rather gross

what a dump. totally underwhelming experience. we just stayed here one night and wouldn't have stayed any longer. overall the hotel was dishonest. for a bit more money we upgraded to the "oceanview" rooms with a kitchenette. before we even got to see the room we had an incredibly long wait at the reception as they couldn't find our reservation or sort out paperwork for us. meanwhile the staff was very aggressive about taking our bags to the room for us which we didn't need any help with as it was only our backpacks and a suitcase but i guess they're eager for tips. after a very long while they finally sorted out a room for us which they took us to but the room looked as if it were already inhabited. there was a large domino's pizza box on the table as soon as we walked in and the bed was unmade, as if that weren't bad enough the room had a so called balcony with absolutely no view as it wasn't even on the first floor but basement level with a large wall blocking any sort of view to the ocean and loud music blaring from the neighboring pool. it looked like a nightmare so i asked to be moved immediately which the reception didn't even apologize for the distress of the room. on of the concierge just rolled his eyes. come on really? we didn't do anything wrong! so the next room they put us in was on the very top floor...and they have no elevators! which they never mentioned. our room had at best a partial view of the ocean. just a very corner end view (about 15%). our real view was of the building directly in front of us and the building to the side under some very loud construction. the rooms you see in the the pictures are absolutely nothing like what they look like in person. oh and the other thing is they don't have free wifi even though it was advertised and they wouldn't give us a late check out! and the absolute worst part of this experience was the room service! i ordered a veggie pizza thinking this would be the least complicated dish they could prepare without messing up and of course i get this cardboard textured pizza with bagged cheese and carrots on it and 10 packets of ketchup! carrots?! carrots?! the saving grace of it was the ketchup! and that's just not right! and then as if that weren't bad enough i knew the gratuity was included on the bill but the guy who ran up the pizza told us he suggested we tip on top of that. who does that?

Beachfront Treat

We had a few extra days in Mexico and decided to stay on the beach in Cancun. We've avoided this in the past, since it's often crowded with a partying crowd. There was a great rate at the Avalon Grand, which is in the middle of the many-Km long Cancun beach, so we gave it a try. The property was beautiful, well maintained, with large rooms/bath and a balcony. There are stairs as you wind through the European styled entry and pool areas, but worth the short walk. A infinity pool at beach-side is beautiful, the hot-tub divine and the property is relaxing (no disco balls, life-sized frog sculptures or oversexed waitresses). Their staff was informative, helpful and very professional. The food was excellent, although we walked across the street to the Flamingo Mall and bought beverages/snacks to keep with our in-room fridge. Avalon has another location (even more intimate) just down the beach (a few properties away) where you can charge to your Avalon Grand room. We had dinner at their restaurant, Avante. Awesome! Arturo, our waiter, was very sweet.

Tacun (Tacos, coffee, ice cream, etc.) is a small place on the same side of the street as Avalon Palace, across from the Flamingo Mall. The best fish tacos we've had in Mexico, with great service and only $2.50 each.

Great for Families, couples, and children.

It was a great location. we were within walking distance of 2 shopping malls and food. the hotel was very clean, and the front desk staff were very kind, and willing to help in any way possible. they provided a pack and play for my daughter to sleep in... our room was a studio right on the ocean. and a view of the pool and beach. you could hear and see the waves crashing in the night- very pretty and romantic... the beach had some seaweed, if thats what you want to call it, but its not much you can do about that i suppose, but it really wasn't that bad at all. the pool was clean, and well kept, the towels were fresh. the only thing bad i suppose was it was really tiring walking around the hotel getting to where you needed to go, because there are no elevators. and there are a lot of stairs, but hey, it gives you a workout- and you're on vacation, no one says you have to walk fast :) enjoy your time there, it really was a treat. :) oh, and they only offer one bottle of free water, the rest as 3 dollars a bottle i believe. - kind of expensive, but you have to do what you have to do, unless you were already going out and could buy your food and water somewhere else.

Dining tip: In Hotel

my husband and i went out to eat at a resturaunt only to find out it would have been cheaper to dine in... i suggest looking at prices first at the hotel, to now if you are getting a good deal for your money. Although we never tasted the burgers in the hotel, so who knows if they were any good. ?? -

Good location, nothing else.

The hotel is in the most wonderful location, I wish the rooms were a bit nicer and the AC unit was outside instead of in the room. The staff was extremely slow to resolve a problem with our room. It was nice for what it was. A room with an ocean view and the windows open was a nice way to spend the night. And for God's sake never forget those stupid keys to the room and the amenities or you'll get charge for a plastic card. Also you need some kind of strange recipt to leave the hotel. For some reason the fact that you are checking out has to be comunitcated by you with an official piece of paper that you cary from the front desk 10 steps away to the front door. Nothing like missing the ferry over a piece of paper that you didn't know you needed to leave the property.

Good 3 Star

This Hotel is great if you are on a budget. It is no longer a place that is all inclusive. We packed our own alcohol and made our own drinks. The food here is OK but not great. The drinks are in line with prices you will find in resaurants. They do help you with your needs and the room was really clean. If you like a layed back atmosphere and hate large crouds then this would be a good bet. This hotel does a great job booking you tables at clubs and the beach was just perfect. Only complaint would be that it is 2012, time to stop charging for internet.

Not a good hotel.

1 I had requested an all inclusive package, that didn't happen, 2 the room was way smaller than advertised. 3 the floor was so slippery I slipped once in the shower and twice in the room. 4 the food was not what I expected, out of the three things that I ordered the pizza was awfull the burger was half decent and the nachos so- so all this for about 65 dollars 5 I attempted to make a couple of phone calls, and none of them connected so I was very surprised that at check out I was charged for dialing a number.
