not what we paid for

Would not recommend Tue, Oct 6, 2015
When we arrived although we had paid for a superior room with 2 beds with a nice view and a balcony on the port, we were put in a room that was just big enough to walk around the bed with the view of the parking lot and garbage cans. We were also told that there was no other room available. After an hour argument and the staff at the reception desk waking up the manager we were given a room on the 4th floor with a little window at leas looking out and with two beds put together so we agreed to take that. We also learned from our guide that the hotel was going to close down for renovation and that they did not care about clients. We decided not to sign up for breakfast as we thought it was a rip off Euros 18.50 per person. The desk also told us that if we had signed up with breakfast included when we make the reservation it would be only Euros 15.00. All in All only the location was good. The rest was very average. Also I almost forgot the fridge in the room did not work. The drinks they had in there were all warm and the temperature outside was 27 degrees Celcius!!!.

A great experience for my wife and I. The hotel met our expectations and knew in advance that it is to undergo a major refurbishment in November. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

poor, tired hotel Phonecia

Would not recommend Mon, Jul 6, 2015
Phoenicia was once probably one of the best hotels in Malta, due to its grand style and location to Valletta. However, although the reception and grand entrance are grand and stylish, the other aspects of the property are very disappointing. The gardens are okay leading to the pool, but once you arrive at the pool the area is a let-down...old sunbeds with grubby tables, the pool water was like old bath water. It was so murky that i love to swim but would never take a chance in dirty water like that, i would have been sick for a week.A pal who was travelling with us ordered a mocktail and it was undrinkable. We ordered water and the plastic cups were dirty and smelled awful. Consequently, we never went near the pool again. As for the room, the entrance door was dirty, full of weeks worth of old handprints, so not a good start..the windows were dirty, the bathroom tired with loose floor tiles and cracked tiles on the wall...all the chrome fittings are pitted and need replacing..towels were erratically changed..we had one bathrobe in a twin room...overall, for the cost, the quality was worse than poor for the hotel..we were not asked at check-out for any kind of feedback, as i was more than willing to describe the experience we had..very,very below standard, and we are not pleased...

Great hotel!

Would recommend Sat, Sep 14, 2013
Still not sure whether our room was a double deluxe with harbour view as on our last day saw opposite side had floor to ceiling window where we only had standard window but other than that was really spoiled. Went for the history and location and was not disappointed! Recommend contacting hotel directly if u have specific requirements.....I was aware that at moment 3rd and 4th floor are refurbished so was willing to have modern over balcony....lovely quiet room and staff so helpful. Did room only as so close to valetta wanted to go and do breakfast in their many cafes....the hotel also did a very reasonable coffee and crossiant for 3.80 which was great for basic refuelling and could include cappuccinos etc and they have lovely chocolate crossiants. Ate at the Pegasus brassiere on the final night. Was the most expensive meal of out stay but well worth it especially as they filleted the fish and food was perfect. Malta is superb (as it was when we were last there at their sister hotel 6 yrs ago) lots to see and do with spectacular people, history and weather.....we even had a storm to make us feel at home :-). The open top buses were new to us but ideal to see the island without having to drive ourselves. Go to the falconry experience but be aware only open till 12.30....on the south tour but we did taxi there so we could spend maximum time there and simple to get normal bus back....fantastic people who love birds of prey! Missed the old Malta buses but the new ones had better air con. Will be back....to Malta and this hotel as its location is superb and want to see the new city gates finished....maybe be tempted by our of season visit.

Money saver

Get an open top bus and get free harbour tour which was really informative.

A Good Choice

Would recommend Mon, Apr 29, 2013
We chose the Phoenicia as we were attending a ball in the function suite and because of its convenient location adjacent to the old city. In terms of comfort and convenience it cannot be faulted. Our room was comfortable and well appointed. Our only concern was the cost of meals (even breakfast was very expensive) and as a result we ate out every evening but in Valletta that is no hardship.

unstuffy luxury

Would recommend Wed, Mar 27, 2013
We warmed to this hotel with every day. The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. I returned from an evening out having badly twisted my ankle. Within minutes an ice pack arrived in our room, and a lady in reception phoned the next day to make sure I was OK. We had room service breakfast most days, and it arrived promptly. It did seem to vary in terms of what arrived, and maybe the hotel should consider introducing a standard quantity (this was a breakfast bakers basket). But overall, we were very happy and would definitely book the Phoenicia again.

Money saver

Meals in the restaurant are very expensive, but there is a very acceptable room service menu which is much more affordable.
