Fantastic Location, Exceptional Service
The Hoffs & Marolewski's Dec 5, 2009
We stayed at the Mecenate Palace for 2 days prior to an eastern mediterranean cruise and 2 days following the cruise. This ... hotel has a fantastic location. It was very close to the termini station and only 2 blocks from the Metro Station. I don't recommend taking the train from the airport or to the port only because it is very difficult with luggage. The Hotel arranged a taxi for 5 people with a ton of luggage to the airport and we found a taxi from the port for all 5 of us and all or our luggage also. Trust me, this was a whole lot easier than taking the train. We were able to walk to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum and the Colloseum from the hotel. It is quite a day of walking, but it was a wonderful way to see a lot of Rome. We toured the Santa Maria Maggiore Church when we came back from the cruise and you musn't miss this. It is truley spectacular inside. The staff at the hotel are very helpful. They led us directly to the Metro to take to Vatican City and that was a very reasonable way to get all the way there. The roof top terrace of the hotel gives you beautiful views of Rome. You can see the Colloseum, as well as St. Peter's Basilica from here. The rooms are very clean, and breakfast was wonderful every morning on the roof top terrace. I highly recommend the restaurant Le 2 Collone that sits to the left of the Santa Maria Maggiore. The food is wonderful, (we even felt the pizza was better here than in naples), the people are very friendly and the house wine is delicious. Again, I highly recommend this restaurant, in fact with all of the options in Rome to eat we ended up at this restarant every night we stayed in Rome.

This was our first visit to Rome so we had NO idea where to begin finding a good hotel. Our pastor and wife enjoyed their ... stay at the Mecenate in early summer (except NO air yet) so we decided to book it. The location was within walking distance to many nice restaurants and a bus tour company. We felt very safe walking around at any time - it was not on a main street so was very quiet. The staff is very helpful for those who are tourists who do not speak the language.

Hotel is well located to many of Rome's attractions. Whilst we utilised an organised tour on the 1st day to see the ... ruins/pantheon/coloseum etc, they could easily be walked to for those who dont mind spending several hours walking the streets. Our stay was very good overall but started badly when we arrived to check-in, the hotel had our booking commencing from the next day and were full for the night...not happy after a 10 hr flight and 40 minute taxi! Was eventually sorted but still kicked off on the wrong foot.

Spacious, clean room, very attentive staff. Our room was in the new area which was under construction, a little noisy in the ... day time, but we were out sight seeing most of the time. Hotel is a 5 to 10 minute walk to Termini train station which we used for the Metro and to get to the airport.

We stayed at this hotel based on on-line recommendations and were not disappointed, other than we could not open our windows ... due to construction scaffolding outside. Everything else was 5 star! We stayed in the newer part of the hotel which was next door and were pleasantly surprised with much bigger rooms and a heated towel rack in the bathroom! Location was great to the Colloseum, Forums, Trevi and a ton of great places to eat. Would have no problem booking this hotel again and actually booked my father to stay there in November.

Rob Oct 3, 2009
We were in Rome for 3 days before a cruise, and walked everywhere from here. It was just 1 1/2 blocks from the Gray Line & ... Hop-On-Hop-Off bus offices for boarding. Also, 3 blocks from the Termini train station, which we walked to as we took the train to the Civitavecchia port. Very pleasant breakfast room on the roof (included). Good sidewalk cafe next door. Lovely room with nice marble bathroom.

Upon arrival we were told that the prepaid reservation we had made with Orbitz was cancelled, but they had no idea why. They ... said they had no other rooms available and that they would put us up in another "comparable" hotel. We had friends staying at the Mecenate and also had the car service to take us to the Port for a cruise scheduled to pick us up there. I demanded an explanation but all they would say is that they would put us up elsewhere. Apparently, this is a trick some hotels in Italy use when they can get more for a room than what you paid. There was no Manager available because he was on vacation so basically we were helpless. They called a cab to take us to the other hotel and when we checked in it was not comparable. I called back the Mecenate and DEMANDED a room. I also asked how people who came after us were allowed to check in and the Assistant Manager said " Well you cant expect me to give you a room meant for someone else?" That's what they did to me! So I raised my voice and told him that I would call the Police. Upon my refusal to stay at the other hotel I was told that there may be a way he could fit us in and to get into a cab and come back. When I returned to the Mecenate I was given a story about moving a family from two rooms to one to make room for us ... total lies. Unless you want your vacation ruined ... Do not stay at this hotel.

This was a great hotel. The breakfast in the morning on the roof was the best. Happy hour in the evening was good. The staff ... was always there to help me. This hotel has a very good location, helpful staff and a great terrace with a good view. Ample breakfast, good A/C, nice ... water pressure and showers but you must request a deluxe room in the original hotel. They have an annex where the room they offered us was much smaller with no view. I felt the upgrade was worth the extra 40¬ per night. They were very helpful in getting us oriented and settled at the front desk. Plenty of good restaurants nearby, including one of the top in Rome, Agata and Romeo's on the same block.

The Rome subway red line is a short (3min) walk away. You can quickly get to many of the most interesting Roman attractions by taking the subway followed by a short walk. Don't bother with the HOP On HOP Off bus tours, they get stuck in traffic and waste your precious time in Rome, don't run as late and cost more.

We arrived on day 18 of our travels through Italy, Poland and Germany. Loved having an elevator, air conditioning, ... comfortable bed and cleanliness. Would have gladly given up some of the cavernous bathroom space for more bedroom area. Staff was helpful and spoke English. The location was great - we walked, traveled on the Metro and the train to various sites. Cafes and restaurants nearby. The roof garden was beautiful for breakfast, an afternoon respite or dinner at sunset. Would stay there again.

Great location near central train station and right on Santa Maria Maggiore piazza. Charming lobby bar with afternoon tea ... and full restaurant on roof with outside bar overlooking the piazza and all of Rome. All staff was helpful and friendly. Taxi stand on one side of the piazza church and most local tour companies located on the other side. There are more expensive and more elegant places to stay in Rome, but the amenities, comfort, quality and service here is excellent. And, the price was reasonable. We would definitely stay there again.

Schedule a local tour to see the Vatican museums and St. Peter's Basilica. You're given a receiver with ear pieces and the guide speaks to the group via a microphone linked to the ear pieces. They take you in a side door and explain everything as you go through. When you see the incredibly long line of people waiting to get tickets to go inside, you'll be glad you slipped in the back door with your small group of 20 or so. Most of these tours pick up at the hotel and the Mecenate Palace is about a block away from the gathering point.

The room was nicely and comfortably furnished with adequate a/c (not always avail. in Europe).... The roof restaurant was a ... nice setting with mediocre food and service. Upon our arrival we were offered coffee and a sandwich at the bar (cost @ $70). The sandwich was shockingly bad on plain white bread not particularly fresh and with virtually no condiments. Hard to imagine Italians making such a mess of a simple sandwich at an extravagant cost. On balance, I could not recommend this hotel.
