Relaxing getaway

The Azteca is the smaller of the 2 sister Wyndham Hotels which is nice if you want a quieter experience. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. Areas were clean and well maintained. Beach was nice along with the pool area. Catamarans and bikes were nice to use. Not a 5 star but a good value for your money. We would go back again.

Relaxing vacation

If you are looking for a place to party, then this charming little resort is probably not for you, you are better off staying at it's sister property Viva Wyndham Maya, that's just a short walking distance away. You will love this place if you are looking for a great beach, friendly service, comfortable accommodations and beautiful grounds. The rooms are clean, the gardens are very well maintained, the pool is small but very comfortable, with a nice shallow ledge for sunbathing. The sports and entertainment team is friendly but not invasive, you can do as much or as little as you like. The food was fresh and abundant, but do they really need to put hot dogs in everything? Overall, a great value for your money only an hour away from the Cancun airport. p.s. the three-story hotel has no elevator, ask for a room on the ground floor if you have mobility issues.

Holidays disappointment

Viva Wyndham Azteca is a small hotel with clean rooms and nice access to the beach. However, the food quality in main area is far from acceptable. Hotel management team was very accommodating and helped us to move to another closest Wyndham Hotel - Viva Maya, which was bigger, with more sport activities and nicer theater. We hoped for the better accommodations, but ....the food problem was the same and the rooms were worse despite the fact that the Maya hotel was renovated last year (or so I was told). I wish Wyndham Hotels' management can re-evaluate their business approach for the better.

Great location for good value

We enjoyed our stay here. The staff is very friendly and always there to assist. The resort was clean and there was always something going on. The food could be a better. It was a bit bland, needed a bit more spice but there did seem to be an average amount of variety. The resort is right on the beach and a 20 minutes walk to 5th Ave in Playa Del Carmen. We'd definitely stay here again.

a little disappointed

overall this is a 2.5 star at best. management/front desk seem to be indifferent. rooms are tired with many micky mouse repairs. the walls/doors are paper thin. you can hear everything going on next door. It does have a great beach. It does not have all the amenities Wyndham advertizes. They were working on renovating one wing along with an addition near the foyer. nice to know in advance as the noise could be irritating. we did a lot of research in advance including asking some direct questions of Wyndham. They informed us incorrectly on all inquireis and the hotel didn't care. We thought we had a great deal but in the end you get what you pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good overall experience

The Viva Wyndham Azteca was quite nice all around. The rooms were nice (we moved once due to construction noise), the pool quite nice, the cleaning staff very friendly and effective. The beach is right out front and wonderful. I'll try to break this down here: The alcoholic drinks were OK, but who can complain when they are unlimited? No Corona's which was disappointing to me, but they do have DosEquis and Sol. The mixed drinks were only so-so, but they dont skimp on the liquor! And drinks are available 24/7! The wine was terrible! However, in this case, quantity certainly makes up for quality! Not so much with the food... The food was terrible, I thought. I expected this being Mexico, that there would be some semblance of spice in the food, but in my opinion, all of the prepared food tasted the same. The same bland, boring and eventually gross taste. The fruits and veggies were fresh and tasty, but it seemed all of the prepared food tasted the same and was pretty nasty all-around. I do not consider myself a picky eater at-all, but even still, I liked the Marine Corps chow-hall food I ate for 4 years better than this. However, it seemed to me that a majority of the other guests loved it. The buffet was always busy, and most seemed happy. And, as far as the restaurants go (we went to the Mayan and Itallian versions) it seemed to me that all they did was take the same food they served at the buffet, dressed it up nice, put it on a plate and gave it a name. Terrible as well. I suggest eating breakfast and lunch at the resort and have dinner in town - it is MUCH MUCH better! The entertainment staff was freindly, though the bartenders, concierges, and front desk staff were not friendly nor all that helpful. Most of the guests here were European. This means speedos on the beach, well dressed at the buffet and unfreindly and seemingly emotionless otherwise. Dont expect to make many friends! Typically european I suppose... The beach was great! Only complaint were the ever-present exhaust fumes coming from the endless parade of parasailing boats, jet skis, dive boats, etc. One tip - if you want a spot on the beach, under an umbrella, just keep an eye out for one of the many short rainstorms. Those people seemed to think the world was coming to an end as the whole beach would clear out instantly for a little shower. These usually last only a minute or two. So keep an eye out and run on over to the beach and take one of the fleeing european's spots! Bring bug-spray! The mosquitos can be vicious! Couldnt expect anything else in the tropics! All-in-all, a great place. Perfect for sunning on the beach and drinking it up! I'd go again, but like I said, will certainly eat in town as much as possible!

Plan for dinner in town - it is much better, and a real shame if you don't have as much authentic Mexican food while your there!
