Olas Altas beachfront hotel with original El Shrimp Bucket location
Located in the heart of Mazatlan's historic city center, La Siesta provides a great base for exploring this area of the Pacific coast. Stroll through old Mazatlan and visit the Plazuela Machado and Teatro Angela Peralta, both within walking distance of the hotel. Or take in ocean views from the famous Malecon (boardwalk) across the street. La Siesta offers clean, functional hotel rooms -- most with balconies and ocean views -- as well as a restaurant, convenience store and travel agency on the ground floor.
Highlights
  • Great ocean views in the heart of the historic district
  • Original El Shrimp Bucket location
  • Travel agency and convenience store
  • Free 24/7 Internet access in the lobby
  • Swimming pool with waterfall
Rooms
Each room at La Siesta in Mazatlan features two double beds, air conditioning, telephone, satellite TV and free Wi-Fi Internet access. Choose a room overlooking the interior garden courtyard or facing the ocean with a balcony.
Features
A pretty rooftop sun deck and pool area features lounge and patio seating, bright colors, tropical plants and a small waterfall. An interior courtyard patio has the feel of a tropical oasis, with abundant plants and cafe seating. For snacks and beverages, stop by the convenience store at La Siesta.

The popular El Shrimp Bucket restaurant is located on the ground floor of La Siesta in Mazatlan. Founded in 1963, this El Shrimp Bucket location was the first of what is now a widespread chain. The shrimp comes in all varieties - a bucket of jumbo breaded, peel and eat, coconut, stuffed, grilled and scampi. Also try local specialties such as mochomos (shredded beef with onions and serrano peppers) and chilorio (spiced smoked pork sausage). Room service is available.

Great location, authentic feel....

I really enjoyed my 5-night stay at La Siesta. The room was clean, the courtyard had a unique Mexican feel. Although it does not have fancy amenities, it still had enough for the value: I got free wi-fi that worked in my hotel room; there was a very nice smaller pool just not heated; and the view of the ocean was great. However, the best thing I liked about the hotel is its location close to the old city, restaurants, and stores that were walking distance away. Also, the Puerto Vijelo restaurant a block away had some of the best seafood I tasted!

Quaint Surprize

This hotel is a nice surprize indeed. The hotel is a quaint mexican style of hotel. The rooms are big and airy. Your room is kept very clean by the staff but this is a mexican style of hotel. Don't expect everything to be gold plated or top of the line. Everything is ample and this place is comfortable. The location is excellent. You are just across the street from the beach. There are many great restaurants in the immediate area with a few really good plazuela's within walking distance. Entertainment is free if you know where to look. Music and good food can be found at Plazuela Machado, dancing at Plazuela Zaragoza and so on.

Nice Hotel

Quiet, nice hotel. There weren't a lot of guests except for two Christian groups who convened regularly in the center area of tables and a few families. The front desk was very helpful and changed my money regularly. They also were helpful arranging tours - take the Vista Tour of Copala and the Tequila Tour (ask for tour guide [...]). The house keeping was very thorough and friendly. The pool was empty most of the time. The room we stayed at didn't have Internet access but it was okay to bring the lap top to the center or pool area. I recommend the Shrimp Bucket that's attached but only for an occasional meal. There's a coffee shop a couple blocks away that serves decent coffee and bagels. The beach was close and accessible. One night there were a lot of police (with machine guns) around because some type of secretary was spending the night close by so I had a hard time going to sleep that night (thinking about reprisal from the drug cartel) but nothing happened. The hotel is a ways from the Golden Zone but that was good b/c it was less busy and less noisy. There are golf cart taxis that can take you places but ask how much they charge for where you're going so you don't get bamboozled. Oh yeah, the beds are super hard. There isn't springs but literally boards underneath the mattress. I sometimes woke up with back aches.

Go to Olas Steak House next door. Terrific steaks and lamb chops. Also Poncho's in the Golden Zone was excellent. A 3 lobster dinner and chicken fajita was $50.00 - including drinks. Also there is an ocean view.

La Siesta is a budget hotel with

La Siesta is a budget hotel with an excellent location. Some minor problems (no hot water or cable tv) were experienced for short periods of time, but eventually corrected. The staff is helpful and friendly, and the restaurant/bar has a good choice of resonably priced items. We would recommend staying there.

Historical perspectives

This is a really nice basic experience with friendly helpful people. Mexico is no longer the cheap experience that it once was, but it's fun to be just a few short minutes walk from the real town and people.

old, but well maintained

Rooms are big, clean, if a little sparse. The walkways around the upper levels are made of a nice black wood, but the overall effect is cheapened by the green outdoor carpeting for preventing slipping. The pool area is new. The reception guys were nice and helpful. Overall no negative impressions, which is a good thing. The attached restaurant is the most popular one on the street. The food is good, and it's something of a "see and be seen" place for the locals. The hotel often hosts functions in its central courtyard which means it can be quite noisy on some nights. The wi-fi doesn't get all the way back to the rooms in the back on level 3, but there's a computer in the lobby and also an awesome cafe (Looney Bean) with internet and an ocean view 2 blocks away. Be sure to use the hotel's airport pickup service as it's cheaper than hiring one at the airport, and forget about the collectivos unless you're willing to wait a long time for the required minimum number of people. The following dining tip was too lengthy to put in the helpful hint section. Food is a big part of any vacation for me, and I guess I'm used to asia where it seems every 4th business is a restaurant - finding good food in mexico is a little harder but it's definitely there. I stay away from touristy eateries, so I didn't try any of the ones in the historic central square except for the cafe, which was a really nice place to hang out. The nearby market close to the cathedral has mostly taco stand/stalls, but there was one street vendor selling mexican style seafood/shrimp cocktails that is definitely worth seeking out. The big street near the bull fighting arena also has some really good local fare. One place in particular (I didn't notice the name, but it's easy to spot because it's big) is packed at all hours of the day , but others nearby are also good. If you only stay in the golden zone, you're really missing out. Having said that, there was a nice cafe, Rico's, about 5 blocks north of the zone. Besides having good snacks and being a nice place to hang out, it also had great hot chocolate. Turns out the brand of the hot chocolate is Abuelita and can be bought at supermarkets (which I did before leaving).

Just a short walk from La Siesta is the town square so to speak with an array of stores, restaurants and the cathedral.
