The good and the bad about Dream Cancun
The four of us. Dec 21, 2009
We had a dolphin view room which is great if you don't sleep late. If you like quiet we suggest staying on the ocean side of ... the resort. The instant bank machine charges a 17% fee plus $2.00 to withdraw money. The machine clearly says it only charges $7.50 in pesos. For this reason alone we won't stay at another Dreams. We spent $6000.00 plus on our trip, the 17% fee isn't something I can't afford, it's the principle. We had to use the phone at the check in desk to call our bank in Nebraska so we could tell them to allow our credit card to work in Mexico. The gal at the check in desk said there would be a $5.00 charge for the call which we were fine with. When we checked out they actually charged us $23.00 for the three minute call. Even with the language issue this doesn't make any sense. There are four different places to eat on the resort and the food it very good at all four. The resort itself is very clean. The alcohol is watered down enough you don't have to worry about getting drunk. The staff works hard and most of their pay comes from tips but they don't make you feel obligated. Getting one and five dollar bills for tips is an issue. Make sure you bring plenty from the states. The front desk hardly ever has change smaller than a $20.00. My only other complaint is the how the money machine ripped me off. If it weren't for that, I would try the Dreams resort in Tulum Mexico in March.

If you wait much past 6:15pm to eat expect a 30 to 60 minute wait if the resort is fairly full. Plan accordingly or you will waste a bunch of time.

while we were at the hotel, we spent alot of time around the pool and on the beaches. My daughter had a fantastic experience ... swimming with the dolphins. We went sailing and snorkling, and did a little shopping in the surrounding neighborhood. The hotel had fun activities day and night, including some fun shows at the nightclub next door. My daughter had never been to Cancun before, and this place was a great way to introduce her to the exciting vibration of the city.

This was our first trip of this type (All Inclusive) and the resort exceeded our expectations. The staff was warm and ... friendly and made us feel like part of the family. - - The food was great. We ate most of our meals at the restaurants. The "World Cafe" was good, but it was a buffet and the food was not always fresh. But, why go to a buffet when you have first-class restaurants serving fine meals and great service? Room service was great...the food/coffee was hot and tasty. - We had an ocean view room and loved waking up to a beautiful sunrise each morning. - The Orbits "staff" was also very helpful and worked our excursion plans and travel to and from the airport. I would recommend booking at least the airport transportation and one excursion on line. The rates are good and that is one less thing to worry about. -- We took a trip to Chichen Itza. Totally amazing, but very hot and humid. I recommend it to those interested in history. - The Dreams Resort has an Entertainment Team&They were great and had lots of activities planned each day. Go to them if you want to do any activities (i.e., snorkel, sail, dive&) they can help set things up. - Shopping was also very close to the hotel. With in walking distance is a night club area, mall, and the typical "flea market" that sells shirts, hats, dolls and all the other tourist stuff. However, I recommend going to the Mexican Outlet (also walking distance) where the staff is helpful and the sales pressure is much lower. Overall, this was the best vacation we have been on. We are planning to visit again next year.

