Disappointed in Cozumel

Would not recommend Mon, Dec 14, 2015
We booked this trip with 2 other couples - going for the adult only, premium beverage, upgraded rooms to swim up rooms experience at Secrets Aura. Boy were we disappointed. No notification prior to our trip - but when we arrived at the hotel we were informed the rooms we booked were not available due to construction. We were moved to a sister hotel named Sunscapes. We no longer had a swim up room, disappointment #1 we were placed in an ocean front room right next to the Explorers Club, which is the kids playground, disappointment #2 no premium beverages available at any of the bars at this hotel, disappointment #3 We were given coupons to use for any services or shopping at either Sunscapes or Secrets - the shops do not accept the coupons stating it takes Secrets at least 2 months to reimburse them, disappointment #4. When we checked into our assigned room - the room was flooded, the cleaning staff had left the kitchen sink running with the drain plug in, we had about 2 inches of water in our room and the shower was left running. After using the hot tub on the balcony, we drained the tup but it backwashed on the balcony, flooding the entire balcony. We were given a 25 min massage each as a way to try to even the playing field. Now that I am home I have taken a look at the cost of a trip comparing what I had booked and what I was given, there is a great difference and not to my benefit. Extremely disappointed on my 5th trip to Cozumel, 1st and last stay at Secrets/Sunscape. I would not recommend this to any friend I would like to keep. Koodos to Chris in the Market Café Rest...he was the best, always smiling and very helpful. All staff with the exception of the front desk for Secrets, were awesome.

First Vacation Together

Would recommend Sun, Dec 6, 2015
We got a great deal on this hotel package. The hotel is currently under construction which I read about in the previous reviews but it was hardly noticeable while we were there. The staff is extremely friendly! Every staff member that we walked by would say hello. The beach is gorgeous and we never had an issue getting a chair at the beach or the pool. The only negatives to our vacation were the small size of the make shift lobby they had in place and the spa was closed the second part of our trip and we really wanted a second massage.

Would recommend Thu, Dec 3, 2015
Fabulous resort, with excellent staff. Was beyond my expectations. So many great staff, Mariana the Pool concierge was absolutely the best, as was Roberto, Mauricio, Calistro, Nauricro, Rosana and Mansol. and many more. All staff went out of their way to make this the Best resort We have ever visited. Will definitely return. A Jewel on the Paradise Island of Cozumel.

great vacation with friends

Would recommend Sat, Nov 21, 2015
We stayed Nov 8-13, yes we knew about the construction going on but decided to go anyway. We took 4 other couples with us 3 had never been to the resort before. We all stayed in the preferred section. 3 rooms were beach front, and the other 2 rooms were ocean view, back behind the pool. The rooms were great and quiet at night. Beach view was nice too. We had a large room 523, mini bar and snacks were refilled daily. The construction was not that bad. When we were there they were already had walls formed and some of the roofs, so no jack hammering or other loud noises. and the resort was only 1/2 full!. weather was great, still need bug spray at night. beach was wonderful too.Snorkeling by the pier in the 86 degree water was nice too. Rafts were hard to come by so might bring your own if you really want one. The couples that had never been there before loved it and would go back again. Food was good, service a little slow, but that's how Mexico time is drinks were good too and beach service was nice. All the wait staff always smiling and eager to please. Can't wait to go back when it is all complete. It will be awesome.

