Great first time experience

Would recommend Mon, Nov 16, 2015
The Occidental chain (who own Allegra) renovated $20 mil (USD) into the facility. Money well spent to keep up with neighboring all-inclusive resorts. Beach was clean, staff was always friendly, food was both typical North American and local offerings. Occidental Grand (located next door) is next on renovation, and that is needed. 8 day stay had 5 power outages and this resulted in uncomfortable sleeping (Air Conditioning went out) and buffet food getting a bit spoiled and not cleared out fast enough. (This caused a few of us to get either salmonella or e-coli issues..). Other issues are the sales folks wanting additional timeshare, trips, taxi, scuba, trinkets/jewelry or other activities. A simple No Gracias works, but it can get a little repetitive over time. But the staff - cannot say enough about them. Despite the steamy/humid conditions that are typical, they are not phased by it. This is what makes the trip pleasant. We had no issues with tipping both the wait staff & the cooks, along with cleaning staff, bar tenders, and delivery drinks on the beach (yey Olandro!). Because they earned it. What's $2-10 tip per meal/evening/room when it's all inclusive? They don't ask for it and greatly appreciate it. Will definitely return based on the staff. (Hopefully the power issues will be resolved next time).

Worse Stay Ever

Would not recommend Sun, Sep 13, 2015
I will preface this with, the Bartenders and Wait Staff were AWESOME! Guest's from the Allegro and the Iberostar were sent to the Grand. The Grand was under staffed to handle the extra guest flow. The food sucked at best. I am hard pressed to find gristle in chicken meat at home. But by golly they were able to find it. It took 2hrs to get your meal at the Ala Carte restaurants. There were so many people complaining that the Management, two women, would not speak to you if you had a complaint. The have just hired a new Food and Beverage Manager. He seemed to be trying to turn things around. But when you have a Chef that can't make it at the Waffle House, you have a problem. My last day there, 9/11/2015, There was no hot water in many of the buildings. My room had no water pressure either. I had to take a spit bath in the sink. Just think how I smelled on the plane! :( The entire resort smell of raw sewage. It wasn't grey water used for watering vegetation. The Occidental Grand is supposed to be the Flag Ship for Occidental. They were trying to sell time shares to this place when the entire resort was in disrepair and disorganized. Some people did buy due to Barceló buying the place. They are hoping for a miracle. The first thing Corporate needs to do is fire ALL of the upper management at this resort. Especially the two women in charge. They couldn't manage a snow cone stand! Generally when you check-out, they give you an exit survey to fill out. They weren't giving them to anyone that had a complaint at check-out.

Mommy Daughter Adventure 2015

Would recommend Mon, Aug 10, 2015
The quaint style of the thatched roof, hammock and towel animals with flowers is just the beginning touches of our blessed experience. Sharing the beautiful part of life with Loli & Tomas (see more below) and the staff at Allegro was sincerely fulfilling. I don't usually combine people and natural graces together but this trip closed that gap. We like real things, not trendy ie: McDonald/Disney type of experiences. The seamless joining of the island, resort, and people at Allegro are exactly what exceeded our expectations. My daughter and I visited the property 6 years ago and dreamed of returning every day. She was only 5.5 years old last time so this time she was SCUBA certified at 12. Our trip was planned around SCUBA dives. Loli, Dive Master ProDiveMexico located on the property, was amazing. My daughter realized Loli as her long lost older sister. We spent every dive discovering turtles, sharks, colorful fish, rays, coral and eels with her. Loli inspired my daughter in ways she will never know but I will always be grateful for. My daughter and I have never had a better bonding experience in 12 years than this trip and Tomas caught an entire dive with over 100 beautiful photos so we never forget! Tomas was a surprise blessing to our trip and we are so very thankful for his expertise and ability to remind us of what is so beautiful, a gift.

Good place for a family trip

Would recommend Fri, Aug 7, 2015
The food was very good. Staff was friendly and rooms were cleaned daily. The rooms are hot though, we had to get a new room cause the a.c. Was blowing warm air. The resort was nice, the only big problem was that they closed the pools down at 10 pm, we were a bit disappointed with this. For the price though every thing was just fine. We were happy with our stay and would consider staying at allegro again. ... No free WiFi was a huge bummer!

