Great romantic get away

This property was a charming, comfortable, clean, and well located off the beaten tourist track of shops, etc., yet within easy walking distance of great restaurants and services. The staff was very friend, helpful, and polite, with good English. We would return to this property in an instant.

Great little hacienda

Would definatley recommend the Hacienda San Miguel to other travelers. It's location is perfect and the very low keyed atmosphere was to our liking. If you are looking for an all-inclusive type resort this is not for you. Seems that most of the other patrons had been comimg here for years (15-20) and many of them stay for 30+ days at a time. Next time I would choose a suite rather than the studio. Our room did have a nice little kitchen, in which we prepared a couple of dinners and a breakfast. They have a great barbeque where we were able to grill a couple of steaks and some delicious veggies. I would definately ask for a room NOT facing the street. The windows open onto the sidewalk and the street lights are very bright making it impossible to open up at night. The cooler does work but is very loud. Same with the refrigerator - we finally unplugged it at night so we could sleep. Bed was marginal - sort of like many beds in Mexico - hard! But the price was right and is within walking distance to downtown square and ferry dock. The staff was great and even went out of their way to help us with a glitch in our return flight. We will return!

The Money Bar is a great place to go and hang out for the day. They have terrific snorkeling or even diving not too far off shore. Wonderful bar/beach area open to the public if you are willing to buy drinks or food.

City Center

Great location for viewing the Carneval parade. Just one-half block from the main waterfront street. Three blocks from the main downtown square and ferry terminal. Easy walking distance to restaurants and shops and scooter rental. Rooms are nicely appointed and authentic touches. Balcony to enjoy sunrise and continental breakfast (delivered to room included in price). We booked a garden view but were told at check in that our room was not available because another couple had extended their stay. Street view was a little noisy in the morning. Recommend garden view if possible but street is tolerable for a short stay.

"Money Bar" just before National Park (Chukuunab sp?) to the south is good for snorkeling and does not charge for access to water as long as you sit for a few drinks or food. Fill a water bottle with bread crumbs for fish food for a wild experience.

relaxed, comfortable, safe

This was our 5th stay at the Hacienda. I can go to more "fancy" places but I choose not to. The Hacienda is comfortable, the staff great, clean, very hard working maids. It is so close to town, the restaurants, shopping yet so quiet. I can not think of a better way to spend a vacation then to be greeted with rolls, coffee and juice on my veranda overlooking a quiet pretty courtyard every morning.

Beautiful surroundings!

We loved being close to town, walking to many restaurants, and just a half a block to enjoy the waterfront. We had some trouble with the refrigerator that was finally resolved, however we had to unplug it at night because it made so much noise. We asked to have black-out curtains put up since we couldn't sleep with the street lamp lighting up our room. It took several requests before someone finally put up a bedspread to block out some of the light. On the third day we finally had black-out curtains put up. Wish we had a table and a couple chairs in the room...there were bar stools and a small counter to have meals. Maria was great...our room was cleaned each day and we really enjoyed her towel sculptures...a true artist. All in all an enjoyable time.

Great in-town hotel!

The hotel is located on a side street 1/2 block from the ocean on the north side of town. There's a lush courtyard with seating for guests. Our room had balconies overlooking the street on one side and a small covered area on the courtyard side. We liked sitting on the street side, where there was a minor amount of daily activity as well as the quiet of the courtyard side. The hotel seems to appeal to adults instead of families, and guests occasially gather in the courtyard to chat. A guest told us that an ex-govenor lived in the attached home on one side, with windows overlooking the courtyard. The street was more open and up-scale than some other San Miguel neighborhoods. We loved walking around town and to the ocean every evening, beer in hand, to watch the sunset. We rented a scooter and got everywhere we wanted to go on the island and we didn't miss being on the ocean, the convenience of walking around town really made up for it. The staff at the hotel were wonderful and having a little kitchen is really nice (although the refrigerator was a little noisy). The best restaurant in town is a few blocks away on 5th, "Kinta"; excellent cuisine and decor at reasonable prices.

The best restaurants in town are owned by the brothers [...] from Colorado (although their mother is from Mexico City and Uncle lives in Cozumel), Kinta and Kondesa. Kinta has been around for three years and Kondesa just opened at the end of 2010. The food is fresh and inventive, and our experience with everything we ordered was either very good to just downright amazing. I recommend the Peskado Koketo, the catch of the day with sweet potato mash, a poblano pepper emulsion with red pepper chipotle drizzle. The owner told me it had a sauce of green pumpkin seeds, not mentioned on the menu, but whatever it was, it was amazing. Kinto is on 5th Ave. a little north of the main square. Kondesa features more mexican oriented food. The tamale starter was delicious and my husband had the flank steak entre (he debating licking the plate). Kondesa is on 5th Ave. on the south end of town. Both have open air courtyards, interesting modern decor, and great lighting. Prices are very reasonable, a three course meal with a couple of beers will run about $65. Our only wish was that we didn't find the restaurants sooner in our vacation. We hit both of them on our last night!

Stay away from the pier area when the cruise ships are in. The farther you go into town the better the prices and the friendlier the people are.

Welcome Home

I am looking forward to booking another stay at La Hacienda San Miguel in the near future. It is a great little hotel as Gisela and her staff are wonderful hosts. The hotel is located a half block from the ocean on the northern edge of San Miguel's shopping area. It is also convenient to great restaurants off of the main street - La Choza is an excellent choice. I came to Cozumel for scuba diving. Although dive operators do not pick divers up at hotels in this area, it is only a 10 to 15 minute ride via scooter to the marina where dive boats dock. Since my dive operator, Living Underwater, left the dock at 7:40, hotel staff served my continental breakfast earlier than their serving normal times. After my daily dives, I relaxed in La Hacienda's beautiful courtyard, with some wine, cheese, and crackers. I can't wait to return.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

There are countless dive operators on Cozumel. Living Underwater caters to small groups and experienced divers. There was a maximum of 6 divers on our boat which had plenty of room and a canopy to block sun light. L.U. uses 120 cubic foot air cylinders, so air was not an issue when doing deeper dives like Punta Sur. We were able to do that dive through Devil's Throat at a leisurely pace, and had plenty of time for our computers to clear decompression while we observed other reefs on our slow return to the surface.

Great little place!

The hotel is on a quiet street but within walking distance to square, restaurants, shops. We had a studio with kitchen so stocked up at the Chadraui grocery store. We had a cute balcony overlooking the street but I would recommend asking for a room not next to street as the street light was very bright shining into our room all night. The staff are very friendly and will ask what time you would like them to bring you coffee, juice, and breakfast up to your room. The room was very big with even a separate sitting area with table. It not even a half a block from the main street next to the water to watch the sunset. I will stay here again next time. So much better than those all inclusive places. All it needs is a pool.
