Can't believe it's a Westin .....

cancun Dec 4, 2009

We booked this trip based mostly that it was a Westin (how bad could it be?). To be upfront; the staff was nice and ... courteous. The hotel just seemed older & out of date (the worst being the rooms). Pools were in dire need of paint / refinishing. It seems as if the paint was from something in the 50's (loud & obnoxious). A nice thing of this hotel was it has beachfront (wide and sandy) on the ocean & lagoon. I've never writen a review before and usuallly take these with a grain of salt. However here, we got what we paid for.

The Westin is a great place to have your base in Cancun - the hotel is huge and has great facilities. It has one of the best ... beaches currently. It also has a beach on the lagoon side which is unique. 7 swimming pools - and most of them were empty so you can have a private pool for yourself. the rooms are huge compared to other places I have stayed and the beds are super comfy.

Wonderful service, great beach

Beach lover Nov 19, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We stayed November 11-18th and had a wonderful relaxing time. The staff was friendly and attentive(Constantly cleaning and ... repairing). This is an older hotel but the great beach, easy access to bus transportation, and wonderful service make up for it. Our first room was a bit mildewy smelling, it may have been shut up for too long (we expect a little mildew smell having stayed in Jamaica and Cozumel)so we requested a different room the next day. No problem, they allowed me to check out the room first and it was even in a better location than the first. The beach was great, swam 6 out of 7 days, yellow flags most days with lifeguard on duty each day. Snorkeling on reef just a short walk away. Would encourage you to do the royal beach club, breakfast was great each am and a different assortment for appetizers each night. We mainly ate out each night at different restaurant in town each night, but had lunch most days at the resort and food usually hotel food, slightly pricey, but good.

Very highly recommend a visit to Boca del Puma for an excellent zip line experience. They reportedly have the highest lines in the area, and the service was perfect. They took extra care to make sure all the equipment worked properly and that we were comfortable. They actually went on the lines with us. Steer clear of the others, the long lines, and rude tourists.

Although we were there during the tropical storm IDA we still had a nice time in Cancun. The hotel was average, staff ... friendly and helpful. The hotel rooms smelled 'moldy' and the windows leaked during heavy rain storms. The maid did not replenish our shamppoo/conditioners and did not clean the floors.

We weren't on the meal plan because we wanted to experience lots of different eating locations. The breakfast at the hotel ... was expensive, but great. It worked out fine, you do have to ride the bus(taxis are expensive), and being at the far end of the island it took awhile to get where you're going. It was at the "quiet" end of the island, so for us, that was nice. We went diving with scubacancun, great experience. Would do again. Whatch the bus drivers, several tried to short change us. Everyone in the different restaurants on the island, was very helpful.Change your dollars to pesos before you leave home, to get the best exchange rates.

The Westin Resort & Xtra FEE's

George, Las Vegas Realtor Oct 19, 2009

Upon our arrival, we were informed that the beach view room I had reserved was not available; that there was a room with ... lagoon view, which in their opinion was a better due to the balcony, since the room I had reserved with an ocean view had no balcony! (down grading the ocean view). And the next day they would transfer us to the room I had reserved. I had to ask for the room transfer, and then even move our personal belongings. I was charged $30.00 dollars US per night for my daughter who is 18 (in a roll-a-way). I had also asked to a late check out, to and to my surprise there was a $10.00 dollar fee! Oh by the way Wi-Fi is $14.99 per 24hr of Wi-Fi service.

ocean view rooms are great. They are spacious and big windows are good to watch ocean, beach, sunrise and the town. I like to ... hear waves at night on the bed. the room is super clean. The housekeeper changes the bed every day. The private beach is wonderful. This is the only hotel I can find in that area so accessable to the sea. All people working there are very nice and helpful. The only thing I don't like is that they charge internet and connection fee for even phone card international call. But still I recommend this hotel to all other people.

The beach right at the hotel was nice and quiet. However there is a lot of erosion and they had large cemented areas to keep ... the sand up so occassionally you would stub your foot on a block on cement since it was hard to see. The restaurants at the hotel were very expensive and the pool bar menu was the same as the restaurant. The beds were nice and comfortable and the double headed shower was awesome.

Secluded, far from hotel zone and centro

Would recommend to a friend!

We stayed at the Royal beach club during off season in sept. The rooms, breakfast, and free happy hour are well worth the ... upgrade. The rooms were 100% better than the regular rooms. Depending on the concerige, they were helpful. It was hit or miss with them (the men usually more helpful). We spent 7 days in cancun. It was a lot of fun, but i thought it would be more restful. There are a lot of things to do in cancun though. The day i actually spent at the hotel was great, spent the day at the pool and the beach. Sometimes there would be mexicans asking to buy things, but you'll find that all up and down the beach. When you book trips, i would book them toward the hotel zone and not at the hotel because you can bargin with agent in the booths. We went to chichin itza tour for $45 dolalrs booking it down town.

Royal Beach Club Vacation

The Sisters Sep 21, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Royal Beach Club had all I had requested--ocean view, balcony, and breakfast. However, rather than a queen/king size bed, we ... were given two regular size beds. The breakfasts were really fantastic, but quite a hike from the room. The evening happy hour was also really great. Check-in was quite confusing, as we had been told to check in at the Royal Beach Club, but in reality, check-in was in the main lobby of the resort. Tours booked through hotel people were much more expensive than those booked through the travel agency across the parking lot in another hotel. Overall, it was a very nice place to stay, rooms were clean, the beach beautiful, and the pools very clean. Service was generally good and most staff very friendly.

