Enjoy the private beach, located off Akumal Bay, in Riviera Maya
The Akumal Beach Resort is located 55 minutes from Cancun's International Airport and boasts two swimming pools, two tennis courts, three restaurants, three bars, a children's club and theater.  The all-inclusive resort is surrounded by natural beauty. Akumal Beach Resort overlooks more than a mile of white sand beaches and Akuman Bay, known for Caribbean sea turtles. The 241 room-resort is small enough to be personal but large enough to experience many amenities.
Highlights:
  • More than a mile of beach
  • Akumal Beach Resort is located on Akumal Bay, a known sea turtle hangout
  • Snorkeling steps from the resort
Rooms:

The 168 king or double-double rooms at the Akumal Beach Resort have full ocean or garden views. Expect bold colors, such as orange walls and teal blue accents, that mirror the brightness of the Caribbean. The resort is just steps away from the beach and two pools. Air-conditioning, ceiling fan, hair dryer, purified water, TV, telephone and private balcony or terrace are standard amenities.

Features:

The Akumal Bay provides calm, clear water for swimming , snorkeling and spotting sea turtles. The white, sand beaches lend themselves perfectly to sunbathing. Kids at the Akumal Beach Resort enjoy the supervised kids club. Adults have fun in the sun, play volleyball, work on their archery shot or learn a few new dance moves. For health conscious guests, the resort offers yoga classes. At night, sway to the live music at the main bar or enjoy a weekly show or contest in the theater. Kids in the kids club are fed dinner in the main dining rooms so parents can spend time reconnecting or taking a breather.

Summer Camp not a Resort

First: The Akumal beach, with snorkeling, sea turtles, right in front of the hotel was amazing and beautiful. However, the property itself is more like staying at summer camp than staying at a resort. There was a very limited selection of food, the bathroom was not very clean in our room, no bottled water in the room, the pool appeared cloudy and dirty. At several spots on the property (i.e., near the theatre and close to the archery place) there was a strong and continuing smell of sewage. Overall: location and beach cannot be beat -- simply gorgeous. However, for the price, stay at the non-all inclusive hotel next door (Hotel Akumal Caribe) or a condo.

the best beach, the worst room

Akumal beach resort has the best beach, but the worst room. I assumed that there could be some, but could be cleaned. That was wrong! We had changed a room 3 times, some maintenace problem of the room, too smelly isolated bld, eventually settled down for 10days on 3rd floord room. Bed was too hard, bathroom sink leaking -3times maintenance working, still leaking-, shower didn't work properly, waiting 10 mins. we could be patient all those problems, but we couldn't stay there with tons of tiny tiny aunts and big aunts all over the room including in the bed. They spread once for bugs, but we got bites all over the body during our sleep. I have aunts allerge and even my husband was bitten on his butt. every night we couldn't sleep of itching and pain. Terrible terrible stay, but again, the best beach. Also if you expect Gym, we can't call the place a Gym. We escaped the place staying only3 nights, even wanted to check out earlier, but storm got us.

Pretty Bad Resort

There was not a lot to do here. This place was just God- Awful. The rooms were so old and in desperate need of renovation. I could stand in front of the closed door in the room and see day-light coming in from the outside. So, the door was not very secure. The food was just terrible! Variety was NOT their "spice of life". Lastly, this place was just too far from "civilization".

Beautiful location, rock hard beds

First the bad. The rooms were just ok, but the beds..it was like sleeping on pavement.I woke up hurting several times a night, and in the morning... The food was pretty bland and their selections really limited. If you like to eat fish and pasta every day/night then it wouldn't be so bad. The resort was pretty empty and was closing the day we left due to the lack of customer's . (swine flu panic) That was kind of nice, you got to know everyone and never had to wait for a table chair or drink! Bad for them though..it is really sad what the media has done to Mexico's economy. The entertainment staff was the best by far. Always friendly and treated everyone like family, as did the bar staff. The beach is the the reason to go if you like to snorkel! We saw too many fish to count. It was beautiful. A side note: we rented a car through orbitz and bought the insurance thinking we were good. When we arrived we were told that insurance was no good in mexico. We had to buy theirs. So we spent $72 on orbitz insurance for nothing then couldn't reach them to complain while we were down there. There were several couples that had the same complaint.

Love Akumal but changes have occurred

The gift shop was closed the entire time. If anything was needed we had to walk to town, but it is a very short walk. Looks like the economy has really taken it's toll on this little resort. We always love it there.

Loncheria is the best and very inexpensive. There is a restaurant around the corner called Pestcador that was fabulous and the price was just right.

Needs ALLOT of work

Most important was that due to a change in management since we booked [...] on Sept. 29, '09 for Jan. 25, '10, it was announced upon our arrival at the resort that there was NO reservation in our name. This type of "shock treatment" needs to be alleviated immediately.

Unbeatable location for the price

We arrived just in time for [...]. Even with the bad weather the first few day's, the location of AKUMAL BEACH RESORT SAVED OUR TRIP. We Were able to do just about everything we planned. ABR is not for everyone, food is just OK. Rooms need some TLC, the staff works hard to please, but the hotel does not offer much. LOCATION IS THE MAIN THING AT THIS RESORT, and the price is perfect if your on a budget. Perfect for families, or a quiet getaway.

Just OK

Breakfast was the SAME everyday-omelettes, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, etc. was sick of it after the fourth day. No music at the pool, No nightlife (entertainment or show). No specialty restaurant as noted on their website. Rooms were clean and it was very quiet-as there was very few people there and they have a nice beach.

Not so much.

The good bit: Snorkeling is amazing, just dive right in and there's a whole world in that beautiful water. Turtles, rays and a rainbow of fish-just great. The beach is not too shabby either, although the previous reviewers must not be swimmers, because only a small stretch doesn't have rocks when you walk it (making it difficult to walk into the water without falling and scraping a knee or elbow). Overall great beach, white sand, palms, clear water, little palapas, hammocks and plenty of chairs. The bad: the food. Although I was never hungry, some of my friends were. Dinner consistently got worse though out the week-bizzar. I got excited when I saw fish in the buffet-but what a disappointment-wow. BTW- I'm not a picky eater. The fruits where few and not always fresh looking. Breakfast was the best meal because you can get fresh eggs made. When your at an all inclusive, bad food really puts a damper on things. The entertainment staff, if you can call them that, were pretty bad. They were nice enough, but nice doesn't get me excited or anyone else really, and there were plenty of "joiners" at the resort. The rooms-really need to be updated. They are fine and ours had a great view, but...not so great. Yes, the beds are hard (but not enough to complain about it), but the shower and bathroom setup is odd and almost claustrophobic, but if freshly painted might be ok. The clientele is kinda geriatric-which is ok if you fit that category, but we were a bit bored even with the great margaritas. The drinks are great as are the bartenders! The cute beach bar closes at 5pm with a full resort! What a disappointment! Also, this place is off the beaten path, which is not as exciting as it sounds. Playa del Carmen is a $30, 35 min ride. that's the nearest civilization if you want to go out to dinner or for drinks-which we did a lot! I wouldn't return or recommend-maybe a day trip if your in Playa and going to Tulum-stop by to snorkel for sure! Did I mention this was my 6th trip to Mexico?

Hard nights, lazy days..

Beautiful beach and great swimming. The rooms are sub-par, the beds are hard as rock. I injured my fingers because the window didn't work properly in my room; the front desk did nothing about it. The food was just okay. The front desk and the other customer service employees are at best, luke warm and seem unhappy to be working there. The maid service was the most redeeming quality....they were tipped! P.s. Not a friendly environment for lone female travelers...catered to couples and families.
