Great service, decent food
n8 Dec 24, 2009
Overall, this is a great hotel. The rooms are beautiful, all view the ocean. The staff was very friendly and was willing to ... help us figure out any problem we came across. The quality of food was the only thing that gave me pause-- then again, it was all inclusive and didn't have many food options that were close. Considering the hotel is a 4 or a 5 star in my book, the food was only about a 2 star. The hotel had easy access to the hotel area and Cancun city as well. It was in a great location for all of the tours, as most of them head south from Cancun. The included activities were also well worth it, and the guides were top notch.
Traveler type: Couples
I would recommend spending some money and going out to eat in either Cancun city or Isla Mujeres. There didn't seem to be much traditional Mexican food at the hotel, and the food they did offer was not very good quality.

this was our first experience with an all inclusive and it was an excellent choice. from the moment we arrived- greeted with ... champagne and flowers for the ladies- we loved everything. the view from our sixth floor balcony was breathtaking and the double lounge chair amazing. we visited all of the restaurants, the italian was our favorite ( we ate there twice) . every employee was very efficient and very friendly, from housekeepers, maintenance workers, to front desk staff, everyone was very friendly and wanted to make our stay as comfortable as possible. it would be difficult to choose our favorite person. we took a tour to Coba, it was a great experience. we did learn to book your tours soon after you arrive. we waited and didnt get our first choice, but we were still pleased with the tour. we wouldnt change anything except maybe stay longer!

Had a great stay. Staff was super helpful, room was amazing, clean and comfortable. Alawas welcomed with a smile by the ... staff and often with a drink. ;) They even made me a special bday cake and had it sent to the room. Would recommend and go back in a second. Only thing is that right now the beach is kinda of narrow, but they are pumping sand to replenish.

Great hotel, most of staff are great, very American hotel though, so if you are looking for something with more mexican flare ... don't stay here. Great for couples looking for a QUIET getaway without children. Beautiful water, but they are in the midst of rebuilding the beach, but it does have more beach than some places.

I love this place
Honeymooners Dec 2, 2009
From check-in to check-out, the staff provided incredible service. They went above and beyond to ensure that we had the best ... time possible. We were completely amazed at how well this hotel is ran. Every day I remarked, "I love this place." The beach was a little washed out from recent storms but there was more sand then what was further up the strip. Travellers will want to head out to the beach earlier in the day. By mid-afternoon (week of Thanksgiving) the sun starts to be blocked by the hotel. I prefered the Oriental restaurant and The Steak restaurant. Both had good food and had outdoor seating. Recommend taking the bus down to the other Palace Resorts to check them out, since all the Palace restaurants are available to you. The Wok and Skybar at Beach Palace was very nice as well. If you want your drink made with a specific alcohol, just ask. The in-room jacuzi tub was nice. So was the stocked in-room bar. We had a beautiful view off the balcony of the room. The hotel and our room were just like the photos on the website.

The most impressive thing about this hotel was the service!!! Everyone was friendly and professional. The food was awesome. ... The Italian Restaurant was wonderful and the Mexican Restaurant and Buffet was extensive and always very good. I think I gained 5 pounds even though I took advantage of the up-to-date and large gym. The Hotel wasn't too large, just big enough to accomodate everyone's needs. I Loved it here!!

Amazing stay at Sun Palace in Cancun
M Nov 29, 2009
From the moment we checked in to Sun Palace we were in heaven. The hotel staff was wonderful and did everything they could to ... make us feel welcome in their country and their hotel. Our room was amazing with a huge Jacuzzi and very large balcony (6th floor has some of the largest balconies) overlooking both the pool and the ocean. We could not have asked for a better view. The food in all of the restaurants was fantastic, but we most enjoyed the Italian restaurant (the filet is excellent), the Oriental restaurant (the Banana Roll is amazing) and the breakfast buffet in the Alamo (best Omelettes). The only negative we found is that the desserts are just so-so. The drinks are great throughout the hotel and I most enjoyed the Banana Monkey and Miami Vice (if you like fruity blended drinks). The pools are gorgeous and Sun Palace has one of the best beaches that we saw in Cancun since many hotels lost most of their beaches in recent hurricanes. The entertainment is decent. The entertainment staff is fun and we enjoyed playing different games. The nightly shows are so-so, but the contortionist and the ladies that did acrobatics were worth watching. We took advantage of the free tours and went to Isla Mujeres and also did the Zip Line Tour. Isla Mujeres was nice and the Zip Line was a ton of fun. The weather was mainly in the mid 70's and 80's with only one rainy day. It was very nice. We visited a few other Palace Resorts (Cancun Palace, Beach Palace, Moon Palace) and enjoyed the all inclusive at each resort. Beach Palace was very nice and didn't feel as crowded as Cancun Palace. Moon Palace was great as well, but very big so if you're looking for quiet and have no kids with you we definitely recommend Sun Palace. We plan to stay at Palace Resorts again, but plan to do one major thing differently... we will tip more next time. The resort claims tips are included, but after learning more about what the staff actually makes (if what we read is reliable it varies from $4-$23 per day - not per hour) we will tip for sure. The staff treated us the same with or without tips, but they really do deserve the tips as they made our stay so wonderful. Overall we could not have asked for a better vacation and look forward to going back again soon!

