Amazing Family Beach Vacation!!

We had such a great experience here. The staff was so nice. By the end of our stay we were honestly sad to have to leave our new "friends." The restaurant on this hotel's site is Italian, with ITALIAN cooks. Which means their pasta is INCREDIBLE. It is close to town. Maybe 2 mins walk, unlike any of the other hotels. The beds where TOO comfortable but they did its job. EVERY room has an ocean view with a hammock on your porch. you are like 50 feet away from the beach. I really cant say enough good things about this place, besides I WILL BE BACK, AND I HOPE, SOON!!!

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

They have a very laid back groove here. Everyone opens later in the day 3, 4, 5:00 maybe... minus the little mini marts. The "centro" is very active at night with a lot of families and great resturants and even better food carts!!! The island of Holbox is very safe. and i would recommend renting a golf card and driving to the other little beaches, they are absolutely stunning.

Charming little hotel on charming island

We felt that this was one of the better small hotels we've ever used in Mexico, and a good value. Our room (#8)was on the upper level. It had a large balcony with hammock and chairs and small table which we enjoyed using and watching sunsets from. It was the best feature. The room itself was huge, had 2 dbl. beds (which we found comfortable)and easily could have accommodated a couple of rollaway beds. Would have easily worked for a family with 3 or 4 kids. Decor was nothing special and maybe just a tad dated but still quite pleasant and seemed very clean. We saw the room of another couple on the lower level. It was smaller but with a king bed instead of 2 doubles. So be aware room size varies In room mini frige, safe and blowdyer would have made it absolutely pefect for us, but would perhaps have put the price higher. And the good rate was something we appreciated. We were very happy with the beach area which was well furnished but not cluttered, had nice palms to sit under, convenient outdoor shower and nice bathroom and beach and grounds well kept. Very cute, lively beach at all of the hotels along this strip right by the town. We loved the hotel's location and that it was very easy to walk to town and get good local Mexican food with many places to choose from even though this seemed to be a semi low season with many hotels not at full capacity and some restaurants and businesses closed. (Our stay in Holbox was 7-17 February, with the last four nights spent at La Palapa). Since so much good local inexpensive Mexican food was close by, we were not interested in eating the expensive, primarily Italian food at the restaurant. They had a large European clientelle who seemed to shy away from the local places and make frequent use of the restaurant however. Might be convenient feature if traveling with children. Staff were always cordial and quick with a "buenos dias". Managerial personel spoke excellent English and Italian as well as Spanish. I would happily stay here again!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Las Panchas is a small little hole in the wall family restaurant located right behind La Palapa. The ladies do not speak English but they have excellent empanadas, sopes, tomalitos(crispy and good!)etc. Also enjoyed La Serenita (similar items served) and Las Palmas, which has egg dishes starting later morning and seafood etc for lunch, dinner. Do not expect any English to be spoken. [...] at front desk can direct you. Our stay in Holbox was 7-17 February. We took the standard 3 hour boat tour of the birds islands and Yelahau cenote which can be booked once you get there from any one of numerous operators. Check around for best price. We booked through Mogul's at their grocery store of the same name on the NW corner of the town square. Unfortunately, we did not spot any dolphins or flamingos on our tour, but still worthwhile and saw many other birds. Did not do the whale shark tour as it was out of season. Rented a golf cart (also from Mogul's) for a couple hours one day and drove all around the island- very fun. When we were departing Holbox, we were able to rent a cart directly from La Palapa ([...]at front desk was helpful in this and other things) This way we could drive around a little and then drive ourselves to the ferry where we were allowed to just leave the cart (the hotel said they would retrieve it). It was just a couple bucks more than the standard rate and fun and convenient. Other than that we did not do much other than beach walks, lounging, eating, etc. So obviously you can gather that Holbox is a good destination for those primarily looking for nature, the beach, local charm, and a low key relaxing time. Not the Cancun, party, large resort atmosphere. One last thing, we experienced some chilly, stormy weather for part of our stay. Avoid February unless you hate the heat.