The beach outweighs the air conditoning

Would recommend Thu, Jul 30, 2015
When we arrived Thursday evening, our rooms (4 rooms total) were very warm. We turned on the a/c or at least we thought we did and went to look around and eat dinner. We came back later that night and it was still hot. We went to the front desk and they immediately had someone look at the rooms. Later they told us the air was on as high and cold as possible, and we were welcome to change rooms, but it would take twice as long as to cool the rooms. I fell asleep and later that morning it was so cold I had to cover up. The rest of the time the rooms were okay. I am used to a cold 68-72 in my own house, so I was trying not to expect that in Mexico. The beds were hard, but we were so tired from the day's activities (we never stayed in our room, but to shower and sleep) that I slept just fine. The buffet is in a hut like place that only has fans. Once again no cold air... It wasn't bad if you were under a fan. The food was really good, and the lady who makes the omelettes for breakfast is amazing. I tipped her everyday! Each morning and night there was a different variety of food, and I always found something to eat. I am not picky, but there are certain things I will not eat. For lunch we ate at the place by the beach. They had plastic plates for you to take to the beach, so you could just throw them away in the trash. We met a bartender by the name of Alberto that was awesome. My friend discovered Pitaya and he first juiced it for us to drink. Then he added a little rum to make us a drink. He was really nice and excited about making the drinks for us! Overall, everyone was very nice on the resort and very helpful. The beach was amazing and made sweating 24/7 worth it. I could have lived at the beach for the rest of my life... It had shells everywhere and clear water with fish swimming around you. It looked like something from a movie! We jumped off the pier multiple times and stayed in the water. There was plenty of chairs and shade if you want to stay out of the sun. It really felt like we were in a different country and not somewhere in the US. The resort is in the middle of a protected area, so there is not much around the resort. I liked that aspect of it, but really wish there was more A/C. It is really my only complaint about my experience there. It might be a great place to stay during their winter time! We talked to other people staying from other countries and it seemed like maybe Americans are cold people. No one else seemed to be bothered by the warmness as we sweat was running down our faces and backs. There is a lot for kids to do including a kids camp, but not much for adults to do at night. During the day there is a pottery painting place on the beach and it was so much fun! The girl who runs the small shop is really nice and makes your pottery look awesome! She is taking a break from school to support her family and save up money to go back to school, because they have to pay for all of their supplies. We went into town (18$ each way) a couple of nights and it was fine. I really like to go on adventures when I am on vacation. If you are looking for a lively resort at night this would not be it. It is quiet at night which is nice. We also went down to the beach, and I recommend taking big spray! It was so nice and quiet, but the bugs were biting us so much we had to leave. We had so much fun despite the lack of A/C everywhere on the resort.

Great for Diving but otherwise unpleasant

Would not recommend Tue, May 26, 2015
First the good parts: The hotel has a nice property with several pools and it is in an ideal location for scuba diving. The dive center was also very friendly and the hotel is on a very nice beach. Then here are the bad parts: The food is terrible. You can always find something that you can eat, but even the best of the food would be described as just edible. The beds in the room are extremely hard and make sleeping difficult. When we were there, it rained very hard every day and most of the property flooded - so you were walking through a couple of inches of water much of the time. When it wasn't raining, the mosquitoes were a problem The rooms had cockroaches and I'm not sure that the plumbing was sanitary. Perhaps due to the flooding, the water coming out of the tap smelled like sewage one of the days. Also - the bathrooms encourage you to not flush your used toilet paper. If you do as told, your bathroom will have an unpleasant smell. It is unfortunate that the bathrooms and plumbing are so unpleasant and that the food is so terrible because if they fixed these things, the Allegro could be a very nice property. The diving is fantastic and I loved all of my time under the water. It was the time above water that was really unpleasant. Too Bad.

the food was horrible!!!

Would not recommend Thu, Apr 30, 2015
The food was so bad it ruined each day for the family. Only half of the restautants were open and the ones that did served the same foods over and over. They served the cheapest cut of every meat at every meal. To go to a nice restuarant it was a long cab ride away. Much better places to go than here.

Quiet low-key resort but terrible food

Would not recommend Mon, Apr 13, 2015
We booked this hotel for 4 adults & 2 18 year olds. Beautiful grounds, wonderful staff & very relaxing. This is an ideal resort for families with young kids.. Those looking for a more fast -paced, energetic resort should not stay. I also want to stress that the food was far less than satisfactory! In fact it was so bad we drove to town every night for dinner. This was disappointing as we incurred the extra expense of both the cab ride & meal for 6 of us. The best food we had were snacks from the dive shack.. Kudos to the chefs there.
