It was great but i'm not that picky

It was our first trip to Cancun and we were not disapointed but also didn't know what to expect. We have nothing to compare ... it to but we loved our time at the GR Solaris. I know that they are aupposed to be friendly cuz that's the whole deal but they really were so friendly. Everyone says hello and good morning and good night. We felt very at ease and pretty much got everything we wanted out of this trip. The weather could have been a bit better but that's not anyone's fault. We dreaded our last day. You hate when one day ends cuz that's just one day closer to leaving. The food was not overly impressive but it was readily available at any time. Also, the beach was a little rough and rocky but Hurricane Ida had just gone through and uncovered some of the rockiness which was kind of a bummer. Sucks to get thrown into a rock by a wave. One last thing, why only 3 beers in my fridge a day? If i want more it should be restocked whenever I want. It's all inclusive baby!

The resort was very nice, the staff was awesome; very friendly and entertaining. Unfortunately, hurricane Ida came rolling ... by when we were there, so it rained everyday. Even being stuck inside the hotel most of the time, it was still a fun time. Drinks were strong and delicious (we left $1 tips randomly)and the staff did their best to keep all of us entertained with games and shows. I would definitely go back (and pray for sun next time)!

Hotel was pretty nice, however needs some improvement. Hotel restaurant choices were limited. Food wasn't the best. Only ... one indoor bar, and two outdoor bars. Pool area and staff were nice. Not within walking distance to much of anything. If you want to go to town, you'll need to take a taxi or the bus. Probably wouldn't go back.

Consider elsewhere

This truly isn't a "bad" hotel but the pics and reviews talk this place up much higher than it actually is. If you want an ... OK price at a clean/functional hotel (not resort) this may good for you. Here's what you won't get (and it may not even matter to most travelers). Gym = reminds me of a little apartment gym. Spa = small. Hotel grounds = small with no real "grounds" to speak of. Very plain. Staff: friendly enough but not engaging or truly looking to go out of their way. It lacks all the little things that seperate a hotel from a resort--no frills. Better analogy is flying first class and coach lol. Located closer to airport but far from downtown. Bus is easy enough though. Drinks were good although one bartender at the only bar open at night makes for long lines. Found that suprising but every night just the one guy. *** Bring/buy a large mug and fill up versus filling your dinky 6oz glass over and over***. Outside bars (when open)also waaaaay understaffed. Beds very firm--I happen to like that but my wife not so much. Food--average. Go out and eat--I found the best seafood place I've ever come across--anywhere. Pre-paid transportation back to the hotel stood us up at 4:30am and would not answer any calls--BEWARE. Again, hotel staff apathetic, nice but could really care less. Rooms = nice and clean. My advice: if you can truly spare to spend an extra 40-50 a night, there are some MUCH better resorts to stay in. Trust me, it would be worth your money. Check the beach status (some beaches too rocky), check what excursions you can get thrown in for staying with them. And read honest reviews.

Great spot for a fun vacation
Esteban Oct 18, 2009
This hotel was a better than average all inclusive hotel. Location is just great. We spent the bulk of our trip by the ... pool and chose to avoid the sales pitches for all the side trips. I think if you work a little bit you can make your own side trips. The bus line runs up and down the strip to the tourist areas (and beyond) and is cheap and easy to use. You can also find ways the locals travel to Isla Mujeres without paying $80 for a party boat. There's a Mayan ruin (Ruinas El Rey) within walking distance (1/4 mile) of this hotel, it took about an hour and a half to go and explore and we were in the pool cooling off before 11 a.m. I've read other reviews complaining about the beds being hard but we didn't find it bad. The staff works incredibly long and hard hours, the entertainment staff has great fun and interacts with everyone. We laughed long and hard the whole time we were there, and met some great people! Food selections are ample but remember you are eating buffet food prepared in large quantities. Take advantage of the prepared to order (breakfast omelettes, fajitas) options available at mealtime. The "high end" restaurant still isn't that high end, but you are getting a great deal. Have another tequila and it gets better.

