Beautiful Hotel Columbus in Rome
Al Dec 18, 2009
Hotel Columbus in Rome is extremely charming. A European buffet breakfast was served in a vast ballroom with huge paintings. ... The dining room with its arches and frescoes is beautiful...so is the courtyard! The staff was extremely nice and helpful...changed our worthless American dollars for Euros at a much better rate than the banks and airport. To find the cafes, you need to investigate the narrow alleys across the main street. We walked everywhere from our hotel, which is right by St. Patricks and the Vatican.

You can see St Peter's Basilica from your room. Excellent walking location to most sights; Trevi Fountain, Navorra Plaza, ... Pantheon etc. On bus routes to all major areas. I have stayed in Rome 2ce before and without a doubt this was the best hotel for location, price and service. The desk staff could not do enough for us. One even drove us to the car rental to pick up our car after his shift was done. Rooms are small but all are in Rome. Charming former palace with fabulous antiques and great breakfast included in price of room. It is the only hotel I will stay at in Rome for future trips. Even had parking!

Nice hotel, but need to update check-in
Tired traveler Oct 27, 2009
Overall the hotel was very nice. I am very skiddish about hotels and cleanliness and I had no issues with Hotel Columbus as ... far as that is concerned. The hotel is perfect if you want an "old world" experience, not for someone looking to stay in a very modern hotel. Only a stones throw from the Vatican and an ATM. There is also a bus stop directly across the street for bus tours of famous sites in the city. The only issue I had was that when I booked the hotel the check-in on the computer was noon. When my husband and I arrived, we were (what we thought was) only about 20 minutes early but then we were told we couldn't check in till 1pm. We had been up for 24 hours (we traveled from Buffalo, NY) and had to walk around the city for over an hour, completely exausted, hungry and desperately needing showers. They did take our luggage and store it but we had our carry-ons because of the money and passports.

This hotel in located in a beautiful several hundred year old building and suppposedly built by one of the popes. It is ... located very close to the Vatican and on the main street leading to the Vatican. The provided breakfast was very good and the room was large with old but adequate furnishings. My only criticism is that the lighting in the bathroom was poor. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Hotel Columbus

We were in Rome for the canonization of 5 saints. Obviously, the location does not get much better for proximity to St. ... Peter's. We read other reviews of the hotel with respect to insufficient lighting and some other minor issues, but loved the idea of its location so we ignored the issues. Here are some things we liked about the Columbus and some of the things we did not like in no particular order: (1) Room lighting is a real issue; (2) proximity to St. Peter's and the Vatican is excellent; (3) Staff is only okay -- sometimes helpful and friendly and sometimes not helpful and not friendly; (4) European continental breakfast is pretty good, but the coffee tastes grainy -- neither good by American standards nor good by European standards; (5) Why do Europeans want to charge for wireless -- it's a nuisance and seems sort of cheap by American "free wireless" standards; (6) Rooms were quiet and quaint but bed was only okay; (7) hallways, stairways, common areas of the hotel were pretty and unique, but there were some pieces of furniture in the hallways with holes in the apholstery; (8) most of the staff speak excellent English; (9) shower stall is small but water pressure is good; (10)elevator is real small and slow -- consider using the stairs (a lot) -- this was okay because the stairway was wide and pretty; (11) rooms were very clean and functional except for the lighting at night; and (12) check and check out was fast and painless. My wife disagrees with me about the staff. I thought they were okay and she thought they could have been a lot more friendlier.

Best hotel close to St. Peter's!
Mitos Oct 13, 2009
We have always stayed in another hotel in our past visits to the Vatican, also just a few steps from St. Peters's; and in ... another hotel several years ago, also close to St. Peter's. We are definitely going to be staying at Columbus Hotel in future visits to the Vatican. During our stay, however, the wi-fi in our room did NOT work at all. Another guest told us that he had been in the hotel for several weeks and the wi-fi worked perfectly until just a few days before our stay. Would have been nice to have computer access in our room. Also, would be great to have some FRESH FRUITS as part of the breakfast, some eggs and bacon/sausage!

