I stayed in Portopia Hotel for 3 nights to attend a conference. I really enjoyed the stay in Portopia hotel. This hotel is close Kobe port. There is not many shops outside the hotel, except an café and IKEA, but there are quite a few nice
restaurant options in the hotel itself. I can find nice food with a reasonable price in the hotel. In addition, the hotel has free shuttle bus to Sannomiya and Shin-Kobe every 20 minutes, which is very convenient for customers. I used the swimming pool as well, and I love it! Finally, I thought the room size in Japan is usually very small, but not Portopia. I love the room size and service. I really appreciate the services Portopia provided and would definitely go back to stay again.

Nice hotel in slightly off location
Well kept and nice hotel with large clean rooms with excellent bathrooms and comfy beds. The rooms had no Wifi, but free internet through LAN-cable (provided). Great view from higher floors. The breakfast buffet was good and the view over Kobe
downtown and mountains was great, but ridiculously expensive if you pay for it separately (2500 yen). There are several resturants in the hotel. They all seem very expensive, we didn't try any of them.
The location of the hotel is slightly off (unless you are attending a meeting at the Kobe International Conference Center), to get into Kobe city you need to take the automatic train "Portliner" (2 min walk from hotel, 240 yen one way) or the hotel shuttle bus (free, runs every 20 ins until 10 pm).
Very nice gym located in the hotel (1050 yen fee if you train mornings, more expensive after lunch).
One bad thing is that check in is at 3 pm.

Short drive from hotel
I would highly recommend the restaurant "Sun" in Kobe city! Slightly difficult to find, but well worth it! They don't speak a lot of English and the menu is only in Japaneese, but they are very helpful and have set menus (and they understand what you are saying if you ask for one of those). I had incredibly tasty food both days, and the helpfulness of the staff and the very Japaneese setting (and other guests) made it a cultural experience too.
The restaurant is located on the 10th floor of the building across the street from Sannomia station (north of store Marui), the easiest way to find it is to look for the Kobe Tourist information office, don't enter the builing but instead go through the glass doors to the left (on the outside) and take the elevator up to 10th floor.
The address is: Sannomiya 1-10-1, Kobe Kotsu Center Building 10F
