I've been to lots of hotels and this was not a 5 star. A solid 4 star though, with it's good points and it's bad points. ... The lobby does have a 5 star feel to it, but parts of the hotel are barely 3 star. The pool was 5 star with plenty of different pools to relax, party or a little of both. The beach was down right small, but they did have a netted area for swimming and snorkeling etc came with the package. The rooms were barely 3 star and a LOT of stuff just didn't work...the beds were very uncomfortable. Mini bar and alcohol was rarely refilled...our vodka was empty when we got there and wasn't filled the entire 7 days. I broke a table on accident and had to pay $227...that's what they have insurance for? The breakfast and lunch buffets were very good and the various restaurants were even better. Location is very close to Cocoa Bongo and most of the tourist clubs, with some shopping directly across the street. The disco inside the hotel isn't really worth your time.

Nice resort! Many activities if you choose to do them. We chose to sit by the beach, scuba, snorkel and took a trip to Isla ... Mujeres. On that island we drove golf carts but you could drive mopeds. Buffet food was good and the three restaurants were enjoyable.

One of the Best Hotel Ever Stayed
Nepenthe Oct 26, 2009
You just can not beat the location of Riu Cancun. A shopping mall is right across the street from the hotel lobby. Walking ... distance to Forum by the Sea, another shopping center. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The food is fantastic. Free entertainment every night. Free Wi-Fi in the hotel lobby. Everything is included: food, drink, minibar in the room... Great view of Carribean Sea from every hotel room. The bed is a bit hard though. Strongly recommend it to everyone.

Don Juan is the only restaurant that does not require a reservation. If you want to try the three speciaty restaurants, you need to make a reservation as early as possible. Kawachi is the least popular one and you can get the same day reservation. For the other two, you need to make reservation at least one day in advance.

We had a wonderful time, the resort is 98% perfect. Only minor complaints were the rooms never cooled down totally, humidity ... caused them to be muggy. Other than that it was a fabulous vacation and well worth the money!!! Check in was super slow, but we did arrive on a Saturday. Entertainment not good, accept Michael Jackson Show it was great.

RCin Huntersville Oct 19, 2009
We were first at the RIU Cancun about 5 years ago when it first opened. We had a great experience then and they are still ... doing it right. Our room was great, the facility is wonderful, and the staff is very congenial. Until they change from that, we'll always stay there. We can't imagine anyone else doing it better, especially at the same price.

long overdue vacationer Oct 11, 2009
This was our first experience with going out of the country and our first week long vacation together since we have been ... married (27 years). This was something we were looking very much forward to and were a little nervous about leaving the country but it was WONDERFUL. We did not encounter any major problems and our flight & hotel experience was great. [...] The hotel was so pretty and the surrounding were nice. Everything we needed was right there. My husband enjoyed the choices of food more than I did. I am a pretty picky eater but the food was still good and we never went hungry. (Food & drinks 24 hours a day)We had a Junior suite and our room and ocean view balcony was very large. We were very pleased with it all and didn't want to leave. We would definately stay there again [...]

The hotel is nice, the food good, the rooms are ok but don't have internet and is very uncomforted because if you need to ... connect to internet you have to go to the lobby. The gym doesn't have weights only machines and is very noise, the music is so laud. The swimming pools are beautiful but the hotel has only one quiet but has a big inconvenient in the afternoon doesn't get sun, the rest of the pools are noisy, music very laud and many games. .

Riu Cancun
Kaye Oct 10, 2009
The RIU Cancun is in a perfect location in the Cancun Hotel Zone. It is convenient to everything. The staff was very ... friendly and attentive. They did their best to keep the Resort spotless. The buffet had a large selection and it was impossible to not find something that you liked to eat. The pool selection was awesome. They had one for everyone's taste (quiet, activity, children, swim up bar, etc.) There was also tons of loungers at the beach. It would have been a perfect stay if they had drink service at the pools and beach. The Orbitz rep on site was very helpful with scheduling tours. We toured Chichen Itza and it was an interesting tour. The only two issues with the tour was the three hour drive to get there and the hassle from the vendors trying to sell their wares during the guided tour. No one can help the three hour drive but the vendors at the site should not be allowed to interupt the guided tour because you cannot properly listen to the historical information provided by the guide due to the constant and insistent interuptions by the vendors. They should patiently wait for the tourist to come by their areas during the free exploration time that is provided after the guided tour.

All the clubs are within a short walk from the hotel. Go out with the hotel staff for $40-$60/night which includes cover and drinks and a "VIP" area. Not a drinker... just go to the club area and there will not be a shortage of people trying to sell you wristbands to get you in. You might be able to bargain them down. Also free Wi-Fi across the street at the local Starbucks if you have your laptop. It's expensive at the hotel.
