This is a great budget hotel with a fantastic location. Ideal for those wanting to be close to Malta's main shopping and entertainment areas. (DB 04/09) Although there are 8 stories to the hotel, property is quite small, typical of other buildings along the sea front. Hotel is family-run and situated in Malta's popular resort of Sliema, enjoying spectacular views of the Mediterranean coastline. Apart from its prime seafront location, the property is within walking distance from the fashionable Sliema shopping area. This value-for-money hotel is surrounded by shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and is just across the road from a rocky public beach.Valletta, is a 20 min bus ride away.

It's good for the price

The Hotel is at a good location. Convenient for the transportation and restaurants. The entrance is a bit awkward - you either have to go thru the neighboring restaurant or climb the stairs to the first floor.

take the local bus, they all have air-conditioning. It's better than the sight-seeing buses.

Firstly, it needs to be made clear that the 3 star rating is a bit misleading, though this is in keeping with Malta's somewhat generous hotel rating system. The amenities, decor and general repair of the building are at best perfunctory, and in this sense you pay for what you get. The trade off is that it is in a fantastic location by the seafront close to the centre of Sliema. The staff are frendly and helpful, which is no small way a saving grace too. (It might be worth mentioning that there is also wifi available, which cost 2 Euro to connect but lasted my whole stay). The overall feel is of a hostel, hence the title of my review. I would definitely book again. ***a warning to anyone staying in 2011 however; the building next to the hotel is being renovated, with incredibly noisy work going on 6 days a week from 7.30am. The building looked far from completed when I stayed in mid August.

Roma

The furnishings at the Roma are plain but satisfactory for a bargain hotel. The staff is friendly and accomodating and wants to make your stay pleasant. If you are nice to [...]she will treat you like family. The breakfast is a cold breakfast but good. Two rooms out of five on each floor have a balcony with a stunning view of the Mediterranean where one can watch regattas on weekends. The location of the Roma is in the center of the most pleasant part of Malta between the historic capital Valletta and trendy St. Julian's and very close to the newly renovated Tigne Point which has a small (by American standards) upscale shopping mall. A walk along the brick Promenade to St. Julian's roughly four or five miles away is exotic and spectacular day or night. In season you may smell jasmine and find ripe olives falling on the sidewalk. A walk both ways might be a bit much, but you can easily catch a bus going back anywhere along the route which drops you off a short block away from the Roma.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

I like Maltese food and ate mostly Maltese dishes whereever I went or a Mediterranean seafood dish. Why eat Chinese food in Rome? The L'aroma Restaurant on the ground floor of the Roma is a good place to eat, the lampuki (mahi mahi)in season and the Maltese antipasta were excellent. The Fortizza (in an old fort on edge of the sea), and the Ta Kolina both have good food. At the Fortizza the smoked salmon with prawns topped with a little caviar and a salad was enough for two people and at 9.5 euro was very good and a bargain. I ate more often at he Surfside than any other restaurant because of the setting and view. I had only one dish there that I did not like, Cajun chicken, and I should have known better. The Surfside Restaurant is a few blocks down the Promenade. The Siciliana pasta with fresh tuna, lots of fresh capers and olives was very good. The surf pounding on the rocks below makes a for a teriffic setting. The Ta Kolina is the most upscale of these restaurants.
