A Charming Colonial Hotel In The City Center
This no Hilton or Marriot, and I don't like Hiltons or Marriots. You may disagree. The Casa Del Balam has unique charm, old stateliness, and a helpful and friendly staff. Frommer's is a better guide than their desk man, however. This hotel's very long suit is location. It is in the midst of many of Merida's best small restaurants. You can stay out on the Paseo Montejo, and eat imitation Yucatecan food and see mostly other Americans, or you can immerse yourself in the downtown of the colonial wonder that is Merida. Life offers choices...

Hotel in Centro
Casa del Balam is a very nice Hotel located in the heart of Centro. It is bit Old but very well maintained and has the flavor of Merida that I was looking for. This was my 1st trip to Merida and I wanted to stay in Centro. You are within walking distance of just about everything ...very close to Paseo de Montejo and many restaurants. If you are looking for American TV at night, that will not happen. The continental breakfast which is included was fine. The restaurant in the Hotel was lacking. The lighting is not very good...you feel like your eating in something other that a restaurant but the service was very good. I would recommend this Hotel to someone looking to stay in Centro. The value is very good

Classy and comfortable!
This hotel was great, staff was friendly and always offering a helping hand. The hotel was classy taking me back to colonial times. Rooms were large and housekeeping did a great job. Always had plenty of towels and they made cuute towel animals like at the fancier hotels. Great value in a perfect location. This was hotel and a city that you would come back to and wish your city was more like.

Garden atmostphere in city center
This hotel is just two blocks from the main city square and large cathedral. There are several good restaraunts and bars nearby as well. Despite the inner city location, it has a calm and cool feel. The garden courtyard is welcoming and refreshing. The rooms are nice, not fancy and clean.

Excellent experience!
Having checked the reviews from several sources, I fall into the category of those that had an excellent experience with this hotel. The staff was both helpful, as well as, friendly. The food at the hotel restaurant was very good. But if you wish to sample other places to eat there are several excellent restaurants a short walk from the hotel. The location was excellent with the Plaza Grande only a couple of blocks from the hotel. We felt safe and comfortable exploring several blocks around the area of the hotel. The one thing that I wished the hotel had was a computer for the guests to use. When we asked if one was available they said no but took us to the office and told us we could use their office computer to check our e-mail. While we appreciated their offer we started using an internet cafe on the Plaza Grande. The cost was very cheap. Merida was an all around good experience for us and if we return we would stay at the Casa del Balam.

Check the price of the goods you wish to buy from other stores before you make a purchase. We negotiated down a price, bought the item, only to find it three times cheaper at a store around the corner. The best stores display the price of their merchandise. Others make up their price based on what they can get from the tourist. We were aware of all of this but was taken in by the personality of salesperson. We only made a small purchase and did not lose too much.

Great location for the price
Very nice little hotel near the city's main square with free parking. Also enjoyed the breakfast. All in all good value for the money. The hotel is particularly convenient for visiting the Sunday street market.

It is a short walk of a few blocks to the beginning of the Paseo Montego for the free outdoor Mexican night variety show on Saturday nights. We felt very safe walking around downtown Merida at night.

What a wonderful getaway place
The Hotel was located within walking distance to many wonderful restaurants. And if you have kids there is a Burger King! There is something always going on and you can't miss it. You'll will have a wonderful Hotel staff always ready to help you out. I would stay there again, if I hadn't bought a wonderful Townhouse in Progreso, Mexico.

Casa del Balam
The Casa del Balam is absolutely charming! Stepping from the street to the courtyard transports you to a different world. The service was beyond expectations. The Concierge organized our trips from and to the airport, and three day excursions to Mayan ruins and the Flamingo sanctuary. The hotel is centrally located, two blocks from the main plaza, two blocks from smaller plazas, right next door to the opera house. One of the complaints is that we could hear the street noise in the room. If I were to return to Merida, I would definitely stay at the Casa del Balam again.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
There are several restaurants with tables in the second floor balcony. These balconies overlook plazas and the street. Sitting there, drinking wine or beer, watching the people is really very cool. We particularly enjoyed the restaurant across from the old church, two blocks from the hotel, toward the cathedral.