Tim Oct 11, 2009
Very nice place. They do try very hard to make your stay nice. Front desk people are top notch. The room is not that well ... lit and kind of bare bones, but for Rome at this price point, it is very nice. Location is astounding, if you're looking to focus your visit on the Vatican. The breakfast in the morning is a nice touch. It allowed us to save a great deal of money on food. If you are expecting this to be the equivalent of a 4-star American hotel, you will be disappointed. If you understand what Rome is all about and have an adventuresome attitude, you'll love this place. It's not the epitome of luxury, but it's by no means a dump either. I would definitely stay here again.

Walk around the Vatican wall toward Musei Vaticani, across the street you will find a restaurant called Hostaria Dei Bastioni. The food is wonderful, prices are reasonable, the people are some of the nicest I ever met in Rome. Service is great and speedy. They do their best to speak English. We went there 4 out of our 7 nights and loved every minute. Only downside is they don't offer pizza...pasta though is fantastic.

Our adult family trip concentrated around visiting the Vatican and all the historical sites within walking distance of that ... area. In addition, we wanted to sample a week of living Italian style. Two of us had been to Europe before but not Italy. One of us had never been overseas. This was a great trip. The weather was perfect, the hotel was very close to the Vatican and we were ablte to walk to all the historical sites we wanted to visit. The staff at the hotel was great. The carpet in our room needed a good cleaning but other than that it was a European hotel. I think most Americans are surprised when they stay at a European hotel. They expect their hotels to compare with ours and that doesn't normally happen. Again, Hotel Columbus is very convenient and full of history itself.

Love2Soar Sep 1, 2009
Hotel Columbus is located 50m or around 150 feet from St. Peters square. That's the center for me. I always try to avoid ... places close to the Spanish Steps etc, because they can be very loud. We got a room on the fourth floor facing the court yard (quiet) and were able to see St. Peters from our room. Location, location, location to an affordable price. It was more affordable because I booked it with a flight from Germany to Rome. The staff was excellent. Very, very professional, very helpful. The hotel has internet access for 2.50 Euros for one hour. You get a code and can use it anytime. Make sure you log out every time. They are Macs and its all in Italian. I didn't have trouble getting into the internet through Firefox. However, I took a USB passport with me to download all my pictures from my camera. We and the hotel staff could not figure out how to transfer the pictures either from the camera to the desktop or to the USB passport. Very frustrating. We tried to go to internet cafes; every single computer in all the internet cafes had a virus that inhibited downloading pictures. Maybe they fixed them by the time you will go!! (Just a little inside detail). You may want to bring your laptop and leave it at the front desk when you leave the hotel. The hotel is has huge stairways. The elevator is tiny and very very slow. But its great excercise walking up and down. The rooms are on the smaller side, but very cozy. Compared to American hotels with wallpaper and pictures this one is very simple, but in an elegant contemporary way. Just typical Roman. The floors a tiled, the walls are painted in a yellow-beige color with a hint of Florence painting technique. Bed is comfortable and the room has air conditioning. A buffet breakfast is included, but otherwise the dinner is very expensive. Did I mentions the room are very clean. Not one spot anywhere. Also, the room has a safe. I recommend to use it for everything all the time. Regarding using debit card to withdraw money. Always, always use your credit card if possible. I withdrew twice 200 Euros in Rome and the second time, my checking account was emptied. Now I am going through the process of denying these charges. Amway, 10 days before coming back to the US I ran out of cash. My local US bank didn't do anything about it and just said sorry for the inconvenience. This has never happened. Always have a few hundred dollars in cash. I hate to exchange cash, but just keep the money for an emergency like mine. Even if you withdraw cash from the debit card, the fees and exchange rates are more expensive compared to the credit card.

Most of the time we went to pizzerias as they are cheaper than restaurants. Hotel Columbus is located on Via della Conciliazione. When you step outside the Hotel cross this street and walk straight on to Via dell'Erba which turns into Vicolo d'Orteo. Three blocks north of the hotel are a few family-owned Pizzerias. But you can find other affordable ones on Borgo Pio and Borgo Vittorio. They often offer a 10 Euro deal, including a meal, a glass of wine, and dessert.
