Oceanfront vacation “on the rocks” at relaxed Negril cliff-side resort

The casual oceanfront Samsara Resort rests on Negril's famous cliffs, which rise above coves, lagoons and stunning rock formations. Guests spend lazy days lounging by the pool or on the 400-foot oceanfront sundeck carved into the cliffs. The water below is ideal for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. An all-inclusive option includes meals, drinks and an exchange program with sister property, Legends Beach Resort, located five minutes away on Seven Mile Beach. Don't miss the stunning sunset view from the cliffs, followed by a romantic cliff-side dinner.

Highlights
  • Oceanfront location on Negril's famous cliffs
  • Shuttle to Seven Mile Beach
  • All-inclusive option with buffet and a la carte dining
  • Sun decks built into cliffs with lounges, shade tents

Rooms

Accommodations at the Samsara Resort include a mix of hotel rooms, cottages and pillar huts. They are decorated with a tropical flair of colorful fabrics, tile flooring and flower petals strewn across beds. Most enjoy sea views and all include patios or balconies overlooking gardens. All are equipped with cable TV. Some have air conditioning, while others are cooled by ceiling fans and sea breezes.

Features

The cliff-side location creates a unique alternative to the typical beach locale. Samsara Resort guests enjoy easy access to the ocean for swimming and snorkeling. Private sundecks with lounges and shade tents are chiseled into the cliffs. The pool and Jacuzzi offer stunning ocean views. Relax by the pool on a "chill-out" bed or indulge in a cliff-side massage. The resort's scuba center offers courses and a variety of dives.

Guests choosing the all-inclusive option (all meals and drinks) receive exchange privileges, including dining, at sister property Legends Beach Resort. Legends is just five minutes away on famed Seven Mile Beach. Shuttles between the resorts run regularly.

For a dramatic transition from day to night, enjoy a cliff-side cocktail as the sun sets over the water. Evenings are playful and relaxed. Start with a cliff-side dinner of West Indian red pea soup and grilled snapper, followed by a visit to the oceanfront bar. Live entertainers perform two nights per week.

charming, relaxing, uncongested resort

The hotel is in a spectacular setting. It is not fussy or overdone, but is authentic and has all one needs for a relaxing, read and snorkel and sun vacation. The staff is exceptionally charming. The restaurant across the street is excellant and so convenient, as is the Rockhouse restaurant. There are a few small things that need fixing and the room lighting was not conducive to reading at night. The telephone and TV operation was erratic. Beach towels would have been helpful. More festive plastic glasses would be nice--but these are really small details that did not detract from a wonderful experience.

Unbeatable location for the price

The Samsara Hotel was clean staff was polite and hospitable. The Hotel sat right on the water with a magnificent view. It was located away from any unsavory characters. I was never harrased or propositioned for anything. There were no unwanted advances that i heard about prior to my trip and other reviews of beach front hotels. Located close to resteraunts. Taxis and other means of transportaion were readliy available.

Basic and beautiful. We stayed in the T4 pillar house and for what we payed I can't imagine a nicer place to wake up. The room was cleaned everyday and towels were fresh everyday.

Nice play to stay for one week

The hotel is very well located on the reef. You can dive in the water from the cliff. At night, it is the best place to look at the sky and count the stars :). You will have to walk on a busy road to get to the city but there is one or two snack places around available. The food at the hotel is good. To go to the beach, you can take a free shuttle in the morning or take a taxi (5 $).

Peaceful and Serene

Loving this hotel was all about expectations. We went into the trip hoping for a quiet, peaceful place to relax for a week. It wasn't important to us that the hotel provide shampoo, conditioner, beach towels or some of the other amenities you can expect at a Beaches or a Sandals. With that expectation point in mind, this hotel was fantastic! We stayed in one of the pillar houses out on the cliffs and heard a number of people trying to upgrade to a pillar house while we were there (there are only 4 so don't expect them to be sitting idle when you get there). With a large deck facing sunset and hammocks both on the deck (1 person) and below it (2 person), it was a struggle to justify leaving the room. When we did, however, the cliffs were amazing and the scuba diving was even better. I had heard that the diving/snorkeling in Jamaica was only "OK", but that is just wrong. The reefs themselves are very pretty and the fish life is some of the best I've seen. Even right off the cliffs of the hotel, there were schools of fish and vibrant plant life. Visibility has to be 60+ feet.Thankfully, we didn't get the all-inclusive plan at the hotel. It seems like it is much more expensive than paying as you go. We had breakfast and lunch at the hotel almost every day and freely ordered drinks while on the cliffs, by the pool or even to take back to the room. The total for the week was about half of what the all inclusive plan would have cost for just one person. Unless you're a heavy drinker or a HUGE eater, the all-inclusive just doesn't make sense. Especially with all of the fun small restaurants in and around Negril, which most people will want to try, thereby throwing away the already paid for all-inclusive dinner. Now for the details. The room was spotless when we showed up. It was kept up excellently all week. the maid service was terrific. The front desk is a bit hit or miss. [...] is wonderful and possibly the most friendly person we met in Jamaica. Some of the others made it feel awkward to ask for cabs or information about restaurants. Almost like they were there to check people in, but not to help you navigate Negril (which may have been true, but is a pretty crummy attitude if it was). During the week, we found a number of other members of the staff who were always willing to help out and were extremely friendly. [...] (at the dive shop) just to name a few. Much of the staff in the restaurant is downright surly. You'll get your food, but leave expectations for a welcoming smile in your room. All in, I would recommend Samsara if you're just looking for a beautiful, well-kept place to relax and are fairly comfortable carving your own path during your vacation. If you need hand-holding, this may not be the place for you.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

Don't. There is a market in downtown Negril. It has the same stuff that is sold on the beach. The Negril area seems to suffer from a lack of quality goods to purchase. There were plenty of Red Stripe hats and T-Shirts and Bob Marley was everywhere, but a nice piece of artwork was not be found in the markets.

January vacation in Negril

We sampled the food on the first night and the following breakfast and decided to frequent the surrounding restaurants for the rest of our stay. There are many within walking distance and most are better than Samsara's main dining room. The advertised WIFI is only available at the restaurant across the street from the ocean side units. The atmosphere is somewhat laid back as compared to the beach locations. Take advantage of the free shuttle to the sister resort on the beach so you can get the feel of sand between your toes. It would have been better if the "hot" tub was actually hot.

Cheap & Worth It

The hotel is older than it looks in the pictures, but the weather was so nice in Jamaica that we did not spend much time inside. The staff was friendly and nice. We decided to do the all-inclusive option and found that we got our money's worth out of the free drinks alone! The food was not very great, but there is a great Jerk Chicken place about a block up the road. Samasara's cliff location provided a beautiful backdrop and AMAZING snorkeling (as long as the water was calm enough).
