Overview

Riu Palace Riviera Maya lies within its own swaying palm forest secluded from the rest of the world, complete with stone water features and pagoda-like grandeur. Ornate wood carvings contrasts the hotel s sand-colored palette inside the walls, while the pools outside seem to stretch right into the ocean itself. Try food from every continent, with Japanese bites at Yashima, Brazilian delicacies at Botafogo and the home-cooked taste of the grill at Chillis Steakhouse. Though relaxation is the order of the day, there s plenty of scope for action onsite with kayaking, scuba lessons and the well-polished dancefloor at nightclub, La Pinata.

Beach Vacation

Would recommend Fri, Jan 1, 2016
Awesome place. I was blown away and the food, drinks, shows, activities, and beach was awesome. The only thing that was a bummer was there was a tropical storm that blew through before I got there and there was quite a bit of seed weed going out to the ocean. This will be a yearly vacation spot, for sure

One of the worst experiences ever in Mexico

Would not recommend Mon, Dec 14, 2015
First off, the entire hotel smelled like mold. Our first room progressively smelled worse everytime we returned. After calling the front desk, the cleaning lady came, didn't speak any English and ran out (which generally isn't an issue, but in this case she talked way too fast and left faster than I could ask to repeat as I understand Spanish when it is spoken slowly). After waiting an hour and no one coming back, I called the front desk again and another person came with an air freshener which they put into the vent, as that is where the mold came from. At first it helped, but we left for dinner and upon coming back, the smell was even worse than before. I called the front desk and finally got a room change. The upgrade was awesome as it was a beach view. The room also didn't smell (at first). Then 2 days later the mold smell started to seep in and we were back to stage one, although the smell never got as bad. Then a few more days later, I found a cockroach in the bathroom and a moth the next day after. Not to mention that our other friends rooms had ants in the bathrooms and in their beds. Secondly, the food was atrocious. Everything was overcooked and burnt. The food that wasn't overcooked, was tasteless. The desserts that had creams, tasted like chemicals and the after taste was metallic. The restaurants weren't impressive either. We checked out the Brazilian restaurant, but left hungry and went to the buffet afterwards because we were still hungry. The steakhouse was just as brutal. The steak was ordered as well done, but came out rare. The lobster was over dryed and not eatable. Thirdly, the drinks were good half of the time. And the selection of wine very slim. Lastly, it was not a pleasant and easy stay and we will never stay at a Riu ever again!

first time in Playa

Would recommend Wed, Nov 4, 2015
Very nice hotel- air conditioning did not work well until the 5th day. Nice to have free WiFi- but it was spotty. The entertainment at night was ok- the people were talented but the shows were not that great. The beach was nice but lots of seaweed- Overall a very nice trip-best food I have ever had at an all inclusive. Would definitely go back.

Honeymoon, 3rd trip to resort

Would recommend Tue, Nov 3, 2015
Great stay. Our third trip to the Riu Palace Riveria Maya. Perfect location, right on the beach, great location to 5th Avenue, great and very helpful staff. Food is average, fairly bland, hasn't changed from two pervious two trips. Nice that there are buffets and restaurants but food could use some culinary updating. Also, all inclusive drinks are great but the bartenders could be a little more generous with the alcohol. Overall great place

We are over 70 years old and we have a good time, but we have a big problem come out from the ocean. You can build some support service, like we ask the Guard by name Francisco to help us come out from the water. Also parents with little children need the same help. Thank you for your service and cooperation. Galina B.

Past its best

Would not recommend Thu, Sep 24, 2015
This was our fourth visit to this hotel. The first impressions when you walk into the vast air conditioned reception area which is reminiscent of the Waldorf Astoria are very good and the staff are very welcoming and accommodating. However, the facilities are aging and there has been considerable cost cutting. There are fewer staff and the quality of the food is disappointing. All the meat and fish that is cooked fresh is fried (some would say sauteed) in some unpleasant oil that makes everything taste the same. After a few days it became pretty nauseating. There was a lot of chevice which also suffered from the use of the same oil. As the raw materials are so good, it seems pretty stupid to spoil it all with one bad ingredient. The specialty restaurants were also sub par. In the Mexican restaurant we were served lamb which turned out to be ancient mutton which stank and a fried fish that was unrecognizable. We gave up after a few bites. The hotel is within walking distance of a small city which has gone from quaint to being a tourist trap. The biggest rip off are the jewellery stores. Many sell synthetic stones as the real thing. Bottom line: If you just want to relax in the sun in luxurious (but faded) surroundings and can live on fresh fruit and salads with unlimited drinks this might be the place for you.

Nice time at RIU.....but

Would not recommend Tue, Sep 22, 2015
First impression was not very good due to prior experiences at other Riviera Maya hotels. CONS: -Hotel is dated. You feel like you are in an old city instead of beach resort. Rooms are decent but nothing special. Hallways look like a hospital. -Pool area/swim up bar area was not very clean. Foam floating in pool and several bees in the bar area on our first day. There was a lower class crowd when we first arrived but two days later there was a big difference in the guests. I imagine this was due to the Mexican holiday. The pool looked better other days but I was disgusted the first day from so much trash floating in the pool that I only went in the ocean after that. -Food: buffet is okay but same food each day. The only restaurant that was good to us was the steak house. The Mexican and Japanese restaurants were just terrible. The French restaurant was just okay. We visited the RIU Palace Mexico which is a nice short walk and enjoyed the atmosphere there much better and ate at their buffet a few times for something different. Smoke alarm testing - we were taking a nap and were awaken by smoke alarms going on and off for more than an hour due to maintenance testing. We were never warned. PROS: -Staff was very nice and attentive especially entertainment staff - Beach was gorgeous and there were plenty of lounge chairs. We were lucky and only experienced one day with heavy seaweed. Hotel staff quickly cleaned up the seaweed and we enjoyed picture perfect beach days. -Location is in a private sector and you can walk to town or to RIU Palace Mexico which has a nice little cappuccino bar and clean pools -Entertainment: the entertainment was not superb but it was fun. The Michael Jackson show was very well done. You can also visit RIU Palace Mexico for dancing and live bands. -Guests: Other guests were very friendly -Children: There were not many children at the hotel but there was a nice attempt to entertain them.

Anniversary Trip

Would recommend Tue, Sep 22, 2015
My wife and I had a GREAT time! We plan to come back next spring. Overall, we liked this hotel a little better than the RIU Palace Pacifico in Puerto Vallarta. Both of the hotels and food service are great and very similar, but we really liked the nightly bands here. The staff was great, especially Sueme's excellent poolside service!, however we missed our favorite dining room waiter at PVR (Hi Jullian!). The air conditioner in the room struggled to it cool during the day, but we weren't in the room much during the day. keeping the shades pulled helped. It did fine at night. The seaweed on the beach was bad, but the staff worked hard every day to keep it cleaned up, and once you waded through the initial clumps by the shore it was ok. It cleared up during the end of the trip. The refrigerator was always stocked with the beverages of choice. Great hotel and staff!
