Honeymoon in Japan

From the moment we arrived to our 'honeymoon suite' all the way through until we left, the Oak Hotel staff was 100% compliant with anything and everything we desired and more. Even with the earthquake, the loss of power and news updates (not in english) they kept us posted with the current events and made sure that we had a Black Electrical Torch aka flashlight working at all times. I can't tell you how much they have helped us out, made us feel comfortable and over all made our honeymoon in Japan as exquisite and as much fun as possible. The pre-printed English to Japanese flyer was a multiple life saver. As a veteran and engineer I would recommend my friends to to experience the Oak hotel, as a new husband married to a lovely lady, we will lodge there the next time we are in Japan. We've been back for 2 days and we miss the Oak Hotel already.

Entertainment tip: Long walk from hotel

If transportation gets you far, make sure that you are willing to walk back in case you get stuck in the middle of an earthquake.

clean, cheap, quiet

Walking distance to awesome area of Ueno, much less pretentious than the rest of Tokyo! The hotel is very foreigner accommodating. Check out time at 10Am which is annoying, and hefty fees for using the hotel phone to make even local calls! Also, having to put a deposit on things like a power converter is pretty lame, but I suppose necessary. Bathroom was kind of small but nothing out of the ordinary.

Friendly staff who avoid being

Friendly staff who avoid being overbearing or intrusive and speak good English - thus redoubling my guilt at STILL not getting to grips with basic Japanese. A decent size room by Tokyo budget hotel standards and in impeccable condition. Room and the ensuite were serviced to a high standard daily. No curfew and secure entry after 1am but despite that the hotel was quiet and not some backpackers frat house. The guests were from a wide range of countries and of all ages so no-one need feel out of place. Its great location puts you 10 minutes from Ueno Station and the Yamanote Line, 15 minutes from the Keisei Ueno which takes you to and from Narita in around an hour. In the other direction you're 15 minutes from Asakusa and never far from a wide choice of cheap, good quality food and pleasant coffee shops. I stayed a week and didn't eat at the same place twice, still had loads left to try. Long story short; a good time was had and I'll definitely be back.

A friendly hotel, but one could

A friendly hotel, but one could do better in the area (Asakusa Ryokan Toukaisou nearby was about a third cheaper and had bigger rooms with bigger ensuite bathrooms) the single room I had did not have enough floor space to keep a suitcase open. However, they have a hotel rather than a hostel reception and there was usually a free internet terminal available. They also have a free bike to loan although these are available to rent for very little in the area.

Its An OK hotel = OAK hotel. The room is small and just adequate for 2 person. The problem I experienced is that I stayed in Japan for 10days and our luggage was big. So the room becomes more smaller because of our luggage. If you plan to go Japan and not buying many things then this hotel is good. Otherwise if you plan to buy a lot of things like me then the hotel is too small for you.

Great little hotel

Well, going from US for the first time to Japan, everything seems tiny, so it wasn't a big shock (ok, it was somewhat) when we saw the room. Specially when you consider what you pay for it - we are used to getting a decent sized double queen/king room with breakfast in US for what we paid here. This was a Japanese style room, and we could barely move around, after juggling with our luggage, clothes, and each other! The location isn't too great either - it is a good walk from the JR Ueno station, which could seem much longer if you are tired from an international flight and are lugging your luggage. I would recommend taking the taxi. The hotel sign is quite small (it is on the pavement, I kept searching for it up top, and overshot it by a good 5-6 blocks) and is easy to miss. I would suggest printing a street-view map before going. What more than made up for all this was the great attitude of the staff! These people were super friendly. They right away invited us to a party going on in the hotel. After knowing that we were vegetarians, they went to great lengths to come up with veg food options. In all it was a great experience.

Western style beds are a bit hard.

Western style beds are a bit hard. Overall room is slightly bigger then other hotels. Staff is always there to help and will invite you to celebrate local holidays. Dryer is a bit small with load size to drying ratio. Overall, a good experience and will use them again.

Second stay at this hotel. Friendly

Second stay at this hotel. Friendly staff, free internet in lobby and rooms. plus shared laundry, kitchen and small dining area. Small but adequate rooms en suite with air con. Excellent location for Kisei line from Narita, metro and Yamanonte line, walking distance to Asakusa and Akihabara, plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby.