Great relaxing get-away!
Nina Nov 29, 2009
This hotel is great! It is very clean and looks new. The rooms are as gorgeous as they are in the pictures (make sure you ask ... for ocean-front before you go if you go during high season). The staff is fantastic; always helpful, friendly, and courteous. The people of Cancun are respectful - they try like any other street vendor or timeshare rep, but if you say no they'll let you go.The activity pool area can be very loud, but you can escape most of the sounds by heading to the tranquil pool on the other side of the hotel. (Sometimes the beat of a song will still get through, but you won't notice with a cool drink and a book in your hands.) The only bad thing about the pools is that they get little sun in the late afternoon due to the positioning of the hotels, but I imagine that it would be the same at any ocean-front hotel on the east coast. The beach here is great, although the sand is slightly coarser than I personally prefer. We walked up the beach and found that many other hotels had serious sea-weed problems or reconstruction going on. I hear that Moon Palace has one of the best beaches in Cancun, but Sun Palace was very nice and they have ample seating/great service on the beach. The beach was cleaned every time it started to get a little seaweed from the hurricanes off coast. I was there in the off season, and it seemed like it might get a little crowded during high season, but not too bad. Don't stay at Xpu-Ha Palace if you're looking for a nice beach. They have almost no beach, but you can take a shuttle to beach palace, which I did not visit. Xpu-Ha would still be a perfect choice for families with children, as there is a lot to explore.Drinks are fabulous for being included! Liquors are not displayed, but they have the good stuff hidden somewhere, so just ask if you want a top-shelf tequila.Food is mostly average, great for an all-inclusive, except dinner at The Alamo (the main restaurant) which has an amazing pork dish and chile relleno as well as others. We highly recommend the Mayan coffee. We were not impressed with 'The Steaks'. If you're looking for a great steak, Sun Palace is not the place to find it. My husband's rib eye was thin and tasteless, my mahi mahi tasted extremely fishy and tough. The good news is that it's all-inclusive, so we each managed about 3 bites and headed over to another restaurant w/in the hotel. For the included trips, make sure you know what you are getting. Ask for a detailed itinerary. We were disappointed with our trip to Tulum because we stopped for shopping (although it was a REAL Mayan tourist trap) and didn't have as much time as we thought we would to explore the ruins). [...] was the most helpful member of the planning team; if he was ever unsure on a question he always called for us instead of giving us an assumption. He worked with us on ways to save money at the spa based on current promotions. All in all a great guy! All in all a wonderful place to relax and let go of the crazy-cycle that is American life!

One Of TheNicest Place We've Ever Stayed
Kristen Nov 24, 2009
Just got back from staying at the Sun Palace (11/18/09-11/22/09). This was our first trip without kids, and it was so nice. ... Rooms were spotless and we had the best beach in the area. By far the best all inclusive food we've ever had. 90% of everything is made to order. Had no complaints and no hassles. The clientle at the resort was just as we were hoping for (no 21 yr old drunk and obnoxious, and no kids) Well worth the extra money. The only complaint if you want to call it that, was that our rooms balcony (on the 7th floor) was very small and not private. You could literally touch the other rooms balcony and hold a conversation with someone if they were outside next to you. Not very romantic or private. But for our stay since it wasnt full, it wasnt a real problem. The only other thing I was surprised about was that they didnt have corona on tap or anyplace. And it would have been nice if they had cans or bottles available in the restuarants. The only exursion we did was the Zipline tour..and that was so much fun. It was also very fast..we were back at our hotel by 11am..so still had the day to lounge around. Would highly recommend. On a side note..we brought along travel mugs and would recommend doing that as it kept your drinks cold!

Nearly empty and there is an outside bar that you could just sit at there if you didnt want to eat there. Worth Checking out.

Everyone there was friendly and helpful. The hotel was not huge, so it seemed more intimate. The staff would look up and ... call me by name and most them remembered me from day to day. There was a lot to do and see in the area, but even if you decided not to leave the hotel the entertainment was great. They played games by the pool and put on shows in the evening. The bar had bands and a karoke night. My daughter got married on the beach and everything was handled stress-free. It was so beautiful. Some of the staff attended the wedding just because they had gotten to know us in the previous days. This was one of my best vacations ever!

Not much since weather was very bad. Only complaint that no one seem to know that there was a possibility of a hurricane. ... Otherwise, the staff, front desk and everyone very accommodating. I was impressed when the Front Desk associate explained us how to work the air conditioning, not to leave open the balcony doors. This is the first time I see this in Cancun, where no one seems to know that if you keep windows open, you don't get breeze, you get "mold". I live in Florida and we are very aware of this.

1. Don't use the currency exchange booths at the US or Mexico airport. Exchange rate at the airport was 11.50 pesos per dollar. You can get 12.50 at the hotel main desk. 2. Check with the hotel before booking excursions on travel sites, many ALL-INCLUSIVE hotels offer FREE excursions. We stayed at Palace and they did and it was awesome! 3. Book ground transport ahead of time to avoid all the scams at the airport 4. After you get your bags walk straight OUTSIDE to ground transport. Avoid all those people that are standing before the exit and pretending to be of help they are SCAM artists trying to sell you tours the real transport people are OUTSIDE! 5. Beware! of the authentic Mayan items that our tour company (The Bus name was Tena and was a Green color) took us to. Although I admit the stuff at this Mayan artisan warehouse looked like nicer quality stuff than the junk they sell for $1 (Yes only a buck) at Chichen Itza and the selection was huge! However, the cost of the Obsedien statues are WAY OVERPRICED! We saw some medium figurines for $150-200 only to find the same one at one of our Palace Gift Shops for $50. Granted there was more choices and styles at the tourist trap. But we found one we liked at the gift shop. Glad we didn't buy it at the tourist trap first. I can't speak for the other stuff like the Silver, wooden masks or pottery.

Do an all inclusive. I know it may take business away from mom and pop shops, but in truth would you really eat at a mom and pop or a chain such as Senor Frog's or Bubba Gumps? The all inclusive saves money and time in the long run and the Palace resorts make it worth the decision. Just tip decently and let the staff/residents pump money into their economy as well.
