Just wanted to enjoy a weekend away, there was not enough to do at the hotel, just 2 pools, not very big. No indoor or heated ... pool, it was very windy so therefore very cold. The food was not great and was sitting out too long at the buffet and whats up with a mexican hotel, but no mexican restaurant. We felt rushed out of the restaurant, would have liked seconds at the Brazilian restaurant, but felt like it would be too much to ask. The room was big, view was great, however not very comfortable feeling since everything was tiled, the king size bed was two full beds pushed together -not very comfortable. The sheets were used too much since they were piling and not very soft. The hotel felt very grand when you first walked in but not too much after that, the drinks were ok -inconsistent. The staff was very nice and attentive

Bad food
BK Oct 29, 2009
I would not recommend this hotel simply for the horrible food. My fiancé and I had to eat at the buffet for all but one of ... our meals and we were hungry the entire trip. The one meal we had at the so called "Steakhouse" was the only time I ate a piece of meat for five days. Not only was the food at the "Steakhouse" below average, but the "Steakhouse" was the buffet that we had eaten at all week. Very tough time staying here.

Bill Oct 19, 2009
The hotel was great and the food was as well. The gratuities are supposed to be included already, but if you don't tip, don't ... expect a lot of service. And if it's your anniversary, don't expect much either. We got a tiny fruit basket and a small bottle of tequila, which was weird since we had a tequila dispenser in our room already. It was our 10th wedding anniversary and I guess since it is all inclusive, they don't have many options to make your anniversary any better.

One of the Best in Cancun
Xarion Sep 15, 2009
I've been to Cancun three times now; I've stayed at the Riu Cancun two years ago, (and an Oasis chain in 2003), this is my ... first time staying at the Palace "level" of resort. After my experience there, it will be hard to stay anywhere else. The biggest difference I noticed was the level of service and care provided at this resort. Not to say the Riu Cancun wasn't good, but the Palace really goes the extra mile. The dining is phenomenal, 5 a la cart restaurants, which can be booked up to 2 days in advance, (Steakhouse, Japanese, Spanish, Brazilian and Fine Dining), and reservations can be made from 8a-9p, so you don't have to rush down at 7a and wait in line, (which I've had to do at the Riu Cancun and Riu Vallarta). At lunch the Brazilian place is turned into Italian, (pasta, pizzas, steak, chicken). If for some reason you're not eating dinner at one of the 5 a la carts, (and I don't know why you wouldn't), the buffet offers a different theme every night so the food doesn't get boring. Top it off with free room service, (thats right, free, 24/7), nightly turn-down service, an evening show, a nightly pianist (who is fantastic), awesome snorkeling right in front of the hotel, great pools, close proximity to malls, stores and restaurants, and well...I think I've made my point. If I'm ever in Cancun again, or rather, when I visit Cancun again, I will be staying at the Riu Palace Las Americas.

If you're looking for a great day activity, Xcaret is a fantastic spot. It's not hard to book, (this and many other tours can be booked by different agents right in the hotel). From the time you get there till you leave you've got over 12 hours in the park, some of the things to do: Underwater Cave Swim (a must), Aviary, Aquarium, Snorkel, Swim with Dolphins (extra charge, I've done it before, but not on this trip, it's worth doing if you've got the extra $$$), evening show (we added dinner with it, $35.00\person, well worth it, you'll also sit front row center for the show). With dinner it ran us $150.00 a person, but honestly worth every penny.

Riu-abulous! (Fantastic Riu!)
Richacha - TheRealtor4You Sep 13, 2009
We have stayed at all 3 of the Riu Hotels (Palace, Cancun, Caribe) on Cancun - they are all nice and priced according to ... ammenities and comforts; generally the Caribe is the most affordable and the Palace is the luxury end. We certainly enjoyed our recent stay at the Palace Las Americas. The staff and service at the Riu Palace are second to none in Cancun. This is an all-inclussive resort, and the food was good at all the restuarants, including the main dining hall. The alcohol call brands are top shelf and perhaps more familar to US travelers than the liabations offered at the other Riu resorts. The Palace is beach front (all 3 Rius are beach front in Cancun) and has one of the best north-facing calm clear water coves in all of Mexico! If you are planning a trip to any RIU property, be sure to join the RIU Class (Hotel frequent stayer club program) before checking in to get credit for your first stay.

Great Deal
GPS Aug 24, 2009
The overall experience was great. The staff was amazing. The food, overall, was good and there's something for everyone's ... taste in the buffet on a daily basis. The pool was beautiful overlooking the beach and fun activities if you wanted to partake in them. The hotel is clean and the air conditioner worked the whole time. No "hidden costs", if you didn't want to spend another dollar you didn't need to. Some things to note: Make sure that men bring a long pair of pants for the "fancier" dinner reservations. They gave my husband a hard time because he didn't bring any but they had some at the front desk to borrow. As another reviewer commented, bring single dollar bills to tip here and there and you will be treated like a king. The staff, cab drivers, etc...are SUPER appreciative and you get greater attention from them for a couple of dollars. The food was good but the "high" end restaurants are not what I think are high end. But, nonethelesss, the food is good and the drinks are fine (but if you like them strong-ask for a shot on the side to add to your drinks...they make them pretty weak.) The room was kept very clean but it is not a 5 star room. No flat screen tv, tub is tiny and the bed in the room is my biggest complaint. It is rock hard. I literally woke up with a sore hip from sleeping on my side. And the sheets are paper thin. But, it was fine and we were hardly ever in the room. But, for the price you can't beat it. And the overall experience is still tremendous!

The Isla Mujeres day trip for $75 with the Albatros group that the Mayaland Tours offers is so worth it. Large Catamaran with no more than 12 people on it, fun crew, drinks flowing, snorkeling, para-swing activity, shopping on the island, and lunch included. This was so much fun for the day and it doesnt' start too early, around 10am. The boat felt like it was my private sailing boat for the day. So worth it!
