Room smelled like smoke

I requested a non-smoking room, but it was obviously a former smoking room. Thankfully I was able to switch to another room. But the bed covers, carpet, etc. need updating. Hotel staff also directed me towards the wrong bus stop. Could have been a better experience.

Good Choice

About 1/2 mile from Kyoto station, not much further from Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace, and a very short walk from Gojo station - this is a solid choice for a stay in Kyoto (especially with the 4 days or more discount). The staff is helpful and responsive. The rooms are about standard size for the price for Japan. Internet was free, but tempermental. There was plenty of room in the small fridge for purchased items. It will definitely be an option when I am next in Kyoto.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There is a great soba restaurant on the same side of Gojo as the hotel just a couple minutes east and a well stocked supermarket across Gojo and to the right.

many plusses, and a minus

the location on gojo avenue is excellent. it is not far from kyoto (train) station, and hence it is not too expensive to go to/from the station. gojo is a large street, but is not too crowded with tourists, so getting a taxi should not be a big problem. shijo avenue is right in the center of the action. but the down side of shijo is that it is too busy with tourists. hence, gojo (where the aranvert is located) is a better place to stay. gojo is only a short walk from shijo. the common hot tub is excellent. however, management should be encouraged to post signs making it clear that bathers should completely clean themselves BEFORE entering the tub. it is customary and EXPECTED that bathers will wash and rinse prior to getting in the tub. those who know how to use a japanese bath are grossed out by the foreigners who jump into the tub as soon as they get there. WASH AND RINSE FIRST. i would rate the place a "5" if it had in-house internet access. as it is, there is an internet cafe just down the street on gojo avenue. there are so many excellent restaurants in the area, that it would probably be wise to take in the traditional kyoto food. after all, kyoto was the imperial capital for a thousand years.

Interesting

When we arrived at this hotel, it took a while to check in. The staff stated that we were not to check in until the date that we were scheduled to check out. I presented the confirmation email to the staff and after about 5 minutes, I convinced them that my confirmation showed us checking in that day and out 3 days later. There is internet access in this hotel, but NO computers to use. There is not a smoking deck, so if you smoke, get a smoking room or be prepared to stand outside the front of the hotel on the street. The breakfast in the hotel was COLD although it had a wonderful selection.