Tours purchased through the hotel personnel were more expensive than those purchased from a tour agency--also were not as good in that the guides did not really speak good english on the tour to snorkle at Cozamel.

Relaxing Experience

Armysgt1981 Sep 21, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I've never felt so relaxed at a hotel such as the Westin Resort and Spa. All staff members were friendly, courteus, and ... professional. They gave me a free upgrade to a balcony lagoon view, and the room was just amazing. I relaxed in their pool, went to the beach, relaxed some more, and did my daily agenda. I would definitely recommend this location for a getaway of various categories.

Excellent Value and Service

CancunSteve Sep 15, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The rooms were big and comfortable. The beach was big, clean, and had great waves for body surfing. There was also a calmer ... area down to the right. The service was outstanding from everyone we met. We got a great deal from Orbitz and would go again in a heartbeat!

GREAT FOR A MELLOW POST LABOR DAY VISIT

Bonding Brother Sep 15, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Right choice for a 4-brother reunion, or "bonding boondoggle" as it was called. Not a busy time so low key environment lent ... itself well to conversation. Bar/service help very nice, especially Jorge, Juan and Eladio. Good chance will go back someday with wives and families. Still lots to do on water or in town, just not as noisy or crowded when we went.

Great in the off-season!

pitchinwedge Sep 14, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The service is wonderful. Perhaps because we visited in the off season, there was never a shortage of attention. Concierge ... was very knowledgeable, friendly, and provided much needed advice.

Ask for a room on the 6th floor- they all have balconies.

Recreation/Attractions tip

BEWARE!!!!! When you arrive at the airport in Cancun & are heading towards the exit (transportation) DO NOT stop to talk to the agents by the exit. They will offer you the best package deals for the attractions they'll ask you to join them for a breakfast presentation (the next day) they'll tell you it will only last 90 min. DO NOT DO IT!!!!! Even thou they'll tell you it's not timeshare, IT IS!!! and the sales pitch lasts HOURS!! DON'T DO IT!!!

The hotel was a long way from dining but was quiet.

--traveler, payson, AZ Nov 25, 2009

Dining tip, Short Drive

Mucambo is our highest recommendation. It has the best prices, the best food selection, and always a classy relaxed environment. It is a little hidden but it is right on the beach and you will not be disapointed.

--Dos Gringos, Boston, MA Nov 25, 2009

Dining tip, Short Drive

The concierge can suggest great restaurants that are just a 5 -15 minute bus ride away (10 dollar by taxi)

--Beach lover, Minnesota Nov 19, 2009

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Drive

Very highly recommend a visit to Boca del Puma for an excellent zip line experience. They reportedly have the highest lines in the area, and the service was perfect. They took extra care to make sure all the equipment worked properly and that we were comfortable. They actually went on the lines with us. Steer clear of the others, the long lines, and rude tourists.

--mblossom, michigan Nov 13, 2009

Dining tip, Long Walk

Take the bus to the Isla Mall for great non-inclusive dining!

--Maria, Columbus, Ohio Nov 11, 2009

Rent a car at the airport very convenient and only $30.00 dollars per day with full insurance coverage.

Money savers tip, Short Walk

The bus stop is just outside of the entrance of the hotel. Take the bus! Much much cheaper than the taxi! And the bus is a fun/neat experience. not even 1 US dollar per person to take the bus, the taxi is like 20 something dollars no matter how far. The bus takes you to the other side of town. But you will want to exchange money for pesos. much easier.

--Honeymooners, OK Sep 9, 2009

Entertainment tip, Short Drive

The movies at the Cinemark at La Isla Shopping Mall are VERY cheap!!! The seats were more comfortable than some theaters in the states and was very clean!!

--Kikikins, Dallas, TX Sep 8, 2009

Money savers tip

Go on excursions that are all inclusive or eat meals in local restaurants.

--From SC, Columbia SC Sep 4, 2009

Money savers tip

Use Buses,taxis are very expensive.

--DMC, New Jersey Sep 1, 2009

Money savers tip, Short Walk

right outside the hotel is the local bus stop, 6.50 pesos per person, takes you along the hotel zone all the way to walmart where u can stock up on water and snacks if you are traveling with kids. Also see see if you can negotiate with a taxi driver for a flat rate to take u to Tulum, Coba, Playa del Camen and back, the driver will stay with you until u are ready to come back. and don"t be afraid to ask where things are cheaper, everyone is EXTREMELY friendly and more than willing to HELP!!!!

--family of 7!!!!!!!!, Arlington, VA Aug 31, 2009

Time savers tip

If going to the actual city of cancun then take the route along the airport rather than through the hotel zone. You will avoid the crooked cops and save time because of the traffic near the malls and clubs.

--Mexico traveller, Boston, MA Aug 27, 2009

Shopping tip, Short Drive

Great shopping at the La Lisla Mall (plenty of bargains to be had).

--AD, New Jersey Aug 24, 2009

Money savers tip

i would suggest using the public buses to get around or rent a car, it is very easy to get around (only one highway back and forth) and renting a car is at little as $20/day while a cab can be $10-20 each way every time.