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

Would not recommend Fri, Nov 20, 2015
ROOM SERVICE • Most consistent food at the resort • Delivery time was 30-40 minutes • Accuracy on orders was high • Presentation was inconsistent sometimes sides were included and sometimes they weren’t and the size was different each time • Plate pick-up would sometimes be lengthy (i.e. you would leave the plate outside at 7pm but it might not get picked up until the next day around 11am) RESTAURANTS OPENING TIMES • Coco Café never opened right at 7am • Pastries in the Coco Café were hard (and could be used as a weapon, not edible) • Opening times varied each day with all breakfast restaurants RESORT EXCHANGE PRIVILEDGES • Were not made clear at check-in • Didn’t find out until Day #3 we could eat at the resort next door POOLS • Condition was terrible • Floating dead bugs, lizards, and debris daily • We actually found a dead frog one morning!! (it was really really really gross) • Hot tub was ALWAYS cold • Towels poolside were often wet • The slides were in terrible condition and were very dangerous in places resulting in cuts and missing skin when used • Slides clearly stated no rafts, no drunk people, and only one person down them at once – but these rules were not enforced repeatedly as we watched completely wasted adults hurt themselves repeatedly for fun TURN DOWN SERVICE • Inconsistent • Got it the first night and then not again • Not comparable to turn-down service at any other resort we’ve been to MAID SERVICE • Incredibly fast • Maid accidentally threw away things were keeping for our scrapbook (we know she didn’t do this on purpose as it could have looked like trash but still, it was disappointing) • Didn’t extend to the resort (we put a towel over the railing to dry outside our room near the staircase and it remained there for 48 hours) ACTIVITIES • No planned activities • No scheduled beach activities • No scheduled pool activities OUTAGES DURING STAY • Wifi was repeatedly out in our building • On day #4 it was out for over 24 hours (causing worry amongst family members at home) • No water for over 8 hours (on Day #2) • No TV for 4 hours (on Day #4) • No power for 4 hours (on Day #6) • Some folks were offered compensation for these issues but we were not offered anything • Not even offered an apology MANAGEMENT • Management photos were in the lobby • That’s the only time we saw them • Asked to speak with management repeatedly related to issues during our stay and we were told ‘they were coming’ or ‘they would call us’ • Could use training in Hospitality Management • Had no control over un-friendly and un-helpful front desk staff STAFF • Maragarito at Windows was phenomenal and provided outstanding service • He remembered our order several days and was very attentive • Vicky who worked by the pool during our stay and then again at Coco Bistro provided outstanding service • Kept everyone’s drinks at the pool full and was a great service provider • These (2) were the only staff highlights of our entire week staff – we did not know the name of any managers, bartenders, front desk agents, or anyone else Overall, it was a disappointing experience with a disappointing lack of service or hospitality. We had a more relaxing experience on the ferry over to Playa del Carmen as it was at least quiet and peaceful. We could have made due with the resort condition and construction if the staff showed any interest in creating a great experience for us. The resort for us was 3-3.5 stars at best and we found the service to be far below our expectations having visited a Barcelo resort in Punta Cana this past spring. The food wasn’t anything special to write home about and given other resorts have this special location – I would recommend staying elsewhere. At least stay somewhere where they care about you and your vacation.

This hotel was everything! For our first trip together, me and my boyfriend enjoyed this hotel and everything it had to offer. We would def. be coming back! Loved the staff too! Nice, good food, except the mosquitoes. I wish they could do something about that, at night it would get bad!

Won't do that again!

Would not recommend Tue, Nov 3, 2015
For the most part, the staff was great very friendly and courteous. The room, though, was disgusting. Mildew everywhere, bugs in the bathroom (ants?), water running down the wall from the air conditioning unit, a broken lampshade, closet doors that SCREECHED when sliding, burnt out light bulbs, heavy construction equipment rumbling outside our door after 10pm each night and bright and early at 7am, and a rock hard mattress. When we complained, the only option that they gave us was a downgrade to a regular room- we had paid extra for a garden/pool view swim-up room. The food and drink quality was a bit better than other AIs at which we've stayed, but for the price we could have stayed ocean front at a lower quality resort AND saved more than enough money to take a taxi to town for dinner at restaurants every night. The beach at the resort was nice- like many of Cozumel's beaches, it's a bit rocky and water shoes are nice, but really not necessary- it wasn't too hard to find a sandy path (or at least one with smooth rocks to stand on) to get into the water . The snorkeling off the beach was good- there were a lot of fish to watch. Several times, when walking around the resort or swimming in the ocean, we also noticed the odor of sulphur or raw sewage... don't even want to think about from where that was coming.

Would do it again.

Would recommend Wed, Oct 14, 2015
First the good. Staff was excellent as was layout of the resort. Beach was well kept and always clean. Our room was always kept clean and the mini-bar was always stocked with soda, beer, water and juice. We stayed in the Preferred section (more on this later) which had the swim-up bar and was just steps from the beach. Snorkeling was good although we liked the snorkeling at the Occidental Grand better. Over all, it was a great trip. The food was good at the places we ate. Breakfast bar always had the same things but that was fine with us. Now the bad. When we booked the trip (there were 4 of us in our group), we booked the rooms with the swim up patio. We booked the trip in August for our trip in October. When we arrived, we were told that the rooms we had booked were unavailable because the were being remodeled. We were then upgraded to rooms in the Preferred section. That was fine. Wasn't what we booked but things happen. After we unpacked and got settled, be noticed that the air conditioner in our room didn't work. Just blew warm air. So we called the desk to report it. We'll have someone right out. they said. By the end of the day, it was still not fixed. Day 2, called again. They said it had been fixed. Not so. We'll have someone right out. By the end of day 2, still not fixed. Called again. We'll have someone right out!. Day 3, still not fixed. By noon, we had had enough. I went to the front desk and asked to speak to a manager. When she came out her first words were did we get your A/C fixed?. I told her that they had not. She offered to comp us a lobster dinner which I declined since my wife does not eat sea food. I asked her if she could comp us 1 night free. She said she would check (she's a manager, what's to check?). Anyway, told her we wanted to move to a different room which we did. Just as we were moving, a fellow came to the door and said the A/C had been fixed. Hmmmmm. We moved anyway. To be honest and fair, the couple we were traveling with had no problems at all with their room. And the room fiasco, was the only problem we had. Having said that, the first couple of days were not so good. Oh, and the request for a comped night. Denied.