Wonderful Honeymoon
Frank and Pattie Oct 12, 2009
We owe our wonderful Honeymoon to the GR Solaris. All inclusive was such a money saver for us. Staff was wonderful, and ... very appreciative when you tipped, so it was actually a pleasure to fork over a few bucks and make someones day. The food was great, from the HUGE breakfast buffet, to the snacks on the beach, to elegant dinners at Marco Polo, and A+ service. The spa experience was so relaxing, best massage I've ever had, and they make you feel very comfortable. The hotel itself was beautiful, and absolutly immaculate. The only gripe we had about the hotel was the steep walk up the driveway after a long night of drinking lol. We love this hotel, we love the staff, we'll be back next year.

Puerto Madero was absolutly the best restaurant in Cancun. Just a few minutes away by bus on the Lagoon side. The surf and turf was amazing, and the lobster tail was HUGE. They serve really large portions, so if you decide to order side dishes, be prepared to take some home. We also recommend the provoletta as an appetizer, flame grilled thick slice of provolone cheese, delicious. Another restaurant we recommend is LaMadonna in the La Isla mall. Great food, and the most breathtaking restaurant we've ever seen. Take the buses, 3 dollar round trip anywhere you want to go, the taxis could cost you 10 to 12 dollars each way. Chichen Itza, or chicken pizza as I called it was fun, but a really long day, and really tiring.

We rested-played games in the pool and visited the night clubs. It was our second visit to Cancun and we really enjoyed the ... trip. There were shows every night and they were very very good entertainment!! The only downsides- the food was good but not alot of variety. It was a bit of a bus ride to get to the clubs. We would certianly return to this resort-already thinking about a late spring trip!!

Nicole Oct 2, 2009
Hotel was very nice. Upgrade to an ocean view room it is definately worth the money, room was extremely clean and was ... cleaned everyday. Pool was the best place to be during the day, there were always things going on with the entertainment staff (they made the pool area fun). Alot of fun people at this resort! The shows at night were hillarious, definately go to the shows. The drinks were very good for an all inclusive, they will use good alcohol if you tell them what you want (they have it all). They were not watered down at all and just let them now and if they are too weak for you. The Food was the worst part for us, it was not good. You really have to find what to eat and what not too eat. If they improved the food this place would be perfect. My boyfriend and I got VERY VERY sick when we got home, we think it was the bacteria in the food as we didn't drink the water. That is my only complaint. We would not go back due to how sick we got but it was a wonderful vacation and we met alot of nice friends.

This hotel was very comfortable and the staff was very friendly and helpful. As buffet food goes, the quality was acceptable ... and the variety was good. Drinks are made from lower quality spirits but if you ask, they have better quality vodka and tequila "hidden" below the bar. Rooms were comfortable and the refrigerator stocked daily with beer, water and soft drinks is a nice feature. Unlike some of the other hotels who lost their beach in last year's hurricane, the GR Solaris has a lovely stretch of beach with lounge chairs and bar service provided. Use the local buses for transportation around Cancun - it's convenient (many stops) and cheap (about 60 cents per person). Book your transportation from the airport to the hotel before you arrive as it is very expensive to arrange once you are at the airport (a private taxi for 2 from the airport cost $60 - 15 minute ride) The only negative (and it's very minor) was the reservation process for the only sit down restaurant on premises. On the first day, it was "sold out" by 2 pm even though the hotel was not very crowded. I was 5 minutes (no exaggeration) late for my reservation on the second day and they said they had no room for me because I was late. So my tip is make your reservation early and don't be late!

The Jungle Tour (provider: Aqua World) arranged through the hotel staff was a good value at $61 per person. It included a 45 minute snorkel tour and two 20-30 minute jet ski rides (to and from the reef). Very fun and just a short bus ride away.

