I Will Not Return

Where do I begin? I visited the GR Solaris from 12/6/12-12/10/12 for a friends bday. It was NOT at all what I expected. The food was horrible (pics attached), the service was atrocious, and my sheets were dirty! When you walk into the hotel for the first time it seems great with the wonderful view of the beach. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse. 1. They make it seem like there are many different dining options but fail to mention that only 1 or two places are open at a time. This means you really don’t have much to choose from. 2. The food is by far the worst I’ve ever had at a hotel. On the 1st night we attempted to eat at the buffet but had to leave because it was so bad. We then tried the deli but that was inedible as well. I mean, really, how do you mess up a turkey sandwich?!? We had to leave the property to find food worth eating. The only saving grace is breakfast. While it was far from gourmet, it was at least edible. 3. The service was not good. AT ALL. The employees at the front desk act as though you are bothering them when asking for basic things, i.e. extra blankets, someone to come up and change your DIRTY sheets, etc. One morning we asked the concierge to make dinner reservations at an off-site restaurant. We were late for a tour so asked her to leave word with the front desk as to whether the reservation was made and for what time. Upon our return, we learned that no note was left. We asked the front desk to call the restaurant to check and we were told NO. We would have to call from our room. Of course, that was so that they could charge us the connection fee for local calls. We went to the concierge on duty and he said he knows nothing about what the other concierge does. ā€œThat’s a different departmentā€. Multiple concierge departments in one hotel? Really? We then asked him to make us reservations and he told us that his phone doesn’t work. That his job is only to tell people about the all inclusive program. No one was willing to help us by placing a simple phone call. While there is a lot to complain about at this horrible establishment, there were two employees that were absolutely wonderful and they must be acknowledged. George from the travel desk was absolutely amazing. We booked our tours through him and enjoyed every single one of them. He went out of his way to ensure that we got what we needed. Ray must also be acknowledged. He helped us find the best parties, gave us great restaurant recommendations and was nothing but pleasant each time we saw him. Overall, it was a bad experience. I will never return to this hotel or visit any of its affiliates.

Our first getaway to Cancun (Wife and I)

The hotel location is very close to the airport, about only a 10 minute drive. It has a great spot on the beach, with beautiful water and fun waves to play in. The staff is amazing!!! They are always smiling, always friendly, and quick to any requests made. The staff really made our stay very enjoyable, and because it was so great, we won't be looking at any other hotels when we go back. The hotel is very nice as well. Its not a 5 star looking hotel, but for as cheap as the stay is, it is nice. Rooms were very clean and pretty comfortable. Every night there are shows inside the hotel, which we went to all of them, and enjoyed them all. My wife and I did spend a lot of money while on the trip, but that is only because we wanted to have an adventurous time. We did the Jungle Adventure tour, Isla Mujeres tour (HIGHLY RECOMMEND, especially the golf cart tour), and the Salvatica zip-line jungle tour (Also very very fun). With that said, if we didn't do any of these tours, we probably would have spent only a $100 for the entire 6 days we were there on tips. They say tips are included, but most of the staff makes on average $5 USD a day, and for as hard as they work, we felt it necessary to tip, since the service was outstanding. On to our complaints now. The food is not the best. It is hit or miss to be honest. There is always a place to eat no matter what time of day for free. You can reserve a fancy dinner every morning if you please, with better food, which I recommend doing, because they fill up fast. Without a reservation made at 8am in the morning, you can't get in. This is still free by the way, unless you want a steak or lobster. But regardless, the food isn't the best, but for an all inclusive at a great price, we can't complain. The only other complaint my wife and I had was we felt the drinks were watered down. We are not heavy drinkers, two beers will get us drunk, but there we literally drank from 11am til 2am and only got slightly tipsy. I personally feel the tequila is the only liquor not watered down. Food and drinks were not the best, but the staff, location, and value made up for them easily. We will definitely be going back again!

Make a reservation, in person, at 8am every morning so you can eat at the Marco Polo restaurante. If you prefer the buffet selection at dinner time over a sit down meal, you can always cancel the reservation at no cost.

Good family oriented hotel

We just came back after 1 week in the GR Solaris, 2 adults, one 4 year old and one 1 year old. We had a great time, I won't claim this to be a perfect hotel, but it was really good for our needs. Nice pools, nice beach, nice kids club, engaging entertainment stuff. The nightly shows are great and I recommend those to everybody. Restaurants are just ok, I would skip the Marco Polo altogether, not worth it. Breakfast was good and dinner at the Rosmarinus was usually good specially the grill and fish nights. I would highly recommend this hotel for families, super-picky people may want to check elsewhere :)

A guy in the conceirge is very rude. Food is so so. But, entertainment staffs are great, so fun. Friday magic show is great, too. But, I would not come back to this hotel. One stay is enough.

No need to leave the hotel!

I would go back to the GR Solaris in a minute. We had all we needed to have a great time at the hotel. In fact, we only left one day out of our five day stay. The food, shows, staff, and location was all we could expect from a 4 star hotel. We look forward to going next year....sooner if possible!!

A great getaway for anybodu

The staff treated us with royalty that made us feel more welcomed. We were brought drinks before we checked into our room. Even the bagboy brought our bags at the same time we walked into the room. Everything was there, but they did not replenish the refridgerator when it was emptied the next day. They could do that the same time the room was bing made up.

Great Place to Relax

We had a lovely but brief stay at GR Solaris. We found the rooms to be very clean and very comfortable. They could use a bit of updating or I would have given them a 5. We had an Oceanview room with a the small balcony and it was wonderful to leave the door open and hear the waves and feel the breezes. It was a bit noisy one night as the pool area below was busy and full of happy travelers who didn't go to bed as early as we do. The food was of good quality and abundance. Lots of choices, some not my personal taste but we always found good dishes to try. We found the guests at this hotel to be very international so the variety of choices provided something for everyone. The location is a little bit remote but that lent itself to a more relaxing and less hectic atmosphere. We caught the local bus right outside the hotel and it took you anywhere you wanted to go, dining or shopping, for $1 USD. The facility was very well kept and the entertainment was fun and enthusiastic. I would definitely return again and found many of the people there go every year.

Don't pay for the hotel transfer. It was expensive and the hotel is only about 15 mins from the airport. It took forever for us to get from the airport to the hotel because we had to wait for several other people and they were very busy trying to sell us excursions and timeshare opportunities.

Not So Great

The number one concern at the GR Solaris is to sell you a Time Share. We were told by the Concierge, (Betty) that we were invited to a 25th Anniversary celebration. We were specifically told that no one would try to sell us a Time Share. Lo and behold, it was nothing but an attempt to sell Time Shares. When I inquired about it I was told, "C'mon, what did you think it was?". One more thing to watch out for: BEES. The outdoor snack bar has a lot of exposed sugar from the Coke and Sprite in the soda fountain, and I was stung twice. I'm not allergic to bee stings but if I were, I'd be VERY VERY cautious about this place.
