great Spring Break Trip with 2 teenagers

Started off with a few bumps, the hotel did not have a room for us at arrival so we had to stay at the sister hotel for first night. They gave us 3 massages for the inconvenience so it worked out ok. Very clean rooms and the grounds are beautifully groomed. Staff is very friendly, food is good and plentiful and the beach is absolutely beautiful. The trapeze was a big hit with my teenagers! Had a really great week!!

Great Spring Break!

The trip was wonderful! The all inclusive was a wonderful perk. I was surprised at how tasty the food was and that the bartenders gave me nice alcohol without having to ask for it! There were plenty of beach chairs, the landscaping was gorgeous, and the entertainment staff was hilarious. I would definitely go back!

Not inclusive

The location is picturesque. The hotel is well manicured and fully stocked at all times. Our main concern was with the "all inclusive" tag. Bottled water was available at an extra charge only, we mistakenly assumed the water being served would be equally safe so we drank it all week. Unfortunately for us, each of us became sick by the time we left with intestinal problems. We took trips to Tulum (ancient ruins) and Xel-ha(natural aquarium)as extras. Xel-ha was exceptional, lots to do and better food than our resort. Our horseback trip was disappointing, walked back and forth on a beach for 20minutes then spent 20 minutes waiting for our bus while the guides pushed us for tips. Not a "Bonanza" at all. Our trips to the Pacific coast offered far better food, service, ammenities and an amazing sunset every night at dinner.

Do your own research. Our travel guide representative booked us on 2 trips further from our hotel than similar attractions nearby, to justify a higher price for transportation. Definately do Xel-ha or Xcaret if in the area.

Playa Del Carmen 2011

Everyone at the resort was very helpful. The location and beach were fantastic. The beds were hard and there wasn't a refrigerator in the room. They provided one bottle of water per day. Otherwise, you had to purchase bottles of water or drink purified water from dispensers. Overall it was a good trip, but I will stay at a different resort if I return to the area.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

The 5th Avenue district of Playa Del Carmen is a 1.25 mile walk along the beach or a short cab ride. The shopping there is good and there are several restaurant/bars in the area if you get tired of the resort food.
