Friendly Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico
The Hotel was a mini 5 star.. The staff was very kind and curtious. Our Spanish is very poor, but, we had very little trouble communicating and we never felt like we did not belong. We spent time touring Monte Alban, Churchs, local cultural/historical museums, and some amazing Art Gallerys. From the small street cafe to the upscale restaurant, the food was heaven on earth. The people made us feel like family.

Monte Alban, please see the Santo Domingo cultural museum first. It helps understand the history. Many of the Art Gallery's are simply full of splendid talent.

Unexpectedly Great Hotel
Oaxaca is a fascinating, beautiful, and safe destination. Despite good reviews on line, I confess I had low expectations of this hotel, having stayed in some mediocre Holiday Inn Express properties in the US. However, the hotel was extremely comfortable, with a large room, great view, very comfortable bed, and an exceptionally well-organized and efficient manager and staff. Breakfasts (included in price) were fabulous. Both the manager and the staff went way out of their way on several occasions to help us. Neighborhood is extremely quiet and residential, with easy access (1-2 blocks) to small stores, an ATM, and an internet cafe. Fabulous tourist attractions, shopping, and 5-star restaurants like La Olla are only 5-6 blocks away. We also were extremely happy with the tour agency housed in the lobby, which offers amazingly cheap but very good group tours to Monte Alban and other attractions as well as private tours with car and guide/driver for about $10 US an hour. Only improvement we can think of would be small refrigerators in rooms. Overall, a terrific experience and a real bargain.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
We ate about 6 meals (over 7 days) at the La Olla restaurant--fabulous food and great service. Wonderfully sophisticated Oaxacan cuisine with complex and subtle flavors and a heat level that's ideal for non-Mexicans. Their set-price lunch is a 5-star dining experience for about $7.50 US per person!

Great price for a great location
This is our third stay at this hotel and every time we have found it to be clean with friendly staff and just the right amount of services. The rooms have free wireless internet and a free brunch that is simple but good. Parking is easy if you drive a car - if you fly in and take a taxi, there are all sorts of things within walking distance and the main plaza is about a 20 min walk away. Have never had a problem at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone.

Perfect place to stey!
We loved this place. At first we were looking for a more "local" place to stay, but chose this one as part of a package. We were blown away. The staff was helpful and very patient with my broken Spanish. We asked to be upgraded to a king size, which was done for us without hesitation or extra cost. The room (3rd floor) had a gorgeous view of the city and was far nicer than any of the hotels we visited in the States on this trip (even some 4-5 star ones). Marble showers, excellent cleaning services, plenty of space. And breakfast -- a great mix of local and American style food. Breakfast was fantastic -- best hotel breakfast hands down (scrambled eggs with chorizo sausage, tortillas, fresh fruit, pan dulce, juice, etc -- awesome!). About a ten minute walk to the center of town, markets, etc. Best deal for the money out there. Comfort, comfort, comfort!

Not everything as stated....
Overall, not bad, but really not in the center of the historical section. Still about a 20 minute walk and in 85 degree heat, not pleasant. Pool was so small. Staff barely spoke English. Concierge nice but hardly any English. One day room was not made up by 1:30 p.m.

Excellent Hotel
The Holiday Inn Express Oaxaca is excellent for both the business traveler and the person who is looking for some much needed comforts after staying in hostels, etc. I´m the latter and found this hotel a welcome relief after nights in the Yucatan jungle and small hotels in Chiapas. Having a nice warm shower, comfortable bed, spotless room, and air conditioning were really refreshing. The hotel is in a nice area with lots of medical and dental offices and a park, but still several blocks from the downtown (zocalo) area. The walk isn´t difficult, though. Also, the hotel offers a complimentary breakfast in the morning which has a small variety of foods that may get old after a couple days, but is enjoyable for brief stays. Nevertheless, there are plenty of good places to eat in Oaxaca and the city is fantastic! In the end, I really recommend staying at the Holiday Inn if you are in need of some of the comforts of home.

Money-saving tip:
In Hotel
They have a tour operator right in the hotel and prices are very reasonable at 170-180 pesos per day-trip. The trips do not include entrance fees, however, so bring some extra cash along for those expenses and for any gifts in the village shops that they stop at.

The pool is great
The pool area is just beautiful and we really enjoyed our patio, too. The beds are hard, though, and the bathroom is not ventilated and very claustrophobic and dark. The lobby was really pretty and the hot breakfast bar was very good. It served yogurt, fruit, all sorts of baked goods, cereal, refried beans, chilaquiles, scrambled eggs, & bacon. Lots of juices, milk, coffee, tea. I think that was the best part. Don't let the travel agent in the lobby sell you any package tours. My advice is to take a bus or a cab and visit sites on your own.
