The origins of the palazzo that hosts the Hotel Scandinavia go back deep in time. The building dates from the year 1000 and it is said that this is the very place where Desdemona met Othello, the "Moor of Venice." The palazzo was renovated in the 16th century by the Trevisan family, a wealthy merchant dynasty, that lived in it for generations. In the Fifties, the Tinacci family transformed the palazzo into the Hotel Scandinavia, managing to preserve the atmosphere of an ancient Venetian residence handed down through the centuries. The is one of the Venetian Hotels that most reflects the spirit of an aristocratic Venetian residence. The Hotel windows provide a stupendous view: to the building's left is the Church of Santa Maria Formosa, whose name is linked to an ancient legend. It is said that this "Campo" was the site of the apparition of a rather prosperous-looking Madonna and, to celebrate this miracle, a church was built in 1492 that was given the name of Santa Maria Formosa (the Buxom). The Hotel occupies one of the best locations in Venice: Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge are only a few minutes away on foot; from the nearby vaporetto landings you can reach the train station, Piazzale Rome and all the places of artistic interest. The hotel offers concierge, internet access-wireless, non smoking rooms, pets allowed, reception and safe deposit box.Breakfast is included.

A tax has been imposed by the city for stays beginning 1 October 2012, and will be collected directly at the property. The tax ranges from EUR 1 to EUR 5 per person, per night. The amount has been determined by the local administration, depends on the star rating of hotel and the season of travel. This tax does not apply from the 6th consecutive night of stay onwards, to residents of Venice City and children under 10 years of age. Please note that further exemptions may apply. For additional details on this tax please check with the hotel property at check-in.

Venice Gem

Despite Venice being a very easy place to get lost in, we had no problem finding Hotel Scandinavia. It was a 10 minute walk from where we got off the boat. The guy (don't know of he's the manager/owner or what) was very cheerful & very helpful, told us how to access free wi-fi, gave us a free map of Venice & drew us suggested walks. We were in room no 4 on the 2nd floor, the aircon was on which was great and the room was clean & decorated in old world Venetian style complete with Venetian chandelier. The bathroom was a bit in the old side but clean & had lots of towels & toiletries. It had a double & 2 singles for our family of 4. No view but we didn't intend looking out the window much, we just wanted to get out there! There was also a small fridge by the way handy for cold drinks. The view of the square outside from the landing is lovely. Breakfast the next morning consisted if cereal, juice, yoghurt, cheese, bread rolls, croissants, tea/coffee and tinned fruit (peaches & grapefruit I think). We would not hesitate to stay here again or to recommend it, it was great value, very friendly & above all a great location. It's so central, 10 mins walk to st marks square.

Good value, great location

The hotel Scandanavia is in quiet lovely square just moments away from the hustle & bustle right between the Rialto and San Marco. The staff are friendly and helpful. The room very clean and comfortable with great modern bathroom. Only downside lots of stairs and no lift! Though they carry your bags up for you. We loved Venice!

Decent for the price

The hotel was dreadfully difficult to find as the directions given on the website weren't helpful. The complimentary breakfast and helpful staff were two definite benefits. Otherwise, it was an ok hotel for the price. There is no elevator, which made bringing our luggage down from the 6th floor quite unpleasant. The free wifi was generous but only worked sporadically and only if you sat on certain floors.
