Wonderful Two Weeks In Paradise

We stayed at the Occidental Grand in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico from August 9-23. We got a steal of a deal, and since we had been there the previous year we knew that it would be a lovely vacation. We were not disappointed. The room was in the perfect location, on the main floor, which is the only floor with a patio. The rooms are large and very well decorated. There are also rooms available for people with disabilities, with fully accessible showers, etc. We were less than a five minute walk to all amenities. We also were across the street from a malll, where we were able to stock up on anything we had forgotten, buy something wonderful, have a coffee after trading a book at the upstairs coffee shop, or do our laundry. Kudos to the staff who cleaned our rooms, looked after our drinks at the pool, waited on us at the buffet, or brought us endless rounds of fresh coffee at the main bar. Juan at the buffet, Jorge and Daniel, the pool servers, Carlos and Fernando the bartenders, Menahen and Brenda at the front desk, Gio (spelling??) and others who invited us to the evening shows, and countless others, made our trip feel like a laid back, but luxurious experience. Free wifi was available in the hotel common areas- bar and lobby- or you could pay 30 dollars for 5 days for access all over the resort. We did a bit of both. (You can also go upstairs to use a "real" computer for half an hour each day.) Our room fridge was filled daily. If we did not choose to have our room cleaned, hotel staff in housekeeping called us to make sure that we really did not need their services. The food at the buffet was plentiful and had enough of a selection that we never felt like we were eating the same food every day. My husband celebrated his birthday while there, and I asked Juan for a birthday candle, and we ended up with an amazing chocolate cream cheese tuxedo cake slice that was decorated- and the serving staff came over and sang happy birthday! Totally and unexpectedly wonderful service. The Italian restaurant was exquisite. The food tasted lovely, and was very well presented. The staff was extremely attentive. We were celebrating a birthday with new friends, and the servers there also sang to the birthday person. The weather was almost perfect. We had a few instances of rain, but it was mostly in the evening, and had the effect of cooling things down a bit, which was pleasant. The thunderstorms CAN come up quickly, and they had staff that would advise guests to leave the pool areas if a storm was in the area. There was a disco set up for some evenings at the entertainment area. With the new bar area that is set up, this seemed to be well attended by a mix of young and old. This was new since last year. We were never bothered by time share people - except for one time and that was at the mall, so if you go off resort it is best to cover your hotel bracelet up with a watch or piece of jewelry so that you do not make an immediately obvious target. The beach area is well looked after, and there are few beach vendors at this time of year. Sea turtles are laying their eggs, and so sometimes the beach is shut down at night to protect the turtles and their nests. All the staff I spoke to talked highly of the new management that has come in, and the changes that have been made over the last year. It is obvious to me that the people at the Occidental make a concerted effort to read the travel reviews of their patrons, and then RESPOND to what issues are coming up with regularity. That is amazing, and I would recommend that you stay with them on that factor alone. Thank you to everyone at the Occidental Grand, Nuevo Vallarta, for a beautiful vacation. We look forward to our next visit.

Parasailing on the beach is a great way to get a birds eye view of the area. For 40 USD it added a fantastic memory to an already fabulous trip.

One of the best places

Location can not be better - 15 min to the airport, 20 min to downtown Puerto Vallarta, on wonderful, long and wide beach. Friendly staff, activities all day long, great dancers at night. If I wanted to read and relax, there were palapas and lounges on the beach. Meals on the main terrace were so great, that we didn't even go to dinners at two restaurants. Lack of balcony was my concern when we arrived, but we were coming to the room only to shower and sleep, so it was not a problem. We will definitely go back and bring our grandson!

Typical All-Inclusive Resort

Decent price for what you get. The price was very good comparing to other resorts in Nuevo Vallarta. There are some pro's and con's. Pro: -Good Price -Nice location ($150 pesos to Airport) and right on the beach -Very friendly and accommodating staff -Decent liquor (Absolut, Tanqueray, Captain Morgain, Stoli) -nice and modern rooms with flat screen TV and speakers system Cons: -just another resort without anything that stands out -The pool area is madness. Perhaps it is too small but there is a separate adults only pool that is not so crowded. Also no swim-up bar -the drinks are pretty weak and unless you ask them for the good stuff, they will give you poor quality Mexican liquors. -not enough food and drink options. There is usually only one restaurant opened at a time and/or one or two bar areas. -every time you ask for something a little out of the ordinary, they ask if you're a Royal Club member. For an all-inclusive place, you don't feel so "inclusive". -The common areas are not as clean as other resorts I've been to. The bathrooms definitely need more attention. -rooms do not have balcony So in conclusion, this place is okay for its price. Luckily I only spent one night here otherwise I'd get pretty sick of the food and feel claustrophobic because it is smaller.

A true vacation-not just a trip

this was our 5th visit to the Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta and we enjoyed it the most of any of our 20 trips to Mexico. There were several adventures available to us, but because we have experienced them all, we spent the days just enjoying the beach and activities at the pool.It was very relaxing and the staff (especially Vincente and Liz) did everything they possibly could to ensure our enjoyment. The two on site restaurants were elegant and tasteful and the food was fantastic (especially the lamb chops). The only downside was the house wine was not as good as we wished so we remedied that by purchasing a bottle of very good wine at a fair price. Our room was very comfortable with a terrific view of the resort and the ocean.would recommend a king bed because two standards can be close if sleeping together.there is no need to leave the resort, but we visited Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday evening for their art walk where all the galleries have open house. We also visited Buscereus on Thursday for their art walk and ate at Sandrinas restaurant-WOW ! WE highly recommend this resort !
