An Outstanding Boutique Hotel in Merida
We enjoyed 2 comfortable nights at the Hotel Casa San Angel, driving there from Cancun via Chichen Itza and taking a day trip to Uxmal. Parking was easy (and free) on the street, but there's also lot parking available. The hotel itself is
delightful, with an open courtyard (atrium) filled with plants and vines. The walls and lofty ceilings on the on the surrounding loggia are artistically painted with vines and clouded blue skies. The hotel features an excellent restaurant, where we ate breakfast and enjoyed fresh breads and pastries from their on-site bakery. There are comfortable couches and chairs on both the upper and lower loggia--a good place to access the free WiFi, which doesn't seem to reach into the thick-walled rooms.
The large, high-ceiling rooms are tastefully decorated with ample storage space, large bathroom (and big shower with ample hot water and thick towels) and a comfortable bed. One special feature is a hammock hanging out of the way on a hook, with a matching hook across the room near the large window for easy slinging. I fell asleep in it one evening just after I'd put down my glass of tequila. Although our room was on a street (47th), it was surprisingly quiet and could be darkened even during the day with the blackout shade. The air conditioning was quiet and effective, but be aware that the control is in a drawer next to the bed, with a separate control for the large TV, which itself is hidden discreetly from view in a tasteful cabinet.. Seating in our room was limited to one chair and the light was okay, but not great for reading. I think this is the only thing that brought it down to less than perfect with room comfort and amenities.
A few additional comments include that the staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and desk staff fluent in English. Beautiful ground floor rooms with arched brick-lined ceilings like those in the dining room are home to a government-linked Fonart store, which we found offered the best shopping for folk art in Merida. The area around the hotel is safe and offers pleasant walks. The hotel has the zocalo and several outstanding restaurants (check standard online sources) within easy walking distance. We've been to Merida several times before and would definitely stay at this hotel again.
