Everything we wanted and more

The trip to Melia Cozumel completely blew my mind. From the second we arrived the service was amazing. We got straight into our room and everything was clean and ready to go. For the food, it was pretty good. But I am a college student, so most food is good to me. I definitely wouldn't call it gourmet, but it wasn't bad. I think I would agree with the other reviews that the selection would probably get boring with a stay much longer than my 5 day/4 night stay. BUT I was sampling everything at every meal, so maybe if I had eaten fewer things each day it would have helped. I didn't go to the restaurant so I can't comment on that food. Drinks, the bartender at the swim up bar was AMAZING. remembered my drinks, made good suggestions. All the drinks at the resort were made strong, but delicious. The beach, perfect location. the sand was soft the water was warm. kinda like bath water. right down past the pier is the perfect place to snorkel because there are tons of different fish. Room, junior suite, ocean view. We were on the 9th Floor. DEFINITELY worth the price. The floors are a beautiful stone, the size is perfect for a couple. The balcony looking out over the pool and ocean was amazing. you could see all the way to the sand under the water. extras, snorkeling is free for an hour a day. that was really fun. good area for it. after a $30 lesson, sailing is free for an hour a day too. The excursions that are sold by an agent in a room right off the lobby are totally worth it. We went scuba diving (no previous experience, no certification) at the reef on the south end of the island for a really reasonable price. and the XPLOR trip was awesome. definitely recommend those two. This is NOT a crazy college party place. It is a relaxing family or romantic get away. If you're looking for night life, you should probably look somewhere else. But I LOVED the Melia Cozumel and am looking forward to a return.

Definitely bring a small stack of $1s with you. These people run around and get you everything you need only to earn less than one hour of our minimum wage over the entire day. An occasional tip just seems fair, though they don't even expect it.

Wished I spent a little more

Overall we were not that impressed, bed was very hard. Only one restaurant open for lunch, breakfast, and dinner. The food was bland and got old after two days. A second restaurant was open for dinner with an additional charge of $40 bucks per person that served lobster and steak. Not very many choices for food, but a good value for a family on a budget.

Be careful about choosing this hotel

I booked a reservation and paid in full for two weeks in November for March 24th. When I got there they informed me they had no reservation for me for the first week, only the second. I had been on a drug that made my legs stiff and they sent me to another hotel for the first week. I had paid for a sea view and I got a small room with a view of some roofs. As soon as I got to the other hotel, I saw the walkways were all stones and uneven to look like a Mayan Ruin. I called them right away and told them I could not stay there that I would get hurt , which is just what happened. I finally got back there after begging and crying to the captain of the restaurant. I hurt my knee walking at the other hotel and am now in therapy. They gave me a voucher for a free week there and now that I tried to use it , the reneged on it and only gave me for the 3 days that I was away from the hotel. They let me leave with this voucher of 8 days and I planned to go to a wedding in Cozumel in June. Now when I tried to use it, they took back 4 days, I am left going to therapy here and I do not have the money for a hotel to attend the wedding. I was never notified of this change. I think they were very uncaring towards my problem and my well being. The beach is very nice there but they don't have enough chairs and you have to get a chair by 7am or you won't have one. The food is really terrible except for breakfast. You can't ruin that. Be careful of a hotel that does not honor your reservation and vouchers from the damage and inconvenience that occurred to you because of their insensitivity and/ or ineptness.

Honeymoon

We had a great time at the Melia. It was a very peaceful week, and room was really nice and clean. The food and ammenities were not over the top, but the relaxing atmosphere and surroundings made up for that. We would go back to the Melia and also try their other resorts in the future.

Plan to rent a car for part or the whole time to save money from renting cabs. The resort is secluded, so it is good to have transportation.....driving around the island is very easy.

Well deserved getaway

I can only say that I had no issues at this Hotel what so ever. Williams the was amazing! Every morning I went out for a run, and upon my return, 3 coconuts were waiting for... The DJ at the bar at night was awesome. Any song we asked for, the DJ played it. If it wasn't for him playing some music at night's following the shows, the nights would of have been boring. The only bad thing that happenend is that on our last night, we lost power for like 5 hours, and we could not eat at the Café Paraíso Restaurant, which is the best restaurant in teh resort. The grilled tuna is one of my favorite dishes that I ate there. The team that made up the night shows and organized the games in the resort are awesome! Keep up teh good work!

Nice

Food was just ok. Not a lot of variety. Small resort but beautiful view. Cozumel is not a great happening place but quiet. Been to a lot of all inclusives and I'd rate this below average.

