Great weekend trip!

I'd give this place 3.5 stars. It's a perfect place if you are looking to take a quick trip and not spend too much. If you are looking for a longer stay, maybe go with one of the nicer resorts in the area. The hotel is beautiful, the beach is beautiful, the food is ok (although definitely skip the Mexican restaurant) and the entertainment is lacking. It was definitely a relaxing weekend. All of the wildlife on the property was a bonus too.

nice week

We loved the greeting in the lobby. Everyone was right about the scented towels, they were wonderful. We all had requested a KING size bed in the Golden Jacuzzi Suites in advance, and even though they were at 65% capacity they gave us double beds. We all held our ground and got the KINGs. I love the towel animals on the bed and always take photos and put them in our photo book. This 7 day trip we never even got ONE ever! We had to request wash cloths as usual every resort had problems with that tho. The staff is very eager to please. When I called town to the lobby to say we needed more than 4 hangers for a weeks worth of clothing for two people and that we had no blow dryer or wash cloths they brought everything right away. We went to the Japanese Restaurant at the assigned sign up time for a cooking table to find even though they said they had them, the had already been taken by the Privileged guests in advance. So there really never were anyone openings we all got in line for nothing! All they ever had was regular tables. We didn't understand why they didn't say that in the first place. After having dined there that evening I was violently ill and vomited several times during the night. The first time at the Italian Restaurant was perfect so we went back. BIG mistake. It took two hours for our meal and the forgot the soups, and the anti-pastas, the coffee and the pizza. We did have a group of 8 people so maybe they just can't handle large groups. The service and the waitress were the worst ever. Glad that was our last night and not our first The breakfasts and lunches were way better than the dinners. The buffets were super every time all week and so were all the employees in both restaurants. The shows were fair but I enjoyed them. The cast all work so hard. The Mayan was the best show and the Fire was my next favorite. The pools & the beach we enjoyed that the best. The place was very well kept. The bartenders & waitresses are all wonderful at all the bar locations & buffets.

Imperial Maya

Nice resort, rooms are very nice. Resort itself a little too spread out for us. It is a pretty far walk to get to any activity from your room. Food is ok, it is unfortunate that the guys have to wear pants at all but one restaurant for dinner. Was refused at a restaurant with dress shorts on but a gentlemen in jeans and a t-shirt was admitted. Night time activities were limited. You are in the tropics, why can't I wear nice shorts at a very casual restaurant. At the nicer restaurant I can understand, but...

Rooms stink of mildew and mold!

The grounds are lovely. The entertainment and after dinner experience it above average. The food is just okay during the day - only buffet available for lunch and dinner. The dinners are better, we liked Gingers (asian) and the French the best. The pool is pretty to look at but for a resort this new it is in rather bad repair. Loose tiles, very dirty, probably oil from sun block but nontheless I fell twice (pre-tequila) on the pool steps. Generally the staff was okay, nothing special and in no hurry to fix the fact that our room smelled like mold and mildew. After 2 hours of talk and complaints they finally moved us to another room and guess what? Same terrible smell. We moved again the next morning to another room in building 8 and it was fine, but a long walk from there to the pool, lobby, and restraunts. Probably wouldn't go back here.

Not a 5 star hotel

It is advertised as a 5 star but in reality you do not get 5 star unless you take the privilege package they offer. There was only beer in the room, nothing to eat from 4 to 6pm after they close lunch and get ready for dinner. You have to go to your room and order food from there (what about if you are at the pool or somewhere else?) Some restaurants had a 50 min waiting time to eat (unacceptable). the chairs at the pool were in the sun, no shade! and you cannot used the beds by the pool or the beach unless you are privelege, also only privilege have acces to the teppanyaki tables at the japannesse restaurant. the botton part of my swimsute was stolen from the balcony!! No entertainment in the pool

Excellent Choice...

Thoroughly enjoyed the Valentin Imperial Maya. We were there Jun 8-12 when occupancy was quite low so had no issues with crowds or service. The service was superb. All meals were excellent. They do have activities for the evenings, some are worth catching, others not so much. Totally depends on personal taste. The spa was very nice, slightly pricier than U.S. but the service was very good. Beach was very clean with a small roped off area for swimmers and a sandy bottom. The rest of beach is coral or rock. Good internet access in lobby and at various locations near guest rooms. The grounds and facilities are impeccable, very clean and safe. A gate with guard at the entrance. No vendors at the beach. El Cafe, or the coffee bar is a must, wonderful service in a great comfortable room and very good coffee. Tipping is optional but very much appreciated. Overall, a very enjoyable and relaxing experience, highly recommended.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

Don't be afraid to order a main course as an appetizer. The food is excellent but portions are small. We tried a few of each item in most cases, expecially the desserts. Don't waste money on purchasing a bottle of wine at the restaraunts when all the other drinks are included.
