Convenient, clean & affordable
This hotel is located just a few minutes walk from the Kyoto subway. Staff were very friendly and helpful, although spoke poor English. Rooms are clean but small. On-site breakfast buffet was convenient and high quality. This hotel provides bicycles for guests free of charge.

Hearton Hotel Kyoto
I attended a conference held at Kyoto International Conference Center. This location was much more convenient and better than the hotels designated by the conference. It was within a couple of minutes from the subway. Dinner and breakfast were excellent, and well worth the price. Room was clean, and internet access included. Lack of an English channel on TV was the only problem (I found this to be the case at many other hotels as well)

Great location, (relatively) large twin
Convenient location close to subway and bus routes. Several blocks from Starbucks. Friendly staff. Free internet, but they said they would be charging soon. TV had English option for BBC and CNN. All in all a good choice!

Our Top Choice for Kyoto
Our 3-week stay in Kyoto had us changing hotels several times in order to get the best value. Thus we had a taste of two different "expensive" hotels (the Grand Prince and the New Miyako), in addition to the much more budget-friendly Hearton. While the rooms were understandably smaller than those in the more expensive hotels, at no point did we find it too small. With our first stay lasting 11 nights, the small size had ample time to get on our nerves, but it didn't. For those new to Kyoto but determined to employ public transit as opposed to the very expensive taxis, the Hearton's location couldn't be better. About 3 minutes walk to Karasuma-Oike station, the intersection point of the two main subway lines (Tozai and Karasuma). Only 3 stations away from Kyoto station, yet at a price per night much less than any hotel near Kyoto station. The front entrance is modern and sleek, with thick-paned, sliding glass doors. The staff are very friendly, and very likely to greet you every time you walk through the doors. The breakfast buffet, while smaller than some hotels, is a great value at 1000 Yen each, as opposed to the 2000 Yen each we paid elsewhere. The bed was good quality and comparable to those at the more expensive hotels. However, be advised that virtually all Japanese beds are notably firmer than we North Americans may be used to, at least in our experience. Laundry facilities are available on 3 different floors, at a reasonable price. Also, unlike, the more expensive hotels, internet is provided in your hotel room, and completely free! By all means, if we can stay at this hotel again in the future, we will!

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
A short walk east of the hotel (along Oike Street) will bring you to a great restaurant/ bakery (boulangerie) on the north side of the street. Primarily suited for a great lunch, with excellent value for the money.

The hotel was in a great location
The hotel was in a great location right near the subway. At such a reasonable price it was clean and well equipt. The buffet breakfast which was not included in our accomodation was well worth paying for before a day of exploring this lovely city.

Great Location (hard to find at first)
Just one block from subway, shopping, etc. Hotel staff recommended Gion Corner, we loved it, the tea ceremony, the geishas, the actors/dancers, ikebana, etc.!!! A must-see! Himeiji castle was worth the train ride (we had a train pass good for unlimited travel for a week, what a savings!) We did 3 temples including the Golden Pagoda via train or subway or bus, so easy! When it rained the hotel gave us umbrellas! Bicycles could also be had. Room had only a double bed and the closet was tiny; we loved Kyoto anyway!