Superb Location! Excellent Service!
Noreasters Dec 13, 2009
Best location in Cancun with pristine beach. Walking distance to no-hassle shopping at local malls, exciting night life (Coco ... Bongo, Hogs Breath Saloon and many, many others). Based on what we saw at all the other hotels, this was the biggest beach. Superb service from everyone. Maid service was incredible. We would leave at different times in the morning and come back an hour later and all was neat and clean. Food was good. The buffet food in warmers is typically cold. Everything was lukewarm except made to order. So for breakfast, get a great omelet and delicious fruit, cheese, muffins, yogurts, bagels, juice bar. Outstanding selection. It's easy to overlook the other stuff. Restaurant food was top notch. Highly recommend the Seaside Cafe for lunch and Oceana for dinner. Coco Cafe was heavenly. Espresso, cappucino, lattes all included. Cereal cookies are a sweet treat. Tell Jonathan, we said hi :). Kayaking, scuba, yoga and all other activities are included. Incredible value! Entertainment was good. Enjoyed Monday night football with my toes in the sand, watching a 12 foot screen, outdoors. Complete with snacks (lukewarm) and bar service. All premium liquors included too. Top brands of scotch, Chivas, Johnnie Walker.. very nice. Meticulious landscaping. Generous pools. Lukewarm jacuzzi not a deal breaker. Weather was awesome. Only problem is we got taken at the airport for $40. Watch out for the friendly thieves. They'll ask you want transportation you have, lead you over to a table and give you maps and stuff. Very misleading. It's a timeshare scam! Airport personnel really should make them hawk outside. Did the Zipline with Selvatica. Awesome experience. Be sure to bring towels or buy one for $10. Super souvenir. Also did the Chichen Itza tour. Got talked out of the premium tour (wanted onboard bathroom and drinks included, along with coach bus). Tour guide promised a direct pickup and a savings of $40... liar, liar, pants on fire! 45 minutes after pick up and 3 hotels later we were on our way in a very small bus. Got rooked for $15 for 1 diet coke & 2 lemonades at lunch time. Not good! Great trip in all. Did the Coco Bongo! Best entertainment and open bar. Super value of 4 hours of non-stop entertainment and great drinks.

Unhappy Couple Dec 10, 2009
The pool area was not that large and if it had been busier, would have been horrible. No real beach area...what was there ... was very small. Mattress was hard as a rock and very uncomfortable. Meals in buffet were not very good. Breakfast was the only good meal there. Other restaurants were good but gave you very little food. Drinks were watered down and when you ordered a double, they put it in a larger glass with more mixer...ugh! Gave us a $250 Spa credit that had so many restrictions that we just did not use it. It was totally useless as far as we were concerned. Servers and bartenders were great and the best part of the trip. Hotel did allow "hospitality" to hound us about tours which was very annoying. Had to ask them to stop calling our room.

Great Family Vacation
The Traveling Family Dec 10, 2009
This was our second trip to Dreams Cancun. The resort was 40% full and everything was wonderful, with the exception of the ... people working for the Grey Line Transportation Service. We had the same problem on our previous trip, with them directing us to the Time Share Salesman. This time we walked directly to the Grey Line Information Window and explained all we wanted was to be transported to the resort and not have to deal with another high pressure salesman. The woman at the window walked us directly to yet another Time Share/Tours Salesman. I know it was not a communication mistake, as my wife is Hispanic and was speaking fluent Spanish. I explained to the salesman all we wanted after a long trip there was to be transported to our resort. He looked at me smiled and continued with his sales pitch. I had to interrupt him and reiterate the same message three times and I finally lost my temper and demanded to be transported. Once we made it to Dreams Cancun we were treated like the Royal Family and we all had a wonderful time. Dreams is smaller than many of the other resorts but they are very personal in the way treat their guests. The resort is clean, well maintained and everything was open, even though they were only 40% full. My wife and I love life and feel "Life is Good," but when we are at Dreams Cancun "Life is perfect" and so was Dreams Cancun.

the location is excellent - right on the point of cancun - so you get the sea on one side and a quieter bay for swimming and ... lounging. close to bus line for a ride into town. seeing the dolphins every day in the lagoon pool was an extra. we have been to cancun/cozumel/pdc several times so we have done most of the tourist sidetrips. we came to relax, and be with family members who met us there. the hotel which we had stayed at before when it was the camino real is one of the oldest properties in the zone but was still nice ... not wonderful, but nice. the food in the buffet was always good...again not wonderful, but there was always something good. the maids took care of the room three times a day, and the restaurant staff was (usually) attentive. drinks were plentiful and good. it was a very slow time for cancun - less than 50% occupancy - which was just fine for us ...no lines,no crowded beach. my son and his girlfriend were a lot more active than we were.. going out at night, dive trip, parasailing, and my brother went on a dive trip in an underground river, a cenote. the video was awesome! the new airport is a breeze compared with years ago. did we enjoy our trip? yes. we did.

