First time abroad
Convenient location, but expensive for what you get.
I picked this hotel because it was so close to Rome Termini. That way, I wouldn't have to carry my luggage very far or get a cab. If it means anything, I was in Rome for only one day, towards the end of a business trip. Walking into the hotel, it feels like a hole in the wall type of place. The "lobby" doesn't have enough room to hold a family of four and their luggage at the same time. Additionally, there's no elevator, so getting luggage up the stairs is also a problem. The first thing I noticed was that the room was very dark, with a grey wallpaper and windows that don't let in enough light to adequately light the room. The room itself was quite large, about 1.5-2 times larger than the room in the 4-star hotel I stayed at in Pisa during the trip. The bathroom however, felt very cramped, the shower was oriented in such a way that the two sliding doors on it close to meet at a right angle - resulting in a slight gap that allows water to leak out onto the floor. To make matters worse, the drain was clogged, so the shower tended to overflow on its own. Only two bars of soap were provided, no shampoo or any other essentials. I don't know if any other cities do this, but in Rome, when leaving the hotel, the person at the desk requires guests to leave their key while they're out. When returning to the hotel however, the person at the desk doesn't check ID, so in theory anyone can walk in, look at the keys on the rack and say they're staying in one of those rooms and get access. I paid about 100 euros for a night at this place, and I also booked another hotel for an associate near the Trevi Fountain for the same price. He got the better deal in my opinion.

Sent to a Different Hotel
Although we'd booked a room at Hotel Mamiani, we walked there and were told our room was "broken" and that we'd be staying at the Hotel Mariano. While that hotel wasn't far from Hotel Mamiani, it was late, we were tired, and we would have liked advance notice of the change. Hotel Mariano was a good place to stay. It's location near the Roma Termini station was very convenient. The room was clean and larger than most European hotel rooms.

Great Location..eh hotel
Stayed in Rome for 4 nights. Dingy area for a white suburban girl, but normal for me as I'm familiar with the culture and speak italian. It's a very extracommunitari (illegal aliens) area but in a way it was nice because it had cheap internet cafe's and phone service as they all had to phone home like E.T. The train station is super close with cheap 4 euro buses to the airport. The metro stop Vittorio Emmanuele was there, but Rome is very walkable. I walked all the way to the vatican on foot, it's quite pleasant. Have to warn you it takes about 45 min to an hour to do that, but you're seeing/doing/eating so much along the way. Rooms are tiny, but that's Rome for you. Our maid did a good job cleaning. Shampoo and body wash is mixed in individual containers like ketchup. No conditioner and no body wash, so there will be some dryness going on. Wifi was pretty bad. One guy will tell you the wrong password, just ask another one. Bed is pretty uncomfortable, you're sleeping on springs with little padding. TV didn't work. Also you have to keep it down. You have to realize this is an apt building turned hotel so you can be heard quite easily. All in all pretty bad if you're traveling with a female which I was, but for a group of guys not a bad place. However, my wife and I spent the ENTIRE time on the streets of Rome so we didn't mind it as much but for hotel lovers it's not the place for you. Unfortunately, Rome is a tough city when it comes to cheap and good hotels. We stayed at a 4 star in downtown Madrid for way cheaper than what we paid in Rome. It's just the way it is. However, you should spend most of your time out seeing the city as it's gorgeous.

For inexpensive Italy, it was great
Staff were great. Rooms clean and small. Nice location a few blocks from train station. After dark you would want to be alert in this neighborhood, we instructed our teenage kids to walk with purpose and there were no problems. Free continential breakfast in room, you check what you want from list of rolls, cheese, etc. the night before. The price was geat, we would stay here again.
