So much fun!
I went with three girlfriends for a little getaway, and we had a fantastic time. The staff were perfect -- incredibly hardworking, friendly, fun. The place is spotless. The food was decent. The buffets were really good, and the steakhouse was also really good. We didn't try the other two restaurants because we heard from other people that they were bad. The drinks were amazing! All-inclusive is the way to go! The pools were really nice, but there was no hot tub, which was a little disappointing. The room was very nice, but the bed sizes were strange. One super huge king size, and one really small full/double --- it was more like a slightly oversized twin. It was pretty quiet when we went (january), but we heard it's way too busy in the summer.

Dining tip:
Short drive from hotel
Playa Bruja is a seafood restaurant a little bit down the beach/road. We took a short cab ride instead of walking for safety reasons. On Sundays they have live music and dancing. The shrimp was spectacular.

The food was better than I expected.
I read a lot of poor reviews about the food at the Riu. I found that if I stuck with the buffets, the food was fine. Avoid the specialty restaurants! The elevators were horribly slow and unreliable so give up the view for a lower floor and take the stairs. The Riu is quite far from the old town of Mazatlan so if you plan to spend a lot of time in town, stay elsewhere. It's a good resort for families with young kids but if it is an adults trip you're looking for,....... again...stay elsewhere. The rooms were great and the grounds, including the beach are spectacular.

Sightseeing tip:
Short walk from hotel
If you want a great massage, save your money and go up the road a half-mile North to a strip mall where you can get an excellent, professional massage for $27, not the $85 the hotel charges.

I would never stay in a Riu again
I visited the hotel with my family and some friends. The hotel by itself is not bad, but several things are not good: The kids club is really a bad joke, so if you plan to have your kids with a lot of activities in a kids club go to another hotel. Just 6 small elevators for more than 700 rooms, so you lose around 15 minutes every time you want to go to your room or go down. We were like 2,500 people in the hotel (numbers by hotel management), so big lines everywhere; for sure the pools are not enough when the hotel is full. The bartenders and waitress were trying to give good service but with that crowd? I saw cockroaches in several places of the hotel so I assume they didn't fumigate that often, even one of my friends saw two in his room. The food didn't taste bad but my wife and one friend got intoxicated during the last night, and the hotel manager was really rude instead of trying to help, he was just worried to get his rooms an even sent security to verify we leave the rooms, it was really a bad situation and he even said he would prefer a bad reputation than help the customer. So my recommendation is stay away of this hotel.

Good
We boogie boarded most days, jellyfish stopped us one day from getting in the ocean. The boards were not available after 2 pm?? I would have liked them until dark! This was OK but compared to Riu in Puerta V and Cancun there were too many children and not one pool just for adults!

Great relaxing honeymoon
We went to Mazatlan for our honeymoon. It was a great place to relax and sit by the pool or ocean. The food at the hotel was wonderful. The staff was wonderful and very friendly. The location was very far away from the airport and the hotel did not offer a shuttle or suggestions of a service we could use. We had to find something on our own through the internet. This was a HUGE dissatisfier.

Our awesome family getaway
Let me start out by saying that this resort was beautiful, being a family of 4 the room accomodation was awesome it had a loft that consisted of a king bed and full bath, downstairs had 2 sofa beds and full bath and room was cleaned daily. Being an all inclusive resort the food I found to be slightly lacking in the sense that there was a good variety of selection but food was often overcooked for my taste and many times in the morning there was no bacon in a way this may have been a good thing because if the food had been any better i probably would have put on another 10+ pounds compared to the six that I actually gained. The staff was also awesome they did their jobs and they did it well, another place I found to be a little lacking was the night entertainment even though they have a typical Riu show at 9:30 which was good and a disco at 11 no complaints here there was a lack of things for young teenagers to do, the disco you had to be 18 to go to it and I found that the staff would encourage guests to go off hotel grounds for bars in town, I would add a small band in the bar at this resort at night for people that wanted to have a calmer dance scene and possibly another disco for the younger teens. Overall the resort was impeccable as far as scenery beauty and ambiance and the drinks were great too.

As a word of advice if you intend to use travellers cheques don't bother the resort will not accept nor cash them you have to go into town to a money exchange place to use them, it was a good thing that I had decided to only bring half of my spending money in this form which in a way was good it prevented me from spending more than I did which in turn sucks for the hotel staff because I would have given more for tips if I had the cash.
