Mecenate Hotel in Rome

Hotel itself was nice but we did not stay in main building.Instead they gave us the room a few doors away from the hotel inside the small apartment building, partially converted to hotel. There was no elevator in that building, room was dark with no TV. There was a few news and strange music radio stations(in Italian)with bad reception. At night room was very warm and A/C was not available.

very nice staff

It's near Ternini so great to get around. Area is good though a little grungy looking in "China town " to the east. Breakfast included in the room was great. The atmosphere is a charming modernization of a 19th century palazo. Excellent staff.

Excellent in every way

On arrival I was told by the very friendly receptionist that we had been allocated apartment rooms, but he would check as there had been some cancellations. We were upgraded to deluxe rooms on the 5th floor with a view of Santa Maria Maggiore. Rooms were very well furnished, good size, clean and the view was as promised, quite stunning. Location is good. You could walk to most places but we used the metro due to the cold and snow.Termini is a short walk or Victorio Emanuele even shorter and straight forward. Breakfast was excellent. No hot food, but I don't expect that in Italy. Bread was fresh and good quality, also salamis, ham, cheese, cakes, pastries etc... Selection was different on each of the two days, which would be a definite plus if staying longer. All the staff were friendly and helpful and those that needed to spoke good English. Only negative was we had to pay (5 Euros per 24 hours) for wi-fi but I'm still surprised we got this good an hotel for the price we paid (even without the room upgrade) so I'm not complaining!

Try Trattoria Vecchia Roma. It's had mixed reviews elsewhere, but we had a good (late) lunch there for a reasonable price.

very nice stay

Very nice place to stay in Rome. old but nice hotel. the staff was very helpful. the breakfast buffet was excellent! there aren't many amenities but who is going to stay in the hotel much while in Rome? the beds were small but pretty comfy. it would be nice if the hotel had more info for travelers. info about how the local buses/schedules would be very helpful. we also found a great grocery store on the corner of the street on the same side as the hotel entrance closer to the church. it is in the basement of the building on the corner. we didn't find it until the day before we left. info like that would be helpful to get from the hotel. overall a great stay and close enough to walk to everything.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

find a bus schedule in a souvenir shop. this will help you figure out how to get around Rome. Avoid the Blue open top bus. instead of 2 hrs tour, it ends up being much longer because they stop for 10 minutes at most of the 12 stops and smoke, chat or get coffee. this is the tour offered by Orbi tz.

Staff terrible,

You can see the coliseum from the rooftop garden at this hotel. However, the staff was less than welcoming, even somewhat annoyed at any small request. Room was small which is standard for Europe.

There are many "Italian" restaurants in the area. Most of them are not run by locals or Italians. Many non Italians running "Italian" restaurants

Make sure you bring conditioner. The room has evereything else you need, very comfortable, exellent location - only blocks away from the subway which is easy to navigate. Within walking distance to a lot of the major sites - if not take the subway. The staff was very helpful and friendly. They helped out getting a taxi to and from the airport and gave us a map of the city. The free breakfast buffet was also worth it. I don't know about the other hotels but if you pick this one I don't think you will be disappointed.

Very short walk to several restorante which were worth the money, not 5 star but very friendly and tasteful. You can also walk to the subway (Termini) and go elsewhere if you prefer

Clean, small. Lack of warmth.

The hotel was close enough to most things, particularly the coliseum. The rooms were small which is expected of European hotels. The washroom was inefficient. There was no shower curtain and only a partial glass wall which meant that you should have your toilet covered as you will inadvertently spray it while you shower. There were no ironing board nor iron which meant we had to wear wrinkle clothes. The front desk staff were professional, but curt. There was no warmth from them. They did their duties and that was that. The nighttime staff were even less cheerful and did not seem to want to help us. Breakfast was buffet which was pretty decent.

Exceptional Experience ! !

The staff at the Mecenate went above and beyond the call to accomodate us and make our stay easy and enjoyable. The rooms were immaculate and the accomodations plush. Our view was absolutely gorgeous! The only issues we had were that they charged for WIFI and the breakfast buffet was never varied. All in all we would return to the Mecenate and recommend all our friends to stay there.

My wife and I are basically 50 year old couch potatoes and everything was basically within walking distance. The subway station was 2 blocks away, but an entrance was down the block, for trips to the Vatician or Travi Fountain.

The Hop On Hop Off bus is a great thing to do your first day. It's a great way to see the popular attractions and to learn your way around the city. If you go on the Imperial Rome tour, make sure your guide is not Georgio!
