First of all, the location is perfect! However, the staff is not very professional. When I arrived, they didn't have my reservation/room ready. I had to show them my confirmation on my phone. Second of all, you can hear even a coin drop from
inside the room. No privacy at all. It was difficult to get a good night's sleep. At night people were walking in and out of the hotel and you could hear everything. My recommendation, if you want to be near the Zocalo and don't mind the high noise levels, then stay. If you want to enjoy your stay, don't mind paying a little more and want a good night's sleep, then don't stay here. You're better off somewhere else. Not staying there ever again!!!
Hotel features (5 = best, 1 = worst):
Short walk from hotel
Walk to the Mercado 20 de Noviembre for lunch or dinner. They have tons of eating posts. You can buy stake and tortillas and they will grill it infront of you. Also, you can taste some of the Mezcal before buying it.Make sure to ask for a free sample.
The hotel is located downtown in the very centre, which is great. There is free wireless internet.Negative points: the beds are not really comfortable, as there is some kind of plastic cover on the mattresses. [...]
We were very pleased with Hotel Gala overall. Its central location just off the main square is great but also very noisy. Ear plugs were a must for sleeping! Some rooms have only interior rather than exterior windows, and I understand those
rooms are much quieter. But we were happy to have the fresh air despite the noise. The bedroom was simple but clean and attractive and included ample space and storage--a whole extra small room off the main bedroom, in fact. The bathroom, while very small, had better storage space for toiletries and such than many more expensive hotels I've stayed in. I found the beds much too hard, but my travel companion didn't have a problem with that, so I guess that was just a matter of personal preference. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. All spoke reasonably good English except the night clerk, who spoke almost no English at all. The public spaces in the hotel are attractive, well maintained, and full of interesting art. The hotel is located right in the middle of everywhere a tourist wants to be--a very quick walk to markets, artisans, museums, and a number of great restaurants.