Nice Beach, Okay Resort, Bad Resort Food
Gigi Sep 7, 2009
Overall, the hotel was okay. The rooms were very simple, but comfortable. We were hoping for a more "plush" experience, but ... we got a standard hotel room. A nice upgrade, given to us at check-in, was that they gave us an ocean view (versus a lagoon view) room. The kind size bed was fine. If you think a hotel room is just for sleeping, then this place is perfect. If you want a hotel room that concentrates on being above average, detailed, etc., you need to look elsewhere. The gray line transportation we purchased with the Orbitz package was nice...a Mercedes Benz to the hotel (in their C-Class model) and a Jetta on the way back. Not bad. The food at the buffets (breakfast, lunch and dinner) were bad. The food looked picked over, the waffles were hard as rocks, and the bacon was nasty. The snack bar by the pool had old looking pizza, nasty looking hot dogs. The chicken nuggets (I thought they might be safe) were oily and dark meat. The Marco Polo Restaurant was good...and it's where we ate every night (reservation required). The liquor at this hotel is NOT top shelf. Dos XX, Jack Daniels, Stolichnaya come to mind, but other than that....nothing. Not even Malibu Rum. The pool area is okay. It's kind of loud and obnoxious, but there is a Relaxation/Adults only Pool around the corner that stayed nice and quiet. We snuck in to the Hilton Hotel pool...THAT is a nice pool...Infinity edge...smooth plastering (not the river rock pool plastering job at the GR which can screw up your feet). But, the beach at the GR is better than the beach at the Hilton (Hilton beach has rocks...lots of them.) So, it's a trade off. We didn't have an awful time. It was nice. It was okay. But, we probably won't stay here again.

This hotel was a bargain, service and employees were the best i've seen, the hotel was very clean. It's true the main pool ... got a little oily late in the day, but we hardly had time to use it. the ocean is where we spent most of the day. If you ask the lifeguard to get you an umbrella ($2.00 tip helps) to get protection from the sun, it is well worth it. The hotel and the rooms were very clean. Had a problem with the safe and called the desk, with in five minutes security showed up and the problem was fixed. All it takes is two dollars a day and the room is transformed with towel animals, bedding , and curtains are nicely decorated and if you leave the doors open of course the air conditioning won't work, otherwise it worked great. We met some very friendly people which was a great plus. This resort certainly met all of our expectations!

The Canadian girl that greets you, [...], is the reason the hotel is what it is, Im pretty sure! The staff is friendly and ... the pool activities remind me of MTV springbreak with Tequila volleyball and football. The room cleanliness could have been a little better (not bad Im just a clean freak) and the beds are rock hard. I had a facial at the spa and it was great, the gym was a little old school but I got the job done. The food was great at the buffetts and Marco Polo was the best service ever! I'm talking 5 course meals with sorbet and cappuccino's and frangelico, the whole 9 yards. The view and beach were pristine. Watch out for the vendors on the veranda, one of them asked my 8 year old how much money she had in her wallett when she asked him how much a bracelet was.

The only thing I didnt like was the door between the rooms. If you have loud neighbours it sounds like they are in your room. I switched rooms after 3 nights without any problems, but hotel was not fully booked. Overall a great place to stay!

Don't get confuse with the guys at the reception: there are the staff members (they will help you out even protecting you from the time share vacation guys - they want your satisfaction and if they notice you are upset with something they will come forward to help you) and there are the time share vacation guys (they will not push you just be straight saying "I don't want it" that's all - they will not bother you anymore).

Harry's steakhouse. Rivals some of the nicest steakhouses I've been to in the US and carries the same quality of beef and seafood. Expensive but definitely worth going to for the view, food and experience. Make a reservation and ask for a table on the terrace: gorgeous view!

If swimming with the dolphines interests you, go to dolphin discovery on isla mujeres. you actually swim in the ocean with them (gated off) and the island is really beautiful and not crowded. Don't bother with the cruise to the island it takes an hour and costs $50 usd because of open bar and lunch included. Instead there is an express ferry that takes 30min to get there and only costs 30 pesos (Approx $2.50 usd).
