Small room, but good value for the price

We stayed one night at APA Horikawadori during our trip to Kyoto. The hotel is located on a small alley off the main street, about a 10 minute walk from the Kyoto train station. The room was very clean and functional, but a bit on the small side - in particular, the bathroom was so small that it feels like you're on a plane, with barely enough space to turn around. Overall, APA Horikawadori was a convenient base for exploring Kyoto, close to the train station, the bus system, etc. We didn't spend too much time in the room anyway, so the small size wasn't an issue.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The top floor of the Isetan department store (which is part of the Kyoto train station) has several great restaurants, specializing in different Kyoto specialties like yuba (tofu skin) cuisine, Kyoto vegetarian cuisine, etc. They seem to be frequented by locals and are good for an authentic Kyoto meal.

tiny but functional

Close to the jr station and thus all the restaurants located in the Porta and the top floors of the jr station. Also close to the city bus system where you can purchase an all day pass for $5.00

We ate every night in either the Porta which is an underground shopping center in front of the rail station or in the upstairs two floors of the rail station. Lots of choices for people. There are some places that offer a cheap but good breakfast.

Small rooms but good location

I stayed only for a couple nights with friends, it's from walking distance of Kyoto station which is very convenient. The rooms are very small but they are ok and have everything you need although big people will have trouble bathing in there.

Nice hotel; confusing name

THE HOTEL IS A SHORT WALK FROM THE STATION, BUT I HAD TROUBLE FINDING IT. FIRST OF ALL THERE IS ANOTHER HOTEL IN THE AREA WITH THE NAME "APA" AND I MISTOOK THIS HOTEL FOR THAT ONE. ALSO - THE MAP ON [...] MAKES THE HOTEL LOOK FURTHER WEST OF THE TRAIN STATION THAT IT ACTUALLY IS, SO I WENT WAY OUT OF MY WAY LOOKING FOR IT. TOUGH WHEN YOU'RE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY. ONCE I FOUND IT (WITH THE HELP OF FRIENDLY LOCALS), I WAS SATISFIED WITH IT. ROOMS A LITTLE SMALL, BUT THAT'S JAPAN.

Reasonable value for the price

This hotel provides an adequate base for sightseeing or business in Kyoto. The twin room is average in size for a Japanese business hotel, but the double room is very small. Check-in seemed awkward and complicated--the reservation for one of our three prepaid rooms apparently could not be found initially. Mosquitoes in the lobby were a problem for some in our group. The whistles and bells on the toilets in the lobby bathrooms were a great source of entertainment. The staff was gracious and accommodating with storing luggage before check-in and after check-out.

friendly staff and good location

The hotel is just a 5-10min walk from Kyoto Station which can save you a lot of time every morning/evening getting to and from your destinations. Hotel staff is very friendly and courteous. Rooms are a bit small, as in the case for many Japanese hotel rooms, but they are clean and cozy. All in all, a good place to stay with good value for your money. I would recommend it.
