Excellent Hotel

I loved the location, especially as we came by Shinkansen and only had to drag our bags upstairs. We arrived promptly at ... three and were surprised to be put on the club floor due to a 15-minute delay in check-in. This turned out to be great because we were able to check e-mail and have juice and coffee free of charge. The lounge was lovely and the staff there was helpful but I found the downstairs desk staff to be pretentious and sometimes pushy. I speak excellent Japanese but was only able to get them to abandon their less-than-excellent English by insisting they answer me in Japanese--it shouldn't be that hard! Since they're used to dealing with non-Japanese-speaking tourists, they should make better restaurant recommendations for them. We went to one in Gion that had no English language menu, which is common in Kyoto and fine for me--I ordered in Japanese and had a great meal--but the other gaijin were stuck with a very boring set menu (with photographs) that showed none of the seasonal specialties we enjoyed.

Unless you have lots of time, don't bother with public transportation in Kyoto. There are 400 taxis in Kyoto, scores of which are right outside the station. It wasn't cheap (though probably not much more than the subway, since there were three of us), but we maximized our sightseeing by taking taxis everywhere and saw 7 temples, Nijo Castle and the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) in two days.
