Money was stolen from my room!!!
unhappy guest Dec 14, 2009
I had my cash stolen from my hotel room!!! It was inside of my suitcase inside of my wallet!! I booked a day trip with the ... hotel so the staff knew I'd be out of the room all day. I had the money in the morning and it was gone at night. Someone from the cleaning staff or the people that fill up the mini bar definitely took it. The security manager said that the hotel has no responsibility for anything outside of the safe in the room! Completely ruined my vacation!

Kak Dec 7, 2009
We have stayed at a Riu resorts but this was our first stay at the Riu Cancun. It was a very nice hotel, the staff was great ... and the food was awesome!! The hotel is in a good location however, the beach was on the east side of the hotel so this time of year the sun went behind the building fairly early. This just means you had to chase the sun a little after about 3:30pm. If I had to find something to complain about it would be the bed. The mattress was very hard & the pillows were pretty flat. I didn't complain but I'm sure if I had - the staff would have found some way to resolve.

Where is the Beef?
Dom Dec 5, 2009
Mexico is our favorite destination, this was the the 2nd time in Cancun;12 other times in Riviera Maya. Property may look ... impressive from an external perspective, unfortunately it falls very short on some Key Expectations. Unless one is a business traveler, there is little to enjoy in this Hotel. The staff, I must say, really do their best to please you, and even the front desk is attentive with the follow-ups. The beach stretches pretty wide but only 20ft x 80ft is really usable; the balance is occupied by the Volley field or is continuously washed out by the even smallest waves. Thumbs down for the beach and the pools where the sun shows up at 8:30 and disappears at 2pm due to the towering hight of the Hotel. With it, half of your vacation also disappears. At meal time in the Main-Buffet, you'll find decent food presentation but mediocre quality. Fruits, with the exception of Cantaloupe, are usually not ripe therefore not sweet, woody and sour pineapples, or mostly tasteless; breads, danishes and all Desserts made with flower, no exceptions, taste absolutely stale; no fresh fish;frozen only and not accurately tawed because it punctually tastes like ammonia which is used to flash-freeze it on the ships. Meat is the only enjoyable main dish you'll find once you add salt. As for meat choices, don't hold your breath. The Steakhouse menu is very unimpressive and so is the dining experience. At the bars, Beer is always great while choice and quality of liquors is very poor. If you enjoy shopping, you are near everything and that is, seriously, the only reason why one would want to stay at the Riu Cancun (or Palace). Hardly, a good reason for a vacation spot.

We were a little disappointed in the hotel itself. For a hotel that is only a few years old, it looks pretty worn down. The ... rooms weren't great-there was no AC unit in the room so whatever the hotel set the temperature at is what you were stuck with. There was mold in the shower and the knob which switches the bath faucet to the shower faucet broke off so we had to use a washcloth every time to pull this tiny little screw up to turn on the shower. We had mixed experiences with the staff. Some were super helpful and friendly while others were unaccomodating. The entertainment staff was great! They provided fun activities during the day and made the nightly shows enjoyable and engaging. The food/buffet was pretty good. Get there early for the best/freshest selection. If you want to make a reservation for one of the restaurants-you should do so TWO days in advance. The reservation restaurants were just okay. The pools were great- the beach was a bit destroyed by the hurricanes. Many rocks had been pushed onto the shoreline which made the beach area small and impossible to take a long walk on the beach. The hotel is in walking distance to touristy bars such as Daddy-o's and Coco Bongo. I was only with one other girl so we didn't want to risk walking alone-although staff says it's safe, there are definitely some sketchy areas. All in all- we got what we paid for. We got a great deal and we weren't 100% happy with the hotel but still had a great time!

Hurricane IDA
Jay Dec 1, 2009
The hotel was great from the moment we were greeted at the door... Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Only issue we had ... was that the beach was very rocky and we got pretty cut up while swimming in the ocean.. We happened to be there as hurricane Ida passed through the area and were stuck in the hotel most of the trip. The sports bar upstairs was a blast. One word of advice... Do not book bar tours from the web. Book them from the hotel while you are there.. I booked a tour from online websites for everyday we were there and they were scams.. My credit card reimbursed me but it was still a hassle.. Hotel offers a different nightly trip every night. I would definitely go back with friends but this is not really a hotel for couples or people that are going to spend a lot of time in their rooms.. Beds were extremely uncomfortable. Also make sure to book reservations at the restaurants early because we had troubles with them filling up

Great location, but not as advertised
pola Nov 30, 2009
I will start off with the good points of this hotel. The main one being its location, if you want to be close to everything ... this is perfect. We were able to walk to the clubs and it literally took us about 10minutes. The hotel is beautiful, we had a suite on the 6th floor with great views of the ocean. Now I will cover the bad points. First of all before booking this hotel I read a lot of reviews and went over all of the hotel information. First, according to the hotel information there are 4 restaurants and a Sports Bar that has food/drinks 24 hours. The truth is that there is 1 buffet style restaurant and as for the Sports Bar the food that is available is cold burgers and hotdogs that is left on trays at all times. The hotel tells you that there are 4 restaurants that you must make reservations in advance. Here is where the hotel is very deceptive. We arrived at around 12pm and were given a rundown of all of the restaurants and we went over to make our reservations. As we waited in line I heard the reservation clerk telling the guests in line that there were no reservations available for any of the 4 restaurants until Sunday. When we went to make our reservations we were told the same thing that all restaurants were booked to capacity, we explained to the lady that we were leaving on Monday and that it seemed ridiculous that we could not get a reservation until Sunday. The overall attitude of the staff was just to brush you off and say "oh you need to speak with so and so" instead of addressing the problem. I asked several of the staff if the hotel was full and they all answered that the hotel was at less than 50% capacity. In my opinion the hotel does not want you to take advantage of the 4 restaurants and lies about not having any reservations available. This was confirmed when we went to our dinner that we were able to reserve for Sunday and the place we were told was booked to capacity was only half full. If you have traveled to Mexico and are used to the great service, this is going to be a shock for you. The service is not personal and you get the feeling that no one really cares whether you are satisfied at this hotel.

I've been to lots of hotels and this was not a 5 star. A solid 4 star though, with it's good points and it's bad points. ... The lobby does have a 5 star feel to it, but parts of the hotel are barely 3 star. The pool was 5 star with plenty of different pools to relax, party or a little of both. The beach was down right small, but they did have a netted area for swimming and snorkeling etc came with the package. The rooms were barely 3 star and a LOT of stuff just didn't work...the beds were very uncomfortable. Mini bar and alcohol was rarely refilled...our vodka was empty when we got there and wasn't filled the entire 7 days. I broke a table on accident and had to pay $227...that's what they have insurance for? The breakfast and lunch buffets were very good and the various restaurants were even better. Location is very close to Cocoa Bongo and most of the tourist clubs, with some shopping directly across the street. The disco inside the hotel isn't really worth your time.
