Pricing

The only negative we found was that all the restaurants were so expensive. We never actually managed to eat in the hotel at all, and we would have liked to. Even one or tw medium priced restaurants would have been good, especially for breakfast.

Very good, well-located hotel.

I've stayed at the New Otani Tokyo about twenty times over the years. The staff is first rate, good rooms -- overall very nice. Their standard rates are high, but using Ob--z, we got a good discount. The hotel has a great garden which is rarely enjoyed by most guests. It is located near both the subway and Yotsuya station, so it is easy to get anywhere in Tokyo from the hotel. There is a good food shop in at the ground level where you can get almost anything if you want to bring some food up to your room. Fruit, prepared foods, tofu, yogurt, rice balls etc. are all reasonably priced. If you're traveling with family (wife and child) they, as most Japanese hotels, charge for each guest and it can be substantial, so figure it out beforehand.

If you're jet lagged and can't stand the thought of room service or going out to find a restaurant, use the food shop at the ground level, mentioned in the review.

Tokyo Metro right out back door

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to the Metro and it turned out to be one of the best things about the hotel. The hotel itself is huge and very busy all the time with what looks like tour groups and business people. We stayed in the Garden Tower as we needed a triple (3 beds) and our room was a very decent size. There was a separate living room with its own tv. Beds are quite firm, but the pillows were comfortable. Nice toiletries in the bathroom, but somewhat disappointed that the toilet didn't have the heated seat option. That's always one of the fun things for us when we go to Japan. Lots of restaurants in the hotel, but all quite expensive. We went to the breakfast buffet at the top of the Garden Tower and that was quite nice. The view of the gardens and Imperial Palace grounds are fantastic. We were also invited to a complimentary drinks & appetizers event and that was especially nice. The appetizers were very high end -- beautiful to look at and delicious. Tells me if that is what the kitchens in the hotel can put out, then perhaps they justify the prices that are charged. There's a Family Mart located in the adjoining complex, so you can pick up water, snacks easily without leaving the hotel. There's also a French boulangerie right out the Garden Tower back door exit, to the left, that had wonderful pastries and sandwiches which were relatively inexpensive. Also close by are lots of affordable restaurants, so no need to eat at the hotel. Tokyo Metro is really close by. The Akasaka Mitsuke station is a transfer point for several lines, so very convenient to get pretty much everywhere we wanted to go. If you need the JR line, then its a little bit of a hike to get to the Yotsuya station, but its quite a pleasant walk out the front door of the hotel, down a quiet tree lined street. Hotel staff isn't always fluent in English, but generally speak enough to help you out. Always very friendly. Concierge desk did their best to try to help us find specific restaurants & stores and provided maps for popular areas. Overall, a good experience.

Join the New Otani Club -- its free. Gives you discounts on dining in the hotel, room rates, and other things. The breakfast buffet at the top of the Garden Tower is priced around $39/person, but with the card, I paid $23/person. Great deal in Tokyo.

One Week in Tokyo

Had a great experience at Hotel New Otani. The staff was helpful and the dining area has a great view of a waterfall. Wi-Fi is free but you need to go to the lobby area. It is a large building with a lot of traffic so you may need to wait to use the elevators.

Best location for exploring the city

We have travelled many times to Tokyo and have hit all the major spots by shuttling around on the train and metro. On this trip we found ourselves in a neighborhood very conducive to walking to Roppongi, Aoyama, Shinjuku and the Imperial Palace grounds but also convenient to 5 different subway lines when we needed to get somewhere quickly. The garden setting of the hotel makes it a pleasant oasis in the hustle bustle of the city. The one amenity I really miss though is an onsen bath like many simple non-5 star hotels have in Japan.

For runners - go out the garden tower entrance to the loop around the Imperial Palace or out of the main building entrance to access the path around the Akasaka Estate and through the Olympic stadium area.

Great views, but a bit dated.

The views are great from the Garden Tower and the garden itself is great. But the amenities feel quite 70s and it is a stuffy place. All in all nice, but dated.

A Peaceful Retreat in Bustling Tokyo

After a full day of meetings, shopping and sight seeing and the ceaseless hustle and bustle of a major metropolitan area like Tokyo, the Hotel New Otani is a soothing, relaxing and stress-reducing island of calm. The staff are welcoming and eager to assist and make every guest feel like a highly honored visitor. The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, quiet and comfortable and the responsiveness of the housekeeping and room service staff is without compare. Ideally located on the Marunouchi and Ginza subway lines, access to the entire metro area and all major long distance destinations via Tokyo's extensive, clean and efficient transportation network, makes the Hotel New Otani a wonderful place to call home when you're in Tokyo!

In the Heart of Tokyo

I have now been a regular customer of the New Otani in Tokyo, staying there at least twice a year. I choose it primarily for it's location, but also for the value. I've never had a problem at this hotel. The staff are extremely courteous and helpful, the rooms clean and practical, and the amenities first-class. In fact there are only two very small negatives I can think of - the work-out room is not very good and the hotel is very sprawling - almost like a small village. But those are very minor issues. On the positive side the very old Japanese garden on the grounds is not to be missed. In addition, the hotel has a wide variety of restaurants for every taste and price range. I stay at many hotels all over the world yet the New Otani is one of the few that feels like home.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

The main Akasaka area is just a 5-7 minute walk from the hotel and features a wide variety of restaurants, nightlife, and shopping. Shibuya is just a few stops away on the subway. 3 different subway lines are within 5 minutes walk from the hotel. So, easy to get anywhere in Tokyo on their highly efficient metro system.