Pleasantly surprised

After some of the reviews I read, I was a little leary. I read from some that the rooms were bad, the food was horrible, and the staff was poor. To me, I know I am not booking a 4 or 5 star, so I don't expect it to be a 4 or 5 star. The beach was spectacular, views were breathtaking. This sells me right here! It's were I spend the majority of the day! Yes, there was only one bartender at each bar, but give them a buck or 2 and your drinks will keep coming. The rooms were a bit outdated, but very clean and waters left daily. Again, it's not a 5 star. If you want a 5 star, book one. They don't claim to be a 5 star, but I was treated great and thought the resort was excellent, especially for the money! The only disappointment for me was dinner. I didn't go hungry, but didn't love any of the dinners. Breakfast and lunch were amazing, so we just did a first and second lunch and had a lighter dinner. If you book knowing you are booking a 3 star, you will love this place. If you want a relaxing resort with an amazing beach, and don't need someone waiting on you hand and foot, and are fine with average food, this is your place.

Have Stayed Before

We have stayed at Melia 5 times total. We love the beach there. In the past the food has been excellent. The past Service has been very good. THIS time, however, left a little to be desired...we couldn't get waited on for a drink! We ended up going to town everyday and buying Beer (Melia doesn't offer bottled or can beer), we ate all of our lunches at locations other than the hotel. I will say after my husband complained to the manager, the staff tried a little harder to take care of us. We left the property most days and feel that we didn't get good value this time. We didn't need all inclusive, due to the poor service, we went out a lot!!!!

Excellent overall

If you are into hanging out and need to be entertained, this place may not be for you. If you are seeking a quieter vacation, can't go wrong. The hotel is located off the beaten path, it is the last one on the beach and away from town. Rooms are clean and serviced daily. Floors are tile but warm to walk barefoot in the room. TV is small and old but we didn't come to Cozumel to watch TV, if you are then you will not like this TV. The fridge bar is replenished daily. Towels are replaced daily if you want, or less often if you prefer that. The hotel has an adult-only pool with a swim-up bar, and people hang out there most of the afternoon. The bartenders are busier than bees, so give them a tip once in a while. The beach is right off the pool and is very large, extending to the NE for a very long distance (it stops being maintained after a couple of hundred yards but you still can go there and swim or snorkel if you like). Walking on the beach is very nice, you can go far and see few people. Locals come to spearfish some half a mile away from the hotel, so there is some fish there too. Food is varied and is not monotonous. If you are expecting gourmet meals with white collar waiters standing behind your chair all night, go elsewhere. At Melia buffet, there was always something to eat for all people in our family, even considering some are quite picky. We were there a week and only by the end some dishes started to repeat, and even then over half of them have not repeated yet. I found at least 5-6 excellent dishes for every meal, and we didn't even bother with the fancier sit-down dinner that you need to book in advance. Buffet was totally sufficient for us. At dinners, there were 18-20 choices of food, counting the salads; at lunch, the one time when they didn't have the side taco stations going, there were 15 and that was the fewest ever. I think if that is not enough, I don't know what is. But there are always people with noses high up in the air, so some reviews are from those. Take them for what they are worth. If you tip your waiter at the buffet $1 every couple of drinks, you will make them very happy and will get a lot of attention. They are attentive even without that though. We did not get bothered at all with time share salesmen at Melia. We did get into a timeshare presentation from the get-go at the airport, though, however out of it we got a $20/day car rental for the duration of our stay plus tickets to Punta Sur (another $35), and the hotel we went to see was one we wanted to visit for future information anyway, so it was ok. Once you have been to one timeshare presentation, you know how to handle it and it didn't bother us too much. Renting a car was an excellent thing. Highly recommend it, although you can get by with a scooter. Having AC in the car was very nice to cool down after beach time. You will want to go around the island, the beaches on the south side are very nice to splash in the surf. Do not snorkel on the south side - strong bottom currents move all the surf water away from the shore. I nearly got in trouble, fortunately realized it early that it was way too easy to swim away from the shore, and was able to swim back to shore, which was a struggle. Overall, I would easily recommend Melia to people who want a peaceful vacation. The only inconvenience is, there is no internet in the room. There is free internet in the lobby, where all the facebook-dependent teenagers gather in the evening.

Entertainment tip: Short drive from hotel

Dolphin Adventure. I think this is a very fun thing to do, especially if you are not from a dolphin country. Do not book a morning slot, however. Cruise ships come in at 10 and their people come in in droves, massing up the entire schedule. The part moved our 10 AM reservation to noon, then further delayed. We didn't get into water until 1 PM, were tired and sunburned. By 2:30 PM, all cruise people were gone and swim with dolphins groups were down to 3-5 people from the earlier 10-12. Go at 2-3 PM.
