Non-Inclusive
We went for the non-inclusive with two children under 12 stay free (a savings of $225 per day). There are two great restaurants across the street with much better food than Playa Azul. The drinks by the pool were awesome. Watch out for the margaritas.

Two restaurants across the street have the best shrimp dishes (we had grilled shrimp and shrimp chowder). The lobster was good too.

Golfer's paradise
This was our 8th stay at the Playa Azul hotel in Cozumel. The staff is the friendliest we have ever encountered in our travels. The hotel only has 50 rooms so you become more than just a room number to the staff. The snorkeling in front of the hotel is considered one of the best spots on the island. Besides the quiet and quaint hotel, our other main reason for going is because you get unlimited golf on a tough Jack Nicklaus designed course included with your room (just need to pay $30 each for the mandatory cart). The course is so difficult from the back tees that you never get bored it. My wife and I stayed for 10 days and played nine rounds of golf. Plus, a wonderful, daily, all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet is also included in the room rate -- which is very reasonable for a tropical ocean-front hotel.

A small hotel, good staff, but room needed upgrading
We were looking for a small, reasonably priced hotel. There were several things we liked about it, and a few we didn’t. We chose not to use the All-inclusive option because we wanted try restaurants in San Miguel. Breakfast does come with the room, and was delicious. Fresh fruit, cereal, breads, about 8 hot dishes, plus a chef who would make any breakfast food you want to order- omelets, pancakes, French toast, eggs any style. We ate dinner at the hotel one night, and again – delicious. The restaurant is outdoors, but covered, used for all three meals. There is also a very small (7 tables) indoor restaurant open for dinner only. It uses the same menu, and is elegant. The location of the hotel has pros and cons. It is on the North shore, which makes it close to the airport, and easy to get to the East coast beaches. It is also close to San Miguel. On the other hand, most of the island attractions are on the south side of the island, so we drove most days. The staff at the hotel is unfailingly friendly. I cannot emphasize that enough. The grounds are well kept, but the property is small. OK, we wanted a small hotel (it has 50 rooms), but would have enjoyed more beach. Even so, it is never really crowded on the beach, and hardly anyone around the pool. On one side of the hotel is the Playa Azul Beach Club, also small, but you can use this facility and charge to your room. On the other side of the hotel is first a smallish public beach (very quiet), and beyond that another beach club, the Cozumel Caribe, which was very pretty. To use this club you need to pay an entrance fee which is applied to food or beverages. Snorkeling at the hotel was OK, but nothing special. The better snorkeling in the area was in front of the Cozumel Caribe. The north side has fish, but not coral. Places south of town had much better snorkeling. This hotel appeared to have been built in stages, and our room was in the older building. I’m not sure if our room was typical of any others, but although it was very large, with a big patio, the room itself needed some serious updating. It was very clean, and there was plenty of storage space, but … the shower fixture in particular was pathetic- very little water pressure. Add to that, we had to run the water at least 10 minutes to get hot water, and calling it hot is generous. This is a very laid back hotel, very relaxing, but unless you play golf (which is free- an incredible bargain) there would be little to do there day after day. If you intend to be on the go, visiting other beaches, snorkel sites, Mayan ruins, etc, as we did, this hotel might fit the bill.

Simple, Practical Hotel
We found the Playa Azul to provide all the basics our family needed for a week at the beach. We had a large suite with a great view of the beach. The staff were kind and very friendly. The room decor is very simple--this is not a fancy hotel, but fine for children and other people who are tracking sand in regularly. The food was fine, nothing special but OK. Our rooms were in the older portion of the hotel and we seemed to be calling maintenance regularly. However, they always came and were very pleasant.

Great hotel, not for everyone
We've been coming to Playa Azul for a number of years. The staff is the biggest positive. Everyone is really friendly and seems to care if you are doing well. The beach is nice with good snorkeling, but it's small and they allow cruisers to share it, so it can get busy. Definitely not if you want a lot of excitement, but if you just want to relax on the beach and play a little golf, it would be hard to beat.

Dining tip:
Short drive from hotel
If you are eating downtown, try one of the small taquerias, (like 'El Pique' or 'Los Otates'). Much cheaper and still good, local food.

All Inclusive Quiet Romantic Getaway
Best Asset - Service was top notch, couldn't have been better!! Worst Asset - The bed was very hard. The room itself was above average for Mexico and well cleaned , supplied, view, etc... but the bed was very disappointing. The beach itself is much more rocky than it is sandy but it was full of colorful fish for snorkeling but you MUST have water shoes! We loved that this is a quiet, smaller hotel. The guests were able to get familiar with each other. We had the all inclusive package and all drinks were included.. from irish cream in my coffee in the morning to the many, many drinks in the afternoon sun, and late night after dinner drinks. The meals were EXCELLENT !! Everything and anything could be ordered off of their extensive menu! High quality and very tasty. Would put up with the bed again because everything else was just superb!

Nice Place to stay
Playa Azull is a great value for the money. We did not do the all inclusive package. We spent most of our time exploring the island and trying the local cuisine. For what we paid, the room was nice and the staff very hospitable. The bed was too hard in our room and I did not sleep well the first night. We asked to be moved to a different room and the bed was much more comfortable.

Eat at the Lobster House across the street if you love lobster. It looks like a bar right out of the Pirates of the Caribbean and the lobster very fresh!

Good Spot
we stayed at this hotel to go Scuba Diving the onsite dive shop is great its Pro Dive Mexico. the beds at first we were un happy with but after we slept in them they turned out to be very comfortable. the breakfast was good but got tireing after the 3rd day that the menu didnt change same thing every day. the rest of the menu was good but you can order off it for breakfast. the staff for the most part was very nice and helpful but we did have an issue with one at the front desk he didnt seem to know english enough to help us at first. the view from the hotel is amazing the water is perfect.if you do stay here and plan on drinking at least 2 drinks and one meal a day i would strongly suggest that you do there all inclusive otherwise you will be paying an arm and a leg.

Wonderful Resort, Very Homey
Playa Azul was wonderful! The food was amazing, and the service outstanding! The rooms were a little dirty, but I think that is because the hotel is older. My husband enjoyed the free golf. We would recommend Playa Azul for sure, and would love to go back soon!
