Ah...Akumal

This was my fourth stay at the Akumal Beach Resort. Nothing fancy, but just right. I'm there for the sun, the sand, the relaxation, and the swimming. The rooms are basic, but clean. Our bed was spacious and comfortable. Service was excellent. Food was simple, but well prepared. I never went hungry. The swimming was excellent. I did have to get out there early, before the tours. The resort is closing in a couple weeks to complete much needed renovations.

Perfect getaway!

This was the perfect hotel and beach resort. The hotel has front beach property with an amazing beach and access to snorkeling. While snorkeling you can see green sea turtles, sting rays, parrot fish, and all those beautiful colored fish. We liked the fact that this is a low key hotel, it is not crowded. The staff is amazing, good food, and entertainment by Alex, Alejandro and Mirna.

Loved Akumal Beach Resort!

My husband and I were looking for a quiet, beachfront, tropical, relaxing vacation as a belated honeymoon and we definitely found it at Akumal Beach Resort! Most of the resort was closed for renovations and while that may scare some people away, it was a huge bonus for us! There were hardly any people there, we had the pool to ourselves most of the time, no problems finding beach chairs, yet there were still people to meet and talk to in the evenings in the main bar. The room had a gorgeous view of the ocean and overlooked the pool. The beach is right in front of the resort, no shuttles or long walks to get anywhere. The rooms, the pool, the restaurant, the main bar, everything is right on the beach. The snorkeling and swimming right out in front of the resort is great! People have complained about the beds and pillows but I thought they were absolutely fine. The rooms are not like American 5-star standards but they are more than sufficient and kept very clean. The AC in the room was lacking. It stayed nice and cool for most of the day and night but they seemed to turn it off around 3am-6am or something and the temperature in the room would be the same as outside. But they are renovating soon. There were activities in the afternoons by the pool and entertainment every evening in the main bar at 9pm. There is snorkeling gear and floating chairs to borrow and the beach towels are nice a big. The staff is very friendly and you get to know them a little throughout the stay because they are always there and available. We also felt that they did a great job quietly behind the scenes taking care of guests to make sure no one drank too much, or got lost or hurt or anything. The dinner buffet was ok. There were always local Mexican food options and mini tres leches cakes that I loved! The pool side snack bar was my favorite food option, open from 12-6, hamburgers, hotdogs, ice cream, chips and guacamole and pico de gallo plus a full bar. Apparently the thing to do is buy or bring a big tumbler or insulated beverage holder and fill it with lemonade or beer or to make iced coffee every morning like I did. Then you are set for the beach! We ended up going out for at least one meal a day because there are also some great restaurants in walking distance. They had shuttle and taxi services available all the time, but we had rented a car so we could venture out to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Xel-Ha etc. Everything was a short drive from the resort. Best snorkeling I've ever done at Yal-Ku and Xel-Ha!! We could not have had a better place for what we were looking for! The day before we left it did fill up with more people, the pool and main bar were noticeably more rowdy. But still nothing compared to the big resorts in Cancun or Playacar. And I suspect once renovations are complete, and the new resort goes in next door, it will never be so quiet again. We really lucked out with our week at Akumal Beach Resort!! It was perfect!

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

Around 10am local resorts start to bring in large groups to snorkel just down the beach where all the turtles are. If you want the best experience get up early and go out before they arrive! Also, well worth the short drive or long walk to Yal-Ku lagoon (small cost to get in) for some awesome snorkeling!

Very pleasant stay in idyllic location

My wife and I first stayed here 6 years ago and always wanted to return. Now that we have, we were surprised and pleased to find the resort has undergone noticeable renovations and upgrades since then. It is not luxurious but extremely comfortable, relaxing and charming. The reef-protected lagoon and beach are the best we have seen in the Yucatan, especially for snorkeling and swimming. The buffet-style main restaurant had an excellent and delicious selection daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Taking the local colectivos that run regularly on the highway (150 meters from the hotel) saves a lot of money on cab fare to go on excursions to places like Xcaret and Playa del Carmen

Relaxing vacation

My wife and I just returned from a very relaxing stay at the Akumal Beach Resort. This is not a fancy place to stay, but the white sand beach and employees are what visitors keep coming back to. Building 7 was closed for remodeling so only buildings 5 and 6 contained guests. That meant there were no crowds or lines anywhere to be found at the resort. Our room was on the 2nd floor of building 6. We found this location to be to our liking (nice view of the ocean/beach, no noise from the pool/bar and close to the restaurant). The room was very quiet and the air conditioning was quite adequate to keep the room cool and the humidity at bay. Like others have reported, the bed was hard, but had a foam mattress pad already on it which made sleeping quite comfortable. Our King size bed had 3 or 4 nice pillows on it and 2 spare pillows in the closet. There was a small in-room safe that we used to store our passports & money. The staff (from check-in to bar to restaurant) was friendly and their service was excellent. There are two computers in the lobby that you can use to quickly check your flight status and email. Wi-fi in the lobby/bar area was available for $10/day, but we did not use it. There was construction just north of the resort where a Secrets resort is being built. The only time we heard noise from the construction was while we were sitting on the beach near the site, and it was just some minor noises. We were told by the staff that the resort will be closed September – December for large-scale remodeling which should include at least one new restaurant. The theater was also closed while we were there. All shows (live music, break dancing, trivia) were being held in the bar at 9 pm each night. We ate in their main buffet for most meals and really enjoyed the made-to-order eggs (fried/omelets) for breakfast; and the made-fresh-to-order Mexican options for lunch & dinner (such as tostadas, soft tacos, etc). My wife really enjoyed many of the vegetarian choices. We ate two dinners in the reservation-only dining room. Each night the menu rotates between Mexican and Italian. We found both very filling and enjoyable. The snorkeling was fantastic! The water was easiest to enter on the north end of the resort which is where most of the turtles and ray are to be observed. There is a large coral reef sheltering most of the beach area and the water was shallow enough that it could easily be viewed while snorkeling. The resort has signs up that explain that beach chairs are not to be reserved for more than 45 minutes without actively being used. However, we saw no enforcement of that policy and commonly noticed guests putting towels on chairs to “save” them and then not showing back up to the beach for 3 or 4 hours. Since the resort was only partially occupied, we really didn't have any issue locating a nice place to sit on the beach, but once the resort opens back up fully, they should consider enforcing their existing policy. This was an excellent overall place to stay, and we would definitely consider Akumal Beach Resort when we next return to the Mexican Riviera. Suggestions for items to bring from home: • Beach bag – Nice to haul gear back and forth from your room. • Wash cloths – Our room did not have them, but after we asked at the front desk they showed up for the remainder of our stay. • Insulated mugs – There is no bar service on the beach so if you bring your own mug, the bartenders will make your drink in it and you can stay cool in the sun without having to run back to the bar constantly.

First trip to Akumal

The overall experience was good. The resort is very basic and the food is okay. If you are looking for a very low key quiet get away this is a good place. No night life, no fan fair. The beach is nice but rocky, snorkeling is really nice. Turtles are everywhere. The food lacked a lot. If you are looking for gourmet this is not the place. The rooms are clean but minimalistic. The bed and pillows are hard as a rock, worst I have ever seen! Beach view was great and again the room was descent. I probably would not go back but it's not a bad resort. I just like a little better level of comfort and food than this one has to offer.
