Very convenient for a short trip to Kyoto

Perfect location if coming from Tokyo on the bullet train. Hotel was very nice, if a little large and generic. Staff, particularly concierge desk, was very helpful.

Extremely good location and nice room

Being at the Kyoto Train Station, this hotel is ideal. Kyoto transportation system is almost centralized from the Kyoto station. Hotel is clean, and extremely quiet in the guest floor. We had the room facing north, i.e., seeing Kyoto Tower right out from the window. That's a nice plus.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Across from the hotel is the department store on the other side of the train station building. For something to take back to your room, there is a supermarket at the basement; for something simple, there is a 'noodle alley' (many noodle shops) on the 10th floor; for something fancy, there are many restaurants on the 11th floor.

The very Best in all our visit in Japan

Strategically located, since you can move from the station to ANY part of the city surroundings like Nara or other cities like Tokyo. Buses go from there to visit the town. I can not imagine a better service than received always friendly and efficiently almost perfect. I travel quite frequently for business and leissure around the world and certainly thi is a hidden treausure. Is a Pitty there are no other Gran Vias around Japan and the rest of the world!

Outstanding Service and Location

Ours was a sightseeing trip to Kyoto and, since the many sights are spread all over the quite large city, we chose the hotel for its location over the intercity train station (for ease on arrival and departure) and its consequent access to taxis and public transport. That strategy worked perfectly. Equally important, the hotel exceeded all expectations for service even in service-mad Japan. One example--one evening the hotel restaurant we had hoped to walk in to was fully booked, and we asked the concierge to recommend another. Within minutes she had made us a reservation, put together a map plus a letter of introduction to the restaurant manager, and come running up to meet us carrying that plus multiple umbrellas, apologizing all the while that the hotel restaurant had been unable to take us. The recommended restaurant was outstanding.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

Within walking distance of the hotel are many lesser-known temples and shrines. For early risers we would particularly recommend a visit to the 6am ceremony at Nishi-Hongwanji, which is held 365 days a year.

Exceptional service, rooms, location!

The hotel staff is completely service-oriented and supported my family in an outstanding manner. We had an unfortunate situation which required us to stay an additional night, and the hotel graciously accomodated us. The rooms are spotless, spacious, and comfortable. The bathrooms in the upgraded rooms are fantastic. The breakfast buffet in the Le Temps restaurant is amazing--don't bypass the croissants! We also enjoyed the kaiseki food in the Kitcho restaurant which lived up to its reputation as one of the finest in Kyoto. This was my second stay at the Granvia Kyoto and I will definitely return.

Excellent Hotel

I loved the location, especially as we came by Shinkansen and only had to drag our bags upstairs. We arrived promptly at three and were surprised to be put on the club floor due to a 15-minute delay in check-in. This turned out to be great because we were able to check e-mail and have juice and coffee free of charge. The lounge was lovely and the staff there was helpful but I found the downstairs desk staff to be pretentious and sometimes pushy. I speak excellent Japanese but was only able to get them to abandon their less-than-excellent English by insisting they answer me in Japanese--it shouldn't be that hard! Since they're used to dealing with non-Japanese-speaking tourists, they should make better restaurant recommendations for them. We went to one in Gion that had no English language menu, which is common in Kyoto and fine for me--I ordered in Japanese and had a great meal--but the other gaijin were stuck with a very boring set menu (with photographs) that showed none of the seasonal specialties we enjoyed.

Time-saving tip: In Hotel

Unless you have lots of time, don't bother with public transportation in Kyoto. There are 400 taxis in Kyoto, scores of which are right outside the station. It wasn't cheap (though probably not much more than the subway, since there were three of us), but we maximized our sightseeing by taking taxis everywhere and saw 7 temples, Nijo Castle and the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) in two days.