Dreams is located at the tip of the Cancun strip giving breathtaking views of the ocean. The best service that I have ever ... experienced in an all-inclusive resort. Outstanding on site restaurants. I recommend the gray line transportation (an option during my online booking) fast, friendly and on time. We took the Albatros sailing tour to the island which also included snorkling. Overall the place was decent, clean, the food was often cold. The rooms were kind of old and damp. The staff is great, but ... the bars need to find a better method for cleaning their glasses. I often saw them just rinse them out and pour another drink, when too busy. Generally I didn't think Cancun was very pleasant but I haven't ever been to Mexico so I can't compare to other places. We felt like we were given the run around every time we left the resort, and even had one taxi driver take us to the wrong place and then want money to take us back where we wanted to be. Way to many pushy tour/timeshare salesmen. We won't go back.

I've been to quite a few all inclusive resorts on the West and East coasts of Mexico and Dreams takes the cake! The ocean ... front rooms are gorgeous. Mini bar with sodas, juice and beer refilled each day or upon request. The restaurants and quality of food were pleasantly surprising. We literally did not have a bad meal in 8 days. And you have the choice of buffet style or sit down restaurants with various types of menus that are still included in the price (Steak house, sushi, seafood etc) There are also various bars located around the property that all have nice views, some with live music at night and top shelf liquor. The service from the waitstaff and barteneders was amazing and they were all very helpful and happy to serve you. Room was clean and decorated nicely. Large bathroom with tile shower. Nice lobby area. Beach area is kept up nicely with plenty of lounge chairs for everyone. And the dolphin lagoon is fun just to sit and watch even if you don't pay for the Dolphinius adventure. We had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dreams to friends or return for another trip.

You can walk to Playa Del Tortuga and catch a ferry to the Isla Morjeras for a day trip. It is a fun, small island with a nice beach, plenty of shopping, zip line tours and a bunch of fun, cool, local restaurants and bars. We rented a scooter for $21 USD for the entire day and drove all the way around the small island stopping for food and cervecas along the way and had a blast. Made for a great (cheap) day trip and was something different than just hanging by the pool all day.

Average food and watered-down drinks. Restaurants had limited hours but wait staff were approachable and friendly. 24-hour room service is provided free of charge for common fast food items.

Check out the jewelry store Sebastian in the mall across from the Riu. Very reasonable prices were marked & the quality is excellent. No pushy sales!

You had the freedom to go into the Jacuzzi all night long and there were two bars open after 10pm.

Take the bus wherever you go. I never felt unsafe for one minute. It is only 7 pesos or .50 cents

Long story short, we attended church on a Sunday that we were there. We met a member who was a tour guide for Chichen Itza and Tulum. We ended up renting a car from Avis at the resort and our guide, met us at the hotel and our little adventure began. We totally lucked out meeting him, because he was able to give us so much information about the ruins and the history in the area. He also took us to a cenote which we swam in, which was awesome. We drove him home in the evening and were able to meet his family, which was very cool. It was a full day, but was one of the highlights of our trip. I would definitely recommend visiting the ruins, make sure to go with a guide though, (they have tours thru the hotel that you can sign up for or if you go to church maybe you'll luck out like we did:) because unless you are a Mayan history buff, you will totally miss out on the history of the people and the symbolism on the ruins. Have fun!!

One tip I must make is to skip the resort restaurants/bars and walk 10 minutes downtown. That is where excellent food and spectacular nightlife is to be had! Senor Frogs had a Halloween party we will never forget! If you are looking to have fun, downtown is the place to go!

Seaside Grill by the private beach is the best on the resort. The filet mignon was excellent for dinner. their lunch menus are very good too. Their bar actually makes better drinks that the other 2 bars by the other beach.

Drive out of the immediate downtown area and head back up towards bubba gumps for better shopping and the plazas.
