Wonderful Japan
Final Stop
After two weeks in Japan, this was our final stop. The location was right next to the Shinkansen so we had easy access to Narita. However, we didn't need it as the hotel had a bus which made the luggage transfer easier. This was a good last stop as the facilities were a little older than usual but it was less expensive and, as usual in Japan, we were well cared for.

Pack light and wash along the way. Less luggage makes for easy transfers on the trains which sometimes takes place in a matter of minutes or seconds.

Four Stars for a Reason
Besides the confusion of the hotel's name with two other hotels in the same area with similar names, the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa was spectacular. It boasts a beautiful Japanese garden, excellent and attentive service and immaculately clean and comfortable rooms. Though moderately dated, the rooms are good sized and have all of the amenities (full sized body wash, conditioner and shampoo, mini fridge, free internet, coffee/tea maker, flat screen t.v., slippers and nice Japanese robes) I did not spend much time in the Shinigawa area, but this hotel is conveniently located one block from the Shinigawa train station, and it's easy to get everywhere in Tokyo. Of course, everything at the hotel (food, drinks, etc) is incredibly expensive, but that's par for the course in Tokyo. If you enjoy understated elegance, cleanliness and great service, you will enjoy this hotel

Good Room, Good Value
Very small room at an older Japanese hotel. Staff was wonderful and everyone spoke English. It's a few blocks uphill from the Shinagawa train station, so it was very convenient for us. They also included 20% off meal coupons, which were fantastic for us since we used one on our wedding reception and got a $1,000 discount on it!

Use the 20% off coupon for large meals. Also, for a shorter walk, cut through the Prince Sakura hotel and it will cut you walk time by almost half.

Grand Prince Takanawa
This is my fourth stay in Shinagawa in the past eight years, and the third time with the Prince brand in the Shinagawa Station area, but this is the first time at this particular hotel. It was a little confusing figuring out which tower I was in, as there are probably half a dozen, each with their own check-in desks. Believe it or not, there is one tower called The Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa and the Grand Prince New Hotel Takanawa to make it even more confusing. But when I did check in to the wrong tower, I couldn't believe how the check-in clerk (not a bellhop) walked my luggage all the way to the correct tower. Staff helpfulness was impecabble and they speak good English. This tower is not as close to the Station as the towers in the Prince Shinagawa complex, which is basically across the street. If I had to stay in Shinagawa again, I would go back to the Prince Shinagawa rather than the Takanawa tower for walking distance alone. My only warning to Americans used to 5-star American hotels is that they should lower their expectations. A 5-star Japanese room, aside from the service, is more like a 3.5-4.0 star. Its decent and clean but by no means luxurious.
