Great family vacation spot

This is a newer constuucted facility and is extremely well maintained- the landscapeing is spectacular, the building itself is spotless. It has a great pool area for small children where water depth is no more than 1 foot deep. Unseen at any other resort that we have been to are the lifeguards at each and every pool. Staff at this facility are heads and shoulders above staff at other resorts, very friendly, always try to accomadate our every request and most all speak excellent English. Resturants on site serve a variety each day. Not only will I reccomend this resort I will return!

Good for the price

It's pretty cheap when you think about everything included (food, drinks, activities). The best part was the kayaking to the island across from the resort and the snorkeling around the island. The food and drinks where not that great. I was not impressed. If I go to Ixtapa again, I might stay there again if I was bringing my kids. They have great pools for kids! If it was just me and my husband, I might stay somewhere nicer. But over all it was good for the price.

Perfect secluded safe family getaway

We really enjoyed the pools, unlike many resorts they were warm and there were several life guards. There was some unreasonable lounge chair reserving, but not nearly as out of contol as most resorts we have visted in Cabo, Cancun,Playa del Carmen, PV or Mazatlan. We really liked the wholesome family atmosphere. The food was just okay not wonderful. The rooms had great views and were pretty quiet. We will return!

A Wonderful and Exotic Vacation

When we first arrived in Mexico, I noticed right away that not everyone spoke English and that I was a guest in a foreign country. That can be a tiny bit overwhelming at times, but it's also part of the journey. We didn't know how to get to the hotel complex from the airport, but we were met by a rep. from the hotel. Without going into huge detail, suffice it to say we got to the hotel and checked in without a hitch. There was enough English being spoken to keep us happy. The restaurants (7 of them), the pool and offered activities kept us as busy as we wanted to be and kept our tummies full and our brains laced nicely with alcohol (great margaritas!). The piece of the ocean where Melia Azule is located wasn't my favorite, so I suggest they change this! (Kidding). The quality of the pool more than made up for the rough surface of the ocean floor. If you go, make sure you check out the crocodiles in their natural habitat: quite cool!

Super fun! Number one!

Pros: Excellent pool, great service, removed from touristy Ixtapa but only a short distance by bus or taxi. A few minutes walk from the Crocodilario. Food was decent. Cons: Harassment from time share hawkers. Items purchased at resort stores were exorbitantly priced. Food at ala carte restaurants wasn't anything special. We had a great 7 day/6 night stay at the Melia in early spring. The weather was fantastic and the scenery is beautiful. The all inclusive services were great (especially with the help of a tip); the buffet food was good and the drinks came fast and strong. Ixtapa was not within walking distance, though you could rent bicycles to get there. That's fine; Ixtapa turned out to be an overpriced tourist trap that wasn't really worth the visit. Zihuatenjo just down the road was another matter entirely; real authentic mexico mixed with 4 gorgeous beaches in a beautiful bay. I certainly don't regret staying at the Melia, but next time I think I will find a resort in Zihuatenjo proper. My only serious grievance was with the time share hawkers. OK, technically they weren't time shares, but VIP club memberships. Still, they would lie in wait at the one entrance to all the food/beach/pool and were pretty aggressive even after you made it clear you weren't interested. Beyond that, when we arrived the resort was super busy and there were about 80% Mexican tourists and 20% Canadian. I only met one other American family while there. It seems the Mexicans only visit on the weekend, because by midweek the resort was almost completely populated by Canadians. The resort is very kid friendly but I had no problem finding adult oriented activities. One last thing: I had a massage there on my last day before flying home and it was excellent! Well worth the price.

Dining tip: In Hotel

There are three ala carte restaurants at the resort: the Oyster Bar, Costa Azul, and the Steakhouse. I did not get to eat at the last one, I do not know if there were having kitchen troubles but it never seemed to be open. Previous reviews recommend eating at the Oyster Bar, which is right on the water, but I found their food to be lackluster and on the same par you would find in the buffet. Costa Azul, on the other hand, was very high quality and the setting is upper scale.
