Great experience

Surprisingly good foods in the international buffer; great pool view and beach; the only complaint is the dampness in the room even with air conditioning on all day.

Hotel was Incredible

We loved the facilities at the RIU palace. It was a lot nicer than it's sister property next door. The lunch and dinner buffets left much to be desired but the breakfast was decent. The hotel tends to cater to the European crowd which is fine, but I was looking for more of my southern breakfast foods. Beautiful beach and location though. When you are looking out you can't see any other hotels, only Isla Mujeres across the way. Highly recommend upgrading to an ocean view room. Definately book reservations for the specialty restaurants at the table by the front desk. The Italian is good but only open for lunch, no res. required, the only other one that we ate at was the Brazilian and it was pretty good. The specialty restaurants are really the only decent food at the resort. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. Everyone speaks English and it is within walking distance to Senor Frogs, Carlos N Charlies, Hard Rock Cafe and many shopping areas. The room was nice and the bathroom had 2 sinks and bathtub/shower combo. We loved the turndown service at night; it was a nice touch

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

There is shopping, a large souvenier store, Hard Rock Cafe, Starbucks, drugstores, McDonalds, Carl's Jr, Coco Bongo nightclub, Carlos N Charlies are all within walking distance. Don't take a cab, it really is a short walk to get to anything you want to do

Family accommodating, not family- friendly.

If you want to enjoy this place, please go when you know the weather is great. The only fun things to do require you to be outside on the beach or pool. They don't have indoor pools or heated pools. They have a jacuzzi inside the spa but young children are not allowed. When we went, which was for 6 days, we only had 3 days of sun. (And even then, it wasn't that warm). My 2 year old spent most of her time in the bathtub with her beach toys. That being said, the staff were incredibly friendly and kind. Very eager to help and please. We were very pleased with them. Decor was classic, not the most modern but very beautiful, well- maintained and clean. The rooms were large and comfortable. Also, bring your own toothpaste!! We had to pay an arm and a leg for it. Food was pretty good. Room service food selection was very limited and there are no snacks in the minibar. They have tons of drinks in it though. The special restaurants that required dinner reservations were not that great. Our favorites were Mexican & steak, (the rest were subpar- Japanese & fusion in particular were not too good) the general buffet restaurant had a nice selection of foods. We ended up goin there most of the time. All in all, we had a great time despite the weather. My ratings are based on having a small child around. But if we didnt have to consider her, then we probably would've rated higher. **Also 3 standup employees were Eric at the front desk, Alexis (male waiter) and Rebecca (female waiter). They were warm, inviting and very accommodating. 5 stars for each of them!

Paradise

Service was exceptional. Visited the pool everyday! It was our honeymoon, so we had a couples massage - well worth the money! The first room they gave us had 2 twin beds pushed together and they called it a king. We went back to the desk and asked for a room change and they happily moved us. The food was better than average, the fusion resaurtant was the best, the steakhouse not so much.

RPLA was amazing!

The RPLA was amazing! The hotel has a Victorian inspired theme which is NOT characteristic of being in Mexico but certainly does give 5 star class and elegance. The staff was VERY friendly and helpful from check in until check out. We paid a little more for an Ocean/Sea view suite and it was well worth the money. If you need more water/beers(dos equis)/ soda (pepsi products) just stop by the front desk and ask- they will fill you up. The "quiet" pool is not quiet it is more a kids pool and the "activity" pool has games all day and more of an adult atmosphere. This hotel is certainly not for party people- we were on our honeymoon and noted that most of the people staying there were older people (couples and groups) and honeymooners like us. We spoke with a cab driver that said the RPLA and Riu Cancun have the best beaches in Cancun- this is true. Other hotel's beaches have been washed away and the RPLA beach was big. You can take out snorkeling gear for an hour at a time (although the gear is not very good but it is free!) and you can rent kayaks ($2 p/p) which is fun for a bit but you can not leave the hotel area so you can not go very far. Overall our experience was awesome! I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to a friend!

Good value in a great place

The hotel is lovely, but poorly planned (at least for December) as the hotel blocks the sun completely by 3pm. The food is quite good, with an extensive buffet and several different themed restaurants, however getting reservations at the restaurants is difficult as there are only two nightly seatings and each is not for very many guests. Most guests therefore have to eat at the buffet for all meals. The wait staff is truly superior and gracious, the alcoholic drinks are quite good. The beach is beautiful (but no sun after 3pm) and the pools also (but no sun after 2pm for the pools). There is an adequate number of lawn chairs. The rooms are all at least junior suites and very spacious, but the air conditioner did not extract the humidity and so all clothes and papers seemed damp after a few days. Some cleaning product used on the floors in the suite made it very slippery which was not good. Maids and waitstaff were wonderful.
