The Riu Ochos Rios is a five-star Jamaican resort owned and operated by the Spanish-based Riu hotel chain. Overlooking the Caribbean Sea and surrounded by lush green woodland and gushing waterfalls, the hotel showcases the best of both worlds - open-air beachfront luxury and forested hideaways. Gleaming balconied facades overlook the on-site kids and adult swimming pools, while the inside air is rich with the signature scents of the Riu brand's Renova Spa and the decidedly upscale Sir Richard and Sir John restaurants. Five meeting rooms culminate in the 5,000-square-foot Gran Salon, making the hotel a magnet for business travelers in addition to tropical vacationers.
Key facts
  • 856 guestrooms
  • All-inclusive breakfast and snacks
  • Unlimited beverages from the bar
  • Restaurants: Mandalay (Asian), Mamee Bay Steakhouse, Tushima (Japanese), St. Ann, Piccola Italia, Sir John and Sir Richard (gourmet reservation for adults-only wing)
  • Multipurpose sports facilities
  • Floodlit hard-surface tennis court
  • Full-service sauna and Jacuzzi
Neighborhood
You'll find Riu Ochos Rios on Jamaica's northern shore, some 2.5 miles from the popular resort town of Ochos Rios. The hotel has its own secluded space in Mammee Bay, with direct access to the Ochos Rios cruise terminal and the very beach made famous in the James Bond film Dr No. Dive all day long at Dolphin Cove along the coast, or watch the mighty Dunn's River Falls a few miles to the east of the hotel grounds.
Hints and tips
For those planning a romantic couple's vacation, Riu Ochos Rios includes a deluxe adults-only wing, providing access to exclusive areas of the property and facilities not available to families. These include the Sir Richard gourmet restaurant and a private check-in. Although the on-site cuisine is certifiably high-class, don’t miss out on low-key, homemade fare - the jerk hut selling pork, sausages and chicken on the beach is a visitor favorite.

awful service

Bedsheets were stained, requested for them to be changed 4 times since each time they were changed they still had stains. No one answers front desk phones. There was a roach crawling out of the buffet. Someone came into my room 2 times with a key card in 1 night. Front desk supervisor claims a computer glitch in their system indicated my room was vacant. The shower water was either scalding hot or there was no water. The toilet constantly ran. The buffet food was never hot but rather lukewarm. I got sick the 2nd day from the buffet. I sat at the Dr's station at the resort for over a half hour with 3 nurses walking by who never acknowledged my presence.

Best Friend's Wedding & Getaway

What you see is what you get for this resort -- it is the typical 3 star hotel. I went down to this hotel for a wedding. The wedding ceremony itself was amazing -- good setup, prompt service, and an AWESOME photographer. Pros: Amazing staff, good cocktails (in terms of preparation, not quality of liquor), very impressive shows (we had acrobats, fire breathers, Jamaican steel drums, etc.), snorkeling right on the beach, good food (in comparison with other Jamaican resorts) Cons: location (it's 1.5-2 hours away from the airport in Montego Bay), the beds are uncomfortable, the alcohol selection is very poor, the hotel needs to be renovated (old paint, etc.)

Fantastic vacation.

We spent eight days at Riu Ocho and it was a very nice and relaxing environment. The grounds and the rooms were well kept, the staff work so hard to keep this big Resort in top shape. The food was so good and plentiful, even with a fully booked period, you could always get a hot meal up to 2am. The entertainment staff kept guest engaged day to night. Drinks and Bars were easily available, you could drink in your room or go down to the bar.The long journey from the Airport was fun.I will definitely return back to this Resort even if traveling solo.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Although places on and off the resort take American money it's a good idea to exchange some. Things are cheaper with Jamaican money.

we had a good time....

This is a beautiful and affordable hotel located in a very nice area. Besides just laying around on a lounge chair or frolicking in the water, There were a lot of activities each day and the food was delicious. I love the beach aerobics and the dance classes on the beach each mornings. My only complaint is the going into the disco and hearing the constant so Ming of the liquor bottles by the bartenders when they want the dj to play a song over. I think they need to desist because it is stupid and it makes people leave the disco in disgust. Also, a sign should be posted everywhere for guests to stop leaving plates outside their doors at nights hoping a maid will pick them up. This causes roaches to become prevalent which two friends saw in their rooms.

Plumbing issues

Overall a nice experience if you don't mind a COLD shower every day. Apparently there was work being done on the piping system the week we were there, or so we were told. How about putting a clock and/or coffee maker in the rooms?? Resort staff was very helpful and courteous.

Great!

Had an awesome stay at the Riu...staff was more than friendly and made sure they took care of us every step of the way. Food and liquor was a bit boring after awhile but I guess you can't expect much better from an all-inclusive resort. But still great! Definitely recommend to ppl!

Awesome for the Young Gen

We had an awesome time, loved the area. Room was little smelly and it took forever to get it cleaned. Other than that everything was phenomenal even though it rained.
